Portsmouth Invite Recap for Collins and Perkins

Recommended Posts

The Portsmouth Invitational consists of 8 eight man teams of college players who either have used up their eligibility or are seniors.  The young one and done's aren't invited.  So while it is a solid field of players, it is not elite.  Yes, players from the PIT do get drafted.  Back in 2017, 6 who participated in the PIT were drafted (most second rounders).  In 2018 two were drafted and in 2022 one was drafted.

I did not watch any of the games, and I am only recapping the stats for our two players, Collins and Perkins.  You can draw your own conclusion as you desire.  Both played in all 3 games.  Starters were rotated, and most all players on each team played pretty much equal minutes.

Collins, 25 min per game, 2.7 ppg on 19% shooting (3 of 16), 0% from the arc (0 of 5), 1.3 rebounds per game, 6.7 assists per game, 2.7 turnovers per game and 1.7 steals per game.

Perkins, 23.3 mpg, 6.7 ppg on 53% shooting (8 of 15) 43% from the arc (3 of 7), 1.7 rebounds per game, 0.3 assists per game, no turnovers, and 0.3 steals per game.

Dayton's Camara made the 13 member all tourney team averaging 20 ppg and 11 rpg, but hit only 3 of 18 from the arc.

There is a G-League Elite Combine in Chicago May 13-14, and then the NBA has a Combine in Chicago May 16-18.  Withdrawal from the NBA draft deadline is May 31.   Players who have remaining college eligibility can request a waiver from the NCAA and return to college, but in the past they have had to sit out the first 3 games of the next season.  This pathway would be available to Collins, but he earlier indicated he is gone.  After the combine, players can be called into group or individual workouts by each NBA team.

Disclaimer as I didn’t watch games either…but that is a ROUGH stat line for Yuri.  The percentages for Perk look good, however.

The 3 point line was the NBA distance so Yuri who struggled from the college distance was undoutbaly going to struggle. Neither Yuri or Javonte were aggressive (selfish) enough to put more shots up. Every time Camara got the ball, he didn't pass, hence the good stat lines for him.

If you compare Tyger's stats or the Liberty PG stats or any other guard, they got assists and shots up. Yuri just never looks for his own shot which is nothing new for us Billiken fans.
