It isn’t difficult to see the pattern that higher profile, and/or more proven head coaches receive more compensation at these schools. And with some schools they have a standard in which they will pay many of their head coaches. Xavier for example paid Chris Mack over $2 million before he left, but Steele started out lower. Jay Wright and Ed Cooley salaries are obvious for their success and longevity. Georgetown and Marquette will pay for coaches. Smart, Wojo, Ewing $3 Million. St. John’s isn’t going to hire Rick Pitino with Mike Anderson money. Sean Miller is making more than Travis Steele money. Thad Matta is making more than LaVall Jordan money. Greg McDermott signed a new deal last year. On the other side, Danny Hurley’s deal increases value over time. Kyle Neptune isn’t making $6 million. The above list even says 2020 on it. It’s now 2023. And assistant coach compensation has a lot of value too, very important, but that doesn’t seem to get level of buzz or discussion. And basketball budgets take into consideration many other things too. This is from 2022: https://www.three-man-weave.com/3mw/college-basketball-budgets-2022 2022 SLU had expenses of $7.6 million for the men's basketball program in fiscal year 2021. SLU spent slightly more than DePaul. It was around a million less than Butler. The average expense for a program in the Big East was $13.4 million, paced by UConn at $24 million. UConn spent $5+ more than any other Big East team. The data is all available here. https://ope.ed.gov/athletics/#/
brianstl
UConn's basketball spending is crazy. Seven Big East schools spent at least $10 million less than them. UConn spent more than Marquette and Seton Hall combined.
brianstl
Duke was the only school in the country to spend more on men's basketball than UConn. UConn spent $7 million more than Kansas did.

The overall point I was making before, and, is to be made now, is that SLU spends well for an A10 school. (That’s not a knock on SLU) But some would be surprised at what some of these other basketball leagues are spending. But SLU isn’t in those leagues. If they were the revenue would be higher and the expense expectation would be higher obviously. As mentioned, the Big East had hopes of doubling its $40 million tv deal deal next go round. We’ll see. I think UD is about $8.6 million and VCU is about $7.1 million or something like that. SLU $7.6 million. That’s good enough for top tier A10, and bottom tier Big East.
