Popular Post HoosierPal
January 23 show with Ackerman and Tate tonight. (Ford out recruiting.) Today is Larry Legend's birthday, 44 years old. Ford changed the game plan against GW without Collins. Got the offense started earlier than normal with Collins to take the pressure off of Hughes Jr. Perkins ACL injury, the recovery time - basketball wise - is 1 1/2 years. He had a lot on his mind when he started recovery, including the $$ that was staring at him on the table. He had major surgery. He still is progressing. He has never complained, never negative when he had reasons to be negative. Parker always happy, always smiling. Tate was talking with Parker's JUCO coach, and the coach mentioned Thatch has been a very good influence on Parker. Tate: we have been fortunate to keep Coach and the pillars of TeamBlue this year. Thatch has been instrumental in TeamBlue. Thatch: "No, no that's not the way we do things here at TeamBlue." Hargrove came in same class with Yuri. He does things you can't coach. Brings the energy. You can't take you eyes off TJ. He will do something spectacular. From where he started to where he is now, wow. He continued to work every season on his game. Bench is deep, you can plug in different pieces. Tate: "Some games you can't keep all players happy with minutes. We try to win games, winning takes care of everything." Coach Ford's teams usually get better in Jan and Feb. "All 7 teams since I have been here have gotten better Jan and Feb" Players start playing for the cause, rather than playing for themself." Don't worry about your stats. It's a team game. Ford is a big believer in film. "You are gonna know your opponent, their in-laws, and everything about the team before you play them. After the game, the staff re-watchs the game." To work for Ford, you have to have a passion for the game. It can't be just a job if you work for Ford. How did Tate and Ford hook up? Ford used to recruit his players at JUCO, so he knew Tate there. When he got to SLU, like he offered Tate first. During year 1, Ford met with Tate and asked if he was going to stick around. "Me and you, we can put this team on the map. You with me?" Collins: he hasn't plateaued yet. He has a lot of growing yet to do. When he gets his next opportunity (pro) that's when his genius will come out. He won't have to think for everyone. Tate coached Collins coach, Brian Turner, in JUCO. So he knew the Head Coach for St. Mary's. Tate invited the team, and Collins was there as a freshman. Tate told Collins he wanted him to run this program some day. Collins said 'yes I can'. Tate told Ford, that's your future point guard. He leads the players to positive results. TO's, you can't be successful if you don't try. Other teams realize he is a good defender. Jimerson: He is now guarding. His offense has been there. He wanted to guard Bishop in the GW game. Tate told Ford, yes we want Gibson on Bishop. Tate: when I took this job, I wanted to keep the kids from St. Louis at home. It means something to me, being from St. Louis, to keep them here. Tatum and Beal are both still embedded into this community. They both are still the same guys Tate coached as youths. Jordan Goodwin: What a ride he has been on. He bleeds St. Louis Blue. Everything he is getting, he has worked for. He never doubted himself, when most others did. Davidson, always coached well. We are going to their home, we have to be ready. Season...KenPom rating going into 1st game in January...going into March...Final KenPom rating (lowest KenPom rating & date, lowest in conference play if different) 2016-17...312...289...273 (319 on 1/14) 2017-18...184...138...148 (208 on 12/12, 184 on 1/17) 2018-19...83...136...103 (145 on 2/23) 2019-20...91...83...62 (142 on 11/5, 94 on 2/8) 2020-21...35...51...53 (54 on 2/6) 2021-22..77...62...68 (106 on 11/9, 81 on 1/15) I'd say things were looking pretty good this narrative up until 2020-21 - obviously COVID played a role there. Ironically the 2018-19 team struggled a lot in January & early February, but then as we know got hot in March. HoosierPal likes this

Obviously COVID issues played a role there, but last season the team peaked earlier & then largely plateaued. Not to spoil the work you did here, but Tate's claim was that each team got better in January AND February. You'd have to compare December 31st rankings to end of year rankings. I imagine there'd be even more disparity.

