  • Brighton changed the title to How the Atlantic 10 stacks up with the Big East

Looking at this quickly on my phone while simultaneously ordering Nacho Mamas but curious why you chose to keep some schools off certain lists? Fordham USNWR ranking would be 4th. What’s Richmond’s endowment?

I’ll take a pint of spicy salsa too please

I am not sure what Endorsements have to do with any of this but I am surprised at how pedestrian Georgetown’s Endowment is. I would have thought it would have been several multiples of this.

It is the third largest for a Catholic University.  Boston College is number 2.  That surprised me. SLU comes in fourth.

Georgetown is inside DC, that means there are no State subsidies to the University and they have to do what they do with Federal and alumni funds plus endowments. I believe they have to dip deeper into the endowment than other Catholic Universities receiving State funds.

Private Universities don’t get state funds or government funds unless they are research grants. I am not talking about PEL type grants which go to individual students.

Every major University with Law School, Med School, and active basic science research programs gets a lot of grants, Georgetown is included in this group. However Georgetown's grants come from Federal sources and from private corporations. There are no state grants supporting Georgetown's research. I am not up to date in Georgetown's research achievements, so I will mention only two. Kidney Dialysis was developed and first used in patients through research at 4 Medical Centers including Georgetown (Schreiner), and flexible laparoscopes were developed and brought to use in a number of Medical Centers including Georgetown (Brick). The government finances the bulk of research in the US, both via State Grants and Fed. Grants. Without these grants private Universities would be unable to finance and support a lot of their facilities.

Willie, there is a hell of a lot more that is involved in financing a major University (SLU included) that goes way beyond students and student fees or grants. Research is a major source of income for SLU as it is for Georgetown, and MIT.
