Is that an automatic goalie interference call?

Goalkeeper interference is when an opposing player stands deliberately in front of the goalkeeper to block them from playing the ball.

So Abbie Miller was definately not standing in front of the goalie. The goalie also didn’t have control of the ball, so goalie interference wouldnt apply. So we are back to offsides being the only thing I could see. If Miller had stayed in the goal (out of bounds), would the goal have counted?  I’m also not sure it was offsides either, there were GM defenders basically on the line after all.

Right, Miller was no deeper than either of them. I circle back to believing the linesman may have thought it went off her arm.

If Abby bumped the Keeper while reentering the field of play before the ball went in the goal, it can absolutely be called a foul, it's irrelevant if it's deemed interference or just a foul.

In yesterday’s game, Abbie Miller was called for impeding the goalkeeper (who had a nice game) on Sydney Beach’s goal. (The goalkeeper does not have to have possession of the ball to make this call.) The result is an indirect free kick for George Mason.

The opportunity was created by Emily Gaebe who dragged two defenders to just outside of the right side penalty area for foul. Anna Walsh who had just checked into the game, took the shot off of the cross bar, (where Miller followed the shot into the goal). and where Sydney Beach headed in the rebound.

A minute or so later, Emily Gaebe occupied two more defenders, had her shot blocked, and Hannah Sawyer finished the rebound.

After watching the replay, I believe the official made the correct call.

Traitor.

Yeah, Miller went in between the near post and the keeper as she was trying to make the play. Maybe unintentional, maybe a little sh!thousery, but they got the goal seconds later so it doesn't matter in the end.

Looking at the stats, SLU has had a definite problem with converting opportunities into goals the past two games. The first  11 games, they took 184 shots, 88 of them on goal, and scored 36 goals. In other words, they scored a goal every 4.72 shots they took, or every 2.44 shots on goal. The last two games, they took 63 shots, 28 of them on goal. In other words, they scored a goal every 15.75 shots they took, or every 7 shots on goal. That’s what they need to work on, finishing the shots.

SLU has a new 2024 commitment from Audrey Smith.

An up top, finishing forward, Audrey helped lead her Fort Zumwalt South team to back to back Missouri Class 3 State Championships.

Along the way, Audrey scored a hat trick in both state title games. And, she set the record for single season goals at her high school this past season with 35. Audrey was First Team All Conference, and, First Team Missouri Class 3 All State.

In club ball, while playing forward and wing, Audrey helped lead her SLSG 06 Navy U16 team, to the ECNL U16 National Championship this Summer. Her team went undefeated in the rugged Midwest Conference this past year, and in the playoffs as well. Audrey also briefly played some Super Cup prior to her high school season.

For those that asked, Audrey was recruited by schools in the ACC, SEC, Big 10, Big 12, and elsewhere. Big get for SLU, a very competitive recruitment. She’s very good in combination play and in space. She can play up top or wide in SLU’s system.

Audrey is one half of the Dynamic Duo of Miller and Smith. 2024 SLU commit Ashley Miller led the area in assists setting up many of Audrey’s goals.

…………..

SLU has a few other good recruiting situations going on as well.

SLU RPI is 14 after Thursday night.

Xavier 0 at Georgetown 0. Nice effort there.

Notre Dame over NC State 3-0.

Arkansas 1-0 at Florida.

Big opportunity for Nebraska Saturday at home vs Ohio State.

Congrats to 2024 commits Ulla Sharp and Hope Kim for their recent inclusion in the IMG rankings.

Nice win on the road against UMass, 3-0. The offensive punch supplied by Lyndsey Heckel and Sophia Stram (yes, I typed that right, the defense supplied the offense on corner kicks).  The last goal was late in the game by Caroline Kelly.  Two assists by Anna Walsh on the first two goals.  SLU ended up getting more and more in control of the game as it moved along. They outshot UMass 21-6, 14-3 in shots on goal, 9-2 on corners (where they got the 2 goals from). UMass really couldn’t generate any sustained offense. A good win for the Billikens. Hannah Larson started, but played only 33 minutes total. All in all a good win.

