Kyla takes the term 'Ball Hog" to new heights.

I seriously don't know how the other ladies can take it.

KM is an absolute enigma. Easily the smoothest, most fluid, shot on the team. But she misses, misses, and misses some more. Brutal. 20 misses are 20 turnovers. Coach took her out for about five minutes in second quarter. SLU was probably +10 during that time.

Also, I love Brooke on defense. Completely disrupts the opposition. Veritable human eraser and solid rebounder. But I don’t get running transition offense through her. She is not a female Oduro. 4 out of five times a pass to Brooke in transition is a turnover.  Needs to cease.

Victory in front of the national TV audience, nice!  80-69 over Dayton (always a happy day when the Billikens defeat the Flyers).  Slow start for the Billikens, but they stayed close and really poured it on in the second half. Mostly a good defensive effort, but sometimes the Flyers scored too easily, especially on multiple open 3 pt shots, but the Billikens adjusted. 4 Billikens in double figures scoring, Julia Martinez 18 pts, Kyla McMakin 16 pts, Brooke Flowers 15 pts, Kennedy Calhoun 11pts, and two Billikens close behind, Peyton Kennedy 9 pts, Mia Nicastro 8 pts. 13 rebounds and 6 blocks for Brooke Flowers, so a few more blocks and she would have been looking at a triple double. Julia Martinez got 8 steals, she was stealing basketballs as easily as Kia’s parked downtown are stolen. First appearance for Nafatoumata Haidara (not sure if this was due to injury or if now that the spring semester started she’s academically eligible, but glad to have her.
The band was rocking, did I hear some new songs from them? Band observers at the next men’s home game will have to check in and report then.

-I watched most of the 2nd half and wonder how the Bills could keep getting beat down the floor, craziest of this might have been off SLU shooting free throws!  00 was last down the floor several of those times but had strength enough to shoot 17 times

-11 point win with 10 coming in Q4, SVU was up 63-61 with 5min left and didn't get off 63 until there were 50 seconds left and SLU had scored 12 straight

-always good to beat SVU

You definitely love to see it, especially after the years of A10 dominance on the women's side.

5 games into this conference season Dayton has 3 losses, which equals the total number of regular season losses in the last 3 seasons combined. Ouch

Unbelievable this coach continues to allow McMakin to constantly jack shots. Shes shot at or above 40% in four games. 4!! Out of 20! Kudos to other players for not just quitting.

Check out McMakin's numbers at Longwood:

https://longwoodlancers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/kyla-mcmakin/4771

It's been pointed out that Longwood is in a worse conference, but also that McMakin put up #s against some really non-conference opponents teams in the past at Longwood.  It wasn't like she'd been just purely padding stats beating up on terrible teams.

When the rest of our team isn't setting the world on fire offensively, I get why Tillett has faith in McMakin.  She was a great player for her for 3 years at Longwood.  It's just that McMakin has been in a shooting funk seemingly all season & presumably will be gone next year*.  If we're going to be mediocre, I'd rather get players involved that will contribute in the future.  Hopefully Tillett begins to curb her minutes / shots unless she gets hot scorching hot.

* - I'm actually not sure on this.  She's listed as a Senior, but presumably she has a COVID year that she could use.  She was listed as a Junior for Longwood last season.

Julia Martinez is the A10 player of the week, we’ll deserved honor for her play:

Saint Louis University senior guard Julia Martinez is the Atlantic 10 Conference women's basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 9-15, the league office announced Monday. It is the first A-10 weekly honor of Martinez' career.

In games against Rhode Island and Dayton last week, Martinez led the Billikens with 16.0 points per game, 6.0 assists per game, 4.5 steals per game and 76.5 percent (13-of-17) field goal shooting. She also grabbed 9.5 rebounds per contest.

Martinez narrowly missed the first triple-double in Saint Louis women's basketball history against A-10 co-leader Rhode Island Jan. 12, tying for team-high honors with 14 points, matching her career best with a game-high 14 rebounds and dishing out a game- and season-high eight assists.

In a victory over Dayton Jan. 15, Martinez posted game highs of 18 points and a career-high eight steals – just one shy of the school record – and added five rebounds, four assists and two blocks.

Martinez leads Saint Louis in steals (3.3 spg) and offensive rebounding (3.6 orpg), ranks second in total rebounding (7.7 rpg) and assists (3.1 apg), and is third in scoring (9.9 ppg). She leads the A-10 and ranks ninth nationally in steals per game, and she stands fourth in offensive rebounding and ninth in total rebounding in the conference.

Up next for the Billikens is a trip to Pittsburgh to take on Duquesne Wednesday, Jan. 18.

Billiken loss on the road, but only by 5 points, 68-63. Looked like it was going to be a blowout by the Dukes, but the Billikens fought hard to bring it close, outscored them by 16 points in the final 2 quarters, but that’s not enough when you start out down by 26-8 after the first quarter.  Two Billikens had a double double, Brooke Flowers 13 pts 12 rebs, Julia Martinez 10 pts 10 rebs. Kyla McMakin had 14 pts on 4-20 shooting, 1-9 from 3 pt range. Overall team slash line .288/.222/.882. So not good shooting and one bad quarter, seems like that’s been the case a lot of the time this year.

The Lisa Stone holdovers continue to prove they're the best.

Billikens lose 75-71 against Davidson in Belk.  Tough loss on the road, Davidson got the lead late when Julia Martinez got in foul trouble with 4 fouls in the 3rd period. They kept it close, tough loss on the road but the Billikens can be proud of the effort.  4 Billikens in double figures, Brooke Flowers had 24 pts, Julia Martinez 19, Kyla McMakin and Mia Nicastro 10 pts each.  Mia Nicastro is having a good freshman season, coming along nicely.

2nd half of the season has shown the Lisa Stone holdouts are shouldering the bulk of the offense and defense.
