Gibson needs to learn how to better sell to the refs the fact he is getting held and manhandled constantly.  He starts getting more of those calls and the guys assigned him start getting in foul trouble, he will get more open looks.

He did this to close out the Boise game.  Came off the screen and stopped in his tracks to allow the defender to crash into him.. more of this

I would like to see more Yuri threes, this is one of the most pleasant surprises to the year so far.. he’s second on the team in 3P% almost at 40%.  Everyone goes under the screen so every three he takes is wide open.  If he forces defenders to come on top of the screen he will be even more effective in pick and roll and he’s already elite.

I would like to see Gibson extend his range, but that might be more of a summer project.  What would help most would be for another teammate or 2 requiring 2 defenders. I think the best candidates are Nesbit and Okoro. If we can keep playing games, we are at the part of the season where a highly rated Freshman or a player who sat the previous year, find another gear.

find another gear.

Ya if you suck at it

True - do you know what his acting ability is?  The point is if the ref is not calling the grab or hold then he is not going to call it even if you fall down - I could see the ref saying it wasn't a foul and so I think you are acting.  The best thing for GJ to do is fight hard through the grab or hold and hope the ref calls it.  Eventually they will.  Flopping will just tell the refs that you do it so ignore it.  If he was really being pushed and shoved hard he would not need to flop - a flop infers that you are embellishing.

Jimerson has his limitations, Yuri has his limitations, every player on the squad has his limitations.  The trick is for other guys to pick up the slack when Jimerson and Yuri are on the wrong side of a matchup.  Okoro  and Fred got the job done last game.  There will be opportunities for other players to do the same.  And then when Nesbitt finally emerges as "the man", the league is in trouble.

I think this should be more on ford telling refs to keep looking out and to yell at them about it. If it means a T… oh well.

First off it wasn’t really a criticism.  It was an observation.  Second, the fouls he is drawing are often not on the person guarding him on the perimeter, but normally on a person helping out as he drives to the basket.

I love what Gibson has done with his game this year.  The question people were asking was how he could get more open looks from the outside.  One way to do that is by drawing more fouls on the players guarding him on the perimeter. Forcing them to reduce all the clutching and grabbing he currently is experiencing.

of course it was a criticism...and he is doing exactly what you are asking, drawing more fouls....Jimerson is hampered by two main things, the lack of three point threats on the court with him ( hopefully JN can develop in to a threat) and his inability to create his own shot off the dribble...with this in mind, I don't see where he could do anything more than he is doing, and that is frequently attacking the basket, drawing fouls, and most importantly making the ft's....asking him to flop is ridiculous...i guess many on this board have decided that needs to be our next whipping boy...

And I'm sure if Travis believes a player is being fouled, he lets the officials know. GJim can make it obvious he's being grabbed and held without going as far as flopping. Not sure if it helps though

Exactly zero people have been whipping on Jimerson in this thread.  It is a strawman argument.  I have said it before on this board and I will say it again now,  I think their is a decent chance Jimerson is the leading all time scorer when he leaves SLU.  Right now he is on pace to end the regular season with 769 career points in 62 career games.  Bonner ended his sophomore season with 745 career points in 63 career games. I think if Jimerson plays two more seasons after this the chances are pretty good he ends up passing AB.

Thinking after 45 career games that Jimerson can become better at drawing fouls against the guys guarding him isn't a criticism.  It is part of the game that smart, savvy scorers like Jimerson develop as their career goes along.

if you read through the posts one might conclude that jimerson has so many limitations he should be benched. he doesnt have the range, doesnt draw fouls and should shoot at a higher percentage. i say based on comments he should not see the floor, oh wait a minute he averages 16 a game. Does anyone have a list a players that have done that in recents billiken seasons? it will be a rather short list

you need to reread the threads Brian...there have been repeated claims about him "not being able to hit the big shot"...

As for drawing more fouls, that would be a good point, except that is exactly what he is doing this year!!! he had a grand total of 12 free throw attempts last year and currently has 64!!! he ranks in the top 150 in the country ( out of approximately 4,000 players ) in ft attempts....so exactly what is your point????

...... All people are doing is suggesting ways for him to improve his game... Do you think Gibson himself is fine with where he is at right now?? I'm sure he is continuing to work and find ways to get better. Nobody here is being critical of the man. Just mbms throwing out ways that he can continue to improve. Relax

Based on his performance this year, Jimerson has taken a quantum leap in his ability to draw fouls.  He's improved more in that area more than any Billiken I've ever seen.  At this rate, he'll be leading the country in free throw attempts as a senior.

Agree here... He's going to keep working and keep getting better. He's rounded out his game, and, naturally, lost a little bit of his 3-point lethalness... I think, and hope, he's going to bring the 3-pt shooting % back up and then he'll average 18-20 per game in his latter years.

I love watching Gibson. It's fun having a guy that can score from any level. Whenever he gets a shot off, I consider it a quality possession.

Maybe one way to circle around a point I think @brianstl may be making is to say that Gibson has shown that he has an ability to draw fouls and get to the free throw line, something he did not do last year. If he leans into that new skill set even more, and does a better job of making it clear when he’s being held, clutched, grabbed, etc. then there is even more upside for his offensive game. If he wants to go from scoring 16 a game to 20 a game, some of that will come from the free throw line. If you watch some of the best scorers at his position in college basketball, they are maestros at drawing fouls off the ball.

If anything, I think it’s a compliment that people see Gibson as someone who has more upside as a scorer rather than just the gadget 3-point specialist he was his first two years.

Exactly.  Like I said earlier in this thread, I love what he has done with his game this season.  He has become excellent at drawing fouls when he is going to the basket.  The next step in his game will involve him becoming better at drawing fouls when guys are mugging him off ball on the perimeter.  When he starts doing that guys won't be able to play him as tight on the perimeter off ball and he will get more open looks on the perimeter as a result.

Ain't there still one warning before it's a technical? Free flop per game, might as well use it. And those are others' words, because in my eyes it isn't a flop. Surely he has to bust his a$s just to not find the floor on every possession because of the bumping, holding, groping....if he gives a little less effort he will be knocked to the floor and without selling anything.

His "flopping" won us the Boise St. game. We're not wrong to want to see more of that.

Jimerson has shot more FTs this year partially because he is our go to guy late in the game when we are leading by a small margin & teams are looking to foul.  Perkins got the ball in those situations last year.  That's not to say Jimerson hasn't done a better job drawing fouls this season.  He absolutely has.  Like everything else there are shades of gray here.

I said this before, I'd like to see him be more aggressive pushing off defenders and pushing or bumping defenders into screens to create space for himself on the perimeter especially when teams are being aggressive holding / pushing him.  He very rarely commits fouls himself (1.3 per 40 mins this season, 1.4 last season), so I'm not at all worried about him getting in foul trouble by picking up offensive fouls.

Someone did say they think Gibson often misses big shots late in games.  That's pretty light in terms of criticism, but I also don't think it is entirely valid.  I think this is primarily recency bias since he missed a 3 late against Iona, but there are some other examples of him missing shots late.  Important to remember though that even the best all time 3 pt shooters miss well over half their 3 pt shots.  I still absolutely want him taking those shots.

In no way do I think that any of this is turning him into the racially problematic term you used to describe what you perceive as MBMs bashing him.

That was me. I've kept a mental note and he hit one big ish one this year can't remember who it was against. But yes he's missed quite a few chances at daggers this year and last year. Now am I saying I don't want him to be the one taking those shots, absolutely not. I want him to take em every time because I have confidence that he will start to hit them and even if he doesn't. Shooters shoot.

Kevin Lisch scored half his points shooting free throws late in games.