And I see VCU took down Dayton, so that’s good.  While SLU and Dayton are still tied in in the conference standings with 18 points each, SLU is 6-0 while Dayton is now 6-1. Dayton rests on Thursday, so SLU can gain on them there. SLU at Dayton on October 16th is probably the biggest game left on the schedule. Then they get VCU at home on the 20th. First though, take care of business when Rhody comes to town this Thursday. Remember, Rhody beat us in the regular season last year, and in the quarterfinals we needed a late goal to bring it into overtime, where Lyndsey Heckel got the golden goal off the corner kick. They matched up well against us both games last year, so SLU needs to be on their game, no looking ahead on the schedule. This year Rhody is 1-3-3 in conference, 2-7-6 overall.

SLU has a new 2024 commitment from Addy Lang. Addy was one of the more highly recruited defensive midfielders in the country. She can also play center back if needed. Addy is a very versatile defender who can control a game, and also get forward and take set pieces.

First Team All Conference. First Team All State at Blue Valley Southwest High School in Kansas.(as was her older sister) Addy is a high school teammate of Hope Kim.

Addy helped lead her KC Athletics Club team to the Midwest Conference Title this past season, where she plays with 2023 SLU commit Ashley Koch.

Addy and Ashley will be playing in a league derby tonight against 05 Sporting Blue Valley.

Addy chose SLU over some of the very best teams from the WCC, Big Ten, SEC, Big 12, SEC, Pac 12

Couldn’t agree more. There are some impressive looking recruits coming into the program, credit to the Coach and her staff.  SLU is looking like a top destination for women’s soccer.  Right now as of Oct 9th, their RPI is number 14 as well. Go Billikens!

It seems like KS is really focusing on the KC area.

Recruiting is win some, lose some, collectively get better.

SLU currently has players from 9 states and over a dozen geographies within those states. (The Men have players from 14 states and 7 countries). SLU Women will add 2 additional states in 2023. The Men’s team has one of the best recruiting classes nationally despite losing recruits to Virginia and Northwestern just this past week.

With recruiting, each year or cycle is different.

SLU Women have 2 commits from the Kansas City area in 2024. (They are not finished yet with that also) They also have 2 in the 2023 class. The current team has 3 players from that geography. (Generally, SLU recruits from 4 different club teams there)

As a team, SLU recruits locally, the state, the region, nationally, internationally. In the 2024 class SLU has targeted roughly 50-75 players from about 20 states. 10 or so of those were from Kansas City (2nd to St. Louis).

Players are targeted by either talent and/or position, and tiered that way.

The players from KC that SLU recruited and chose elsewhere, chose in no order: Santa Clara (2), Utah, SMU, Kansas State.

SLU has 3 local Stl commits in the 2024 class. Some of the other highly targeted players chose: Alabama (2), Arkansas, Indiana, Illinois.

SLU doesn’t recruit every high level local (or national) player. Maybe yes, maybe no. So there are always a few/some additional very good players that chose elsewhere that SLU didn’t target. Some of those players chose Mizzou, Michigan State, Indiana, Purdue.

And then there are some good local (and non local) players that are on SLU’s list, but in the end, they don’t quite get that level of SLU offer. They end up elsewhere where they are more of  a priority and can play more. There are several in this group.

SLU also targets a few to some highest level superstar national players from all over the country. Some of those players chose North Carolina.

Two other high level national attacking players that seriously considered SLU chose South Carolina and Purdue. A few others picked Michigan and Xavier.

SLU has 2024 commitments from 5 of its high level priority targets. Many other high level soccer schools wanted those players. A lot of grind and effort went into landing these players.

Win some, lose some. Collectively get better.

-thanks, it sure seems like the talent just keeps building and there won't be a dip when certain players have their playing time come to an end

You and Courtside are clearly right in that the incoming recruits over the next few years will generally be players who were ranked higher than some of the players who will be timing out on their eligibility,  BUT even with the quality of new talent at SLU, it will be tough to replace players like Lawler, Groark, Friedrich, Halverson and Miller.  They have truly laid the foundation that Katie (and staff) is now building upon.

-I disagree with you, the foundation was put in place earlier by CKatie and players
