+ Helluva bench

Agree, love to see an athletic big next.  Sekou Gassama had a bunch of big time interest at some point.  Anyone know his status?  Thinking his development has been slowed by an injury his JR year in HS.  With a deep team, might he be a good add?  And need a backup PG if Russell is not back.  Anyone know if Nesbitt has PG skills?

Our biggest need now is a back-up PG. Second need is a 4 who can rebound and play D. Ideally I would like a shot-blocker.

Nesbitt is our backup point guard.  That gives Thatch and Jimerson more minutes at the 2/3 when he slides over.

Starting caliber power forwards are red hot commodities in the portal so I totally understand if we can't get that piece.  A power forward in the A10 is a luxury, not a necessity.

The Okoro and Nesbitt transfers don't happen if the coaching staff does not play the recruiting long game.  Slow and steady wins the race.

I hate to say it, but Nesbit is a 4 who can rebound and play D. I think that is why he will end up getting a lot if PT next year, splitting time with Hargrove.

Apparently we're not done:

Interesting.   If a player the quality of Madsen has us (with a stacked guard contingent), a total rebuild at New Mexico, and a total rebuild at Iowa State as his top three options, then it's about to become a buyer's market for mid-major transfer guards real soon.

Is Madsen more a SG or PG?

19.mpg nearly 7 ppg as a freshman is pretty good. Coach's son oh yeah love to hear announcers harp on that fact.   If we get another good guard we may need to run a 4 out 1 in offense to get them all on the court.

I hope you are correct about Nesbitt serving as the backup point guard. That is an area of concern. From what I've seen from Williams and looking at his stats, he's not going to create for others. I love the fact that we now have a bunch of scoring options, but we need another reliable ballhandler/facilitator.

Does anyone know if he would have been allowed to transfer if he didn't start early at Memphis last season?  Can kids who have signed transfer before showing up at the school?  If that is the case, then thank goodness he went and got a look at Penny's operation and truthfulness first hand last year.

I dont think so but I am not 100% sure.  Someone on a Memphis board was upset they let him come to campus early because it basically gave him a "get out of jail free" card.

He couldn't have "transferred" but he could've asked for a release from his LOI, which basically all schools are doing these days when recruits change their mind before stepping on campus. Still, your last sentence is probably still true, since Nesbitt's early enrollment allowed him to see things up close.

He may be a coach's son, but who is his roommate?

There was a similar situation at Indiana University.  Parker Stewart transferred from UT Martin during the season when his father/coach passed away.  He arrived and practiced with the team, but never suited up for a game.  When Miller was canned, he jumped into the portal, but has since decided to stay with Coach Woodson.  I have no knowledge if he attended classes.  So in effect, he was going to transfer without playing a minute.

Ford is already a great recruiter.  However, I think in this new era of free transfers, he might develop an angle that makes him even better.  I get the impression that Ford is very honest with recruits about what would happen if they came here.  This may result in kids going elsewhere if they get smoke blown up their skirts by another coach.  Then the kid gets there, sees that the coach he committed to was full of it, and decides to transfer.  At that moment, the coach that may stand out to him, after just getting burned, is Coach Ford, the coach that was honest with him in his initial recruitment.  I think this is what happened with Nesbitt and what may happen with others.

If we start grabbing kids this way, they also would be coming to us with their worst college year (freshman) behind them.