Popular Post HoosierPal
February 6 Ford and Earl Austin Jr. Earl: what's the mood of the team after the two L's. CF: After getting off to a great conference start, we go to Fordham, and I've never had seen an environment like that night at Rose Hill. We played terrific for 30 minutes, felt good about the game, then all of a sudden we miss a layup which would have put us up 10, they come down and hit and And-1, and now it is a 5 point game. They got physical, the crowd got into it, and you know the result. The layup we missed was huge. In the first half, Yuri got his second foul at the 7 or 8 minute mark, and that wasn't a good scenario. But we went into half up 4, and thought we were in good shape. We opened the door for them in the second half. We could have increased the margin, but it was our mistakes that let them back in. A mismatch at the four caused us problems. Okoro played like last season in the game. He was tough to stop. He kept us in the game in every way. But some of it was how they were playing us, they were leaving Okoro open, using their 5 to trap Yuri. We just need some consistency night in and night out from Okoro. Fordham took us off the dribble, getting the And-1's. Everyone knows everyone's offense, it is the third and fourth options that need to work. Earl: What does it mean to the league for Fordham to be a factor? CF: Good for the league, but shoot, I'd rather they didn't hurt us. They played with a chip on their shoulder. Their 4 was the key. They put together the right schedule early, winning a bunch of games, getting confidence. CF: we opened the A10 schedule on the road, St Joe was packed. Davidson was sold out. Loyola was a good environment. Everyone knows we are a favorite. VCU: Great environment, team knows they let the crowd down. Okoro's first foul was just careless. VCU had one guy gets hot, a lot of cross matchups, and we rushed some things offensively. We took some shots that some guys can make some time, but we forced shots. We weren't making VCU guard us long enough. Jimerson played really well against VCU. In the 6 game winning streak, he played the best he ever has. A couple NBA scouts commented on him, particularly on his defense and passing. He has become a complete player on offense and defense. In the GW game, Jimerson did an amazing job on Bishop. He was actually on him for most of the game. We need other guys to do this. We have had a lot of issues where we were playing individual defense. "I got my guy." You have to have team basketball. There are rotations that go into it, there are stunts and jabs that go in it, hedges that go into it. We weren't getting that. When we are at our best, we get all of that. It has to be five guys playing as one. Someone will get beat in half court. There will be a ball screen in every possession. Any time you screen, there are at least two people involved. There has to be rotation, team defense. Okoro, Forrester and Hargrove have improved our rim protection. Earlier in this season rim protection was 'non-existent'. "Hasahn isn't here anymore." We still aren't turning anyone over like we need to. We didn't see this in preseason, and it is now adding up. But turning over our opponent is not this team. It isn't going to change. This team is also CF's low on deflections. We do need the defense to help out the offense with steals and deflections. If you aren't turning opponents over, you better be a great positional defensive team. You need to be in the right place at the right time on defense. We know that we aren't going to turn over other teams, so we have to do other things better. Against VCU, we had four or five perfect, consecutive clinical possessions. Maybe our guys got tired of doing it? Don't make the offense hard. Sometimes we make drives that are hard. We take shots that are hard. We don't need to do that. When we have other guys getting assists, it takes pressure off Yuri. "If you draw help, you have done your job. Make the next pass. Yeah, if the clock is under 8 you might have to shoot, but make the pass. Forrester, he played well in stretches against VCU. To an extent, when he or Okoro hasn't played well, the other has stepped up. When one gets into foul trouble, the other has to play longer than we plan. They both have their strengths. Forrester has a great knack of catching balls around the rim and finishing. Okoro is a more of a high level defender and a rebounder above the rim. When Jake maintains focus, a lot of good things happen. Two fouls in first half: We have been in serious foul trouble at Davidson and Fordham. CF: My rule always is two fouls you come out. Yes I will put a player back in if I feel the game is getting out of hand. If we stay in the game, you can be more aggressive in the second half. If you put a guy in and he gets a third in the first half, he won't be playing aggressive for the first 10 minutes in the second half. Couldn't be more pleased with Hughes. He totally understands our offense. He knows all our options. He has proved since day 1 that he can defend. With Fred going down, Hughes has taken over his D roll a little bit. We need to get Hughes in their more, particularly for his defense. He can get around people. Yes we are disappointed in the losses. But we have our best still in us. Anyone in the top 5 or 6 can still win the league. But we have an 8 game schedule remaining, and we need to get to 1-0 tomorrow night. Don't worry about the standings. Toughest part of the schedule is coming up. Rhode Island is playing their best ball of the year. They have won 2 of their last 3, including beating Dayton at home. Some good one-on-one players. We have to play a complete 40 minute game. They have proven players in Leggett and Freeman. They will play 4 guards. Then we go to Dayton. You know what you are walking into. They are big and long with an NBA center. CF doesn't watch A10 games, as he is watching tape of the next opponent. He does watch NBA. Everyone equates success to the NCAA tourney. But the A10 has a lot of decent talent. It is a very tough league. Fordham is an example, not getting national attention. They can win any game they play. Top to bottom the league is balanced. 8PM start against Rhode Island. We have had a bunch of great crowds. I don't blame the crowd for being frustrated after the VCU game. Saturday, I ordered a carry out pizza from Dewey's. I pulled my hat down over my head trying to hide when I went in. A guy recognized me and came over and said "we are behind you. Yeah we were disappointed, but we will be there at the next game." I appreciate that. We need to great fans to continue to support the team. FWIW, CF is picking the Chiefs in the Super Bowl. Cowboy II
-thanks Hoosier -I wonder if the staff didn't see in the preseason the defense causing turnovers because the offense they were guarding was turning it over enough on its own? -"Couldn't be more pleased with Hughes" "We need to get Hughes in there more" These go to my point a week or two ago that CFord gives ammo to his detractors.
