from following this guy's hype on twitter...  MSU fans wanted Izzo to go after him. He's a pretty big time transfer. I would be very happy with this get but that's just me.

Definitely more like Isabell than Weaver, plus a little taller. Shot mechanics are good, nothing quirky, and he shoots an actual jump shot, unlike a lot of players who shoot set shots and jump a little before releasing. Might take him some time to fit into Ford's system the way Isabell did, but this looks like an excellent pick-up.

How many role players have we signed that have multiple 30 point games on their resume?

Not 30 point games, but Jake Barnett put some big nights as freshman at Toledo and had a better all around game.  Williams is a role player if he doesn't expand his all-around game over the summer.

He doesn't have the all around game Isabell had.  Isabell would get assists, grab rebounds, attempt to play some defense and could score in ways that didn't involve jacking up a 3.

Only problem with that comparison is that Barnett did that on a talent shy team that won only 4 games. Somebody had to take the shots and he was it. His stats at SLU were nowhere near that good and, personally, I thought he was a mostly a disappointment, taking nothing away from the deep three he hit against N.C. State. Seems to me Williams has way more upside potential (always loved hearing Hubie Brown describe every draft pick as having "upside potential") than Barnett.

I agree that he is a role player if you put him on a good team.  I'm just pointing out that, at his best, he's the explosive kind.

It's interesting how potential transfers can only be compared to former transfers. Does Rashad Williams have nothing in common with former Billikens that started their careers here? Kind of like how white guys are only compared to other white guys, etc.

Are you thinking he might be a Reggie Bryant type more than Isabell? Or more of like an Ash Yacoubou?

The third rule of transfer comparisons is you can't compare a player transferring up from a school like Oakland to SLU to players that transferred down like Villanova to SLU.

So here are the rules as I see it:

1) Same race

2) Transfers only

3) Transfer up or transfer down

4) Same position

5) Similar statistics

Once all those things are checked off, just start rattling off names and see if any of them fit the highlight videos of the person transferring in.

You also cannot compare a left-handed player to a right-handed player, and vice verse.

I like the Reggie Bryant comparison. Bryant was a guy who could create his own and settled for a lot of jumpers.  I could see Williams being the first option on a team where Drejai, Polk and Danny Brown are your guards.  That's probably the talent level of the team he comes from.

I still remember the radio interview of RM before he even coached a single practice when he explained his philosophy and said his two most important positions were the 1 and 4...

Never heard anything similar from Ford. No problem basing your team on JGood and French but JGood is not a PG or playmaker and French never added to his game. Where would we be had we not lost the S2 guys?  And he tried w Gordon and Santos and then filled in with Linssen. Not bad but not his first plan.
But where are we going? How can a former PG (Ford) not have more depth at that that position?
And I dont care about efficiency percentages and other stats - but Thatch will never be our scorer and is not what we had expected- our defensive specialist - and bc of his serious and unexpected illnesses likely may never be - another setback to Ford. Jacobs is gone but he was never the PG or answer. Are we going in a new direction with Lorentsson maybe playing the 4 and stretching defenses?  And Strickland playing the wing - JGood’s spot - sounds like a great kid and athlete but I doubt he dribbles much. So we will return Strickland,  Fred, Hargrove and Gibson who can’t or dont dribble much and only Jimerson who can really shoot it?

Too many guys who are elite at A but deficient at B. Hard to win game in and game out over a long season with team‘s who can and will scout us and exploit our weaknesses.

That's interesting, because I remember that first interview as well and RM talked about wanting to run quite a bit when he was here.  He launched into this crazy (mad scientist crazy) explanation about how he wanted us to cross over each other in a criss-cross style when running the break.  I watched for it and did not see us do that once during his coaching time here.  Also, I don't recall us fast breaking much at all when was here.  I'm not criticizing that we didn't, and I thought he was a tactical genius on the sidelines, but my point is that coaches say a lot of things.  When it comes down to winning or losing the game, that stuff goes out the window and you just do what you need to do to win.

I frankly don't care if Ford wants the team to run, or play bully ball, or press, or changes defenses constantly, or has a traditional point guard or point guard by committee.  All I care about is us winning.  If Ford does that, I'll be happy.
