Bay Area Billiken
SLU and Maryland have only played each other once in history, in the First Round of the 1994 NCAA Tournament at the Kansas Coliseum in Wichita, KS. SLU was the 7 Seed and wore the home white uniforms. Maryland, the 10 Seed, led by freshman Joe Smith, won 74-66. That was the Charlie Spoonhour SLU renaissance season, 23-5, began 14-0, with even President Bill Clinton commenting about the team. That was Erwin Claggett and Scott Highmark's Junior year. Old guy
For those of you planning to attend the tournament, welcome to the world of Indian Casinos. This one is run by the Mohegan Tribe and is located near New London CT. New London is the place where the Navy builds its nuclear subs. For those of you interested in this kind of thing you might want to check up to see if General Dynamics Electric Boat Co. is offering any tours to visitors. This casino, like all casinos, provides excellent food at reasonable prices, good accommodations, plus all kinds of entertainment besides the tournament, on the hopes that you will be induced to part with some money gambling on the floor. Have fun and try to resist the temptation. The 4 participants in the tournament are all current 3 game winners: SLU A10, Miami ACC, Maryland Big 10, and Providence Big East. This is truly a magnificent set of participants. It will be great to watch! Go Bills! BilliKat and David King like this

I guess all 4 are going to learn a lot about how good they are this weekend. It's not just that these 4 teams are undefeated but that they all are pretty much equal. The sad thing is a good team will leave Mohegan with an 0-2 record.

slu72
Here’s a thought. Last year we had late leads against some good teams, especially Pearl’s gems. They couldn’t close. We almost did the same against a solid Memphis team. Why? We have improved our overall talent. 1) Last year Okoro was just getting his legs back in those games. Then became a force in conf play. He’s back to being the top 50 recruit that went to Oregon. 2.) The addition of Pickett whose a warrior. 3) Yurimania looks improved over last year. 4) Javonte Perkins is back. Maybe not all the way but a 70% Perk is still an improvement over last year. 5) If Perk has to sit we have Parker. He may not be the Perk incarnate, but he looked good against Messphis. He’s made the team better. 6) Fred is continuing his solid play from what we saw in conf play last year. We are much improved over last year. As long as we continue to push the tempo this team can beat any team. But, we’ve got to step it up on the Defensive end.

Because the antidote to closing-itis, the guy who did the closing two years ago, isn't capable of doing that at the moment. So we're going to muddle through until then. Parker is always in attack mode so he could make teams pay for ganging up on Yuri with a little more experience.

Matty Light
Honestly, the best tactic for closing out games with a lead is having a guard that can draw a foul of the dribble with a stutter step or a stop and go, and then sink the FTs. I think Yuri can be that guy this year. With the defensive pressure up, opposing guards play too close to their man providing the opportunity to draw in the defender for a bump. Kwamain was great at this. And would nail the FTs. Goodwin and Jett were good at getting the bump but unsteady on the FTs aspect. I think Yuri is ready to play this role. Memphis saw it and I hope it is the beginning of a trend to come. almaman likes this

I am not talking about under 30 seconds down 4 where a foul must be made immediately. Yes, you would prefer Gibby. I am talking about scenarios like up 6 with 2 minutes to go and you are in the bonus. You draw a bump in the backcourt and get 2 freebies. You will see excellent teams do this. It works. It forces the other team to hit a ridiculous number of 3s to cut into the lead. It limits the chance of an empty possesion, and it also has a psychological effect. Have you ever seen down four with 60 seconds elect to play for a defensive stop instead of fouling only to get called for a bump with 5 left on the shot clock? It is deflating. Old guy
Significant change on the Team Rankings expectations for the game with Maryland. They expect SLU to win, 2 stars of confidence. The Vegas spread is 4 pts in SLU's favor. Fraz and Bauman, hope you are happy with the "spread."
