what kind of career did Upchurch have? guess I could Bing it, but I recall thinking he hadn't been crazy good after the B S with SLU admissions.

He scored over 1800 points. He was all Southwest Conference 1st team 3 years.

The Upchurch decision occurred in the Summer of 1987, during transition between Fr. Fitzgerald, whose tenure as SLU President ended in 1987, and Fr. Biondi.  Fr. Biondi was appointed SLU President in August 1987.  I do not believe he had involvement, or at least significant involvement, re Upchurch.  The decision would have been right before or about the time he was appointed, and he probably had not yet taken the reins.

The Academic Vice-President at the time was Fr. John Hubert (Hugh) Gray, S.J.

I was just listening to the song about his brother, Edmund, a little bit earlier today. I should have known that. The gap between Reinert and Biondi was filled by some good men for the University’s continued growth. Having spent a summer interning for UTAS and Laura Geiser back in the day, I spent some time in the archives. Highly recommended!
