Old guy
Loved Taj's comments about the refs. Not a nice game, we should have done better but did not. However a win is a win regardless. We went 5 pts below the Vegas line but we won. Two points can be made, they hustled better than we did, and we still have trouble with zone defenses. cheeseman
Three ways to beat a zone - hit from the perimeter, attack the basket, or play better defense and rebound offensively. We usually find ourselves running a weave or standing around dribbling 30 feet or more away. Neither will beat a zone. Ford just doesn't seem to know how to coach the players to play against a zone and I am not sure why. Surely somebody on the staff knows - it ain't rocket science. Please don’t say “defense.” Nesbitt won the game for us in the second half. An ISU friend was impressed with Nesbitt. I thought it was strange too, but he ended up playing a lot defensively over the last few minutes.

Based on his personnel choices, Coach Ford thinks he can beat the zone by playing two point guards -- Yuri and Jones -- but I think he'll eventually give that up. Jones doesn't turn the ball over but he isn't good enough at attacking off the dribble to help us there.
Franchise_08
Let’s just hope Coach Poach message doesn’t carry over 3 years later. Still one of the most embarrassing moments in CBB history.

But we all know it’s lurking somewhere, probably in the Duquesne or Dayton game That would make Ford the same as every other coach in the country. 99 of 100 coaches lose a game their fans think they should have won every year. cgeldmacher, bauman and RUBillsFan like this
Zink
Hargrove and Collins combined for 14 turnovers. That’s 3.2 more than we’d averaged as a team so far. Feel like a reminder to play within themselves is in need. Thank god Nesbitt stepped up to make big shots, and Jimerson to ice it. We just played about as poorly as we can and came away with a win against a decent team. Not pleased but I’ll take it. Let’s clean up our act and trounce SFA. Yuri refuses to shoot 3s and Jones is so little that he needs a lot of space just to get his shot off… not a great combo against zone. And has jimerson ever attempted a 3 where his toe wasn’t right on the line? Can’t remember seeing him hit a deep 3, ever.
Bay Area Billiken
Having decompressed post-game, I’m glad SLU won, feel a sense of relief. Onward- it would have been better had Buffalo from the mid-major MAC won in terms of the computer ratings. But next on the docket is Stephen F. Austin, which is now in the WAC. cgeldmacher
Just remember to have perspective. We were supposed to win. We one. Think about this, Dayton has lost their last three games to UMass-Lowell, Lipscomb, and Austin Peay. We are 5-1 with our only loss being to a top 10 team. Don't worry. Be happy. Perspective is important here. Some of Yuri's turnovers were equal parts blame if not more on behalf of the teammate he was passing to. One of them was a bad no-call body foul. Some of them were the result of him having to carry his own weight and that of four others to beat a tough zone defense that we struggled with. He still had a 1:1 A/T ratio and stacked a number of other respectable stats on top of that. The final margin of 6 points is hardly accurate, as we didn't play to stretch the lead in the final minutes rather to hold on to it and slow the game down. It didn't feel like a single digit game in the last 2 minutes. Traveling to Mexico and playing in a hotel has to be difficult for the guys, lets see how they come out looking tonight. We won the game and it taught some good lessons - relax.

That ballroom is also pretty much just Rose Hill Gym without the character.
