All of this St. B stuff is interesting.  What would make it even better is if one of the posts would mention who they were playing.

Ha. Good one. Can’t you read minds? They were playing Canisius, who is a long time rival. Campus are 90 min apart.  Capacity crowd.

I like the graphics SBUnfurled puts together.  You can easily see where Osunniyi was hurt, late in the first half, and where Durosinmi game in.

Save for Osuni, their starting 5 all played more than 35 minutes. Does this mean their bench is still weak? If so, they can be had as long as we don't play to their strength, ie slow ball. We did that in the tourney game last year and it cost us. We should be able to wear them down by playing fast. Recall how in the last season of Rick's boys under Crews, our 5 starters eventually got wore out as the season progressed.

we should never ever play slow with this roster and it's skill set.   even when winning big, it is better to just pull the starters/regular rotation players and let the end of the bench finish the game.   i wouldnt even let them play slow as it's important they learn the needed mindset and skills to play the same way as well   they just wouldnt be expected to perform as well thus it should even the game up some at that point forward.

When you have the 5 starters that the Bonnies have, the depth of the bench isn't as important as it is with most teams.  Coulibaly is a definite upgrade over their 6th man from last year.  Brown is a JUCO All-American, whose time will come. Remember it took Perkins a while to transition from JUCO to D1 ball.  They have a handful of promising freshmen, whose time on the floor will be hard to get with those first 7.

Rammer has some very interesting comments on the Billikens playing fast.  Line up his two podcasts for some interesting comments.

Mark Schmidt is notorious for not using his bench.

It comes down to whether our offense is better than their defense.  When the answer was yes last year (pre-Covid), we ran right past teams, even the high major ones.  Will our offense still be humming in February?  We don't know.  It's a long season.  Stuff happens.

All starters played 33+ MPG last season and they've got the same starting lineup this year (last year's stats shown above).

Holmes, Adaway, Welch, and Lofton are each averaging 34.5-39.0 MPG through two games. Osunniyi hasn't played huge minutes, comparatively, as Pitt transfer Coulibaly is getting some run. It's also a little skewed because Adaway was suspended for the opener.

Bottom line is that Schmidt indeed keeps a short bench and they're going to try to slow everyone down again this season.

Wasn't Osun nursing a pre-season injury?  Or did I just make that up?  Could explain him not yet playing huge minutes.

Yes, a back injury. He aggravated it in the Canisius game, too. Which just kind of illustrates St. Bonaventure's major weakness, the lack of depth.

I can't find anything on the current status of his injury. He was on the bench. Seems like they were being cautious.

Schmidt would be lost if he couldn't be involved in every possession at both ends of the court.  He really needs to be in uniform.

Penn State was decimated by the transfer portal and the hiring of a new coach.  They started two guys listed at 6 feet.  They beat mighty Youngstown State at hom ein their opener .  They are not good as they shot 37% from the floor and 27% from three.  Buttrick was only 4 fo 12 on the night with three of his makes from three.  Meh.  You want a dark horse, let see what Mason has come Wednesday night at Maryland.

Fordhma outlasted St. Thomas 84 to 78.  St. Thomas had a chance.  Amazing fact --- St. Thomas jumped from NCAA Division III to NCAA Division I this year and joined the Horizon.  According to the Fordham announcers, their league asked them to leave --- they were too good.  They looked a lot like the Hickory team in "Hoosiers."

Duquesne took it on the chin again at home against Weber State 63 to 59.   Dambrot's team is a ragtag mess of freshmen and transfers.  Jackie Johnson, a 5'11" freshman from Wichita, scored 27 of the Dukes 59.  He lauched quite a few from the parking lot, making one from just over half court.  And it was not in desperation!  Here's a clue --- he goes strictly to his left.  A10 Rookie of the Week "Primo" Spears went 0fer from the floor and finished with two points.  Freshman.  Mostly wildly out of control.    Duquesne has no skills in the mid-rnage and deep shooting outside of Johnson's prayers.  There is no Dunn-Martin jacking it up on the wing.  Starters were a collective six-for-28.  The bench, short of Tobi Okani, was really weak.  And Okani is like Johnson and Spears and even Acuff, wild drives to the hoop.  Underneath, they are incredibly earth-bound.

Osunniyi is battling a lower back injury.  Coulibaly is a decent replacement for now.  He beats Shaw and Okoli and Ikpeze from year's past.  I think a real key will be to watch and see if Adams and Brown get any development prior to the conference season.  Any injury here to the starters is going to be a killer.

How did the UMass I saw some of tonight lose by 20 tonight?

No idea.  But UMass, as many teams, have a load of transfers they are working into their scheme.  There have been a lot of upsets in D1 thus far.  It may take time to get this all straightened out.

Yale, also, holds a victory over Vassar who I now know has a male basketball team.
