I gave a scouting report for the Ole Miss game. So, here is one for the game at Rutgers next weekend.

Rutgers won the regular season Big Ten Title without losing a game. They lost in the Conference Tourney Final. 18 wins. Top 5 ranking and top 5 RPI. An NCAA 1 seed.

They get a lot of players from Players Development Academy (PDA), one of the best club programs Nationally in NJ. Two of their coaches have long affiliations there.

Rutgers plays an interesting 4-3-3, that at times, will look like 3 in back, 1 in the defensive midfield. They get a lot of people forward. Lots of short interior passing in the attacking third.

Good, reliable experienced, Goalkeeper, Meagan McClelland, (12 shutouts, 2nd, 3rd team Big Ten multiple years)

Gabby Provenzano, isn’t the biggest Center Back, but she’s very good, tough, efficient, converted midfielder. Great distributor. Injured at the end of Conference Tourney Title game. (Quad, wrapped, but will likely play the full 90)  Leader, Captain, makes saving plays in back. Big Ten Defender of the Year. The length is next to her with Emily Mason. Misal, and Lynch outside, with Banks rotating in at outside back.

While it’s a very good backline, I think there is an opportunity wide, deep into the corners switching fields and with diagonal balls. And, I think up top SLU can test Provenzano’s injury durability and play physical there in the middle with Gaebe and Kelly.

Becci Fluchel, is another take charge player in the middle of the defensive midfield. Brocious is a solid player. Daigle gives good bench minutes in the midfield.

Frankie Tagliaferri is the Big Ten Midfielder of the Year. All American. Central attacking mid, who can and does finish often. Have to find her at all times, anywhere near 25 yards out for combo play and finishing. She was a 4 year starter and star at Penn St. before transferring to Rutgers for her 5th year. Similar to some of her teammates, she is often in the right place at the right time, and she finishes any mistakes.

Up top, Rutgers will have Amirah Ali at Forward in the middle. All American. First Team all Big Ten. Have to make her play as a target, back to goal, no turns, and double her. Great finisher and combo player. Can’t let her get away in transition. She’ll play for Portland NWSL next year.

Riley Tiernan was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, and Sam Kroeger will play the wings. Need to keep both of them as wide as possible. Tiernan vs Halverson will be a key matchup if Halverson plays the right side. (I think that would be the matchup and move Houck to the left side). Super dangerous 1v1, can score equally with either foot. Plays with pace and she makes frequent runs down the left side. Kroeger is small, but super skilled and crafty. Likes to cut in from the right side with her left foot. Terrific combo player. She’s left footed). Can take end swing corners.

Rutgers likes to play lots and lots of short corners.

Rutgers attacks often on the ground up the middle through Tagliafferi and Amirah, from Provenzano and Fluchel out of the back. They also will attack wide left often with Tiernan. Kroeger diagonal runs.

SLU would do well to pressure Rutgers’ outside backs, trying to force turnovers from distribution, and get quick transition before Rutgers can get forward with their 4 attacking players up front. Have to pinch the middle. Have to play physical.

In back, SLU has to limit Rutgers’ dangerous transition, especially if dmids miss tackles. Need 6 defenders out to 25 yards. Attackers have to help out and match numbers that Rutgers will throw forward. No through balls, double around the 18.

Big challenge. But SLU can win the game. Have to play as well as they did at Ole Miss, for 90 minutes. Should be fun.

Is it also just on ESPN+?

No. For anyone that won’t be able to make today’s game in person, it will be on Big Ten Plus, free, without subscription. (There was discussion this week as to which carrier would stream the game.)  None of the NCAA games via Big Ten Plus, (Men or Women) will require a subscription throughout the tourneys. And, there have been several.

There are some unusual situations as well. Wisconsin v UC Irvine is at George Mason, while Georgetown is hosting Santa Clara on campus. Georgetown usually has their games streamed vis FloSports. They were able to work it out to get those games on ESPN+

Separately, there has been a lot of negative feedback from coaches with the NCAA, about the NCAA pairings and earlier round travel limits. Many teams want to play different teams from different parts of the country in the post season.

Rutgers 4 SLU 0.

It may just be easier to bump or re-read the pregame scouting report above.

Rutgers was able to feed their strengths up the middle, and, SLU was unable to get deep into the corners pressuring outside backs, nor did they get enough offense with transition d.

Let’s take a look:

Rutgers didn’t lose a Big Ten Game. Top 5 rank. Top 5 RPI. There are roughly ten or less teams that can play on a similar level, when Rutgers is clicking and playing well.

Upsets can and do happen. UCLA is one of the better/best teams I’ve seen both of the past two years, and they lost to UC Irvine early. It happens. Rutgers is a top level team, and, on this night they played at a top level. (It doesn’t always happen) When they get it going, they play good attractive soccer, that is tough to defeat.

SLU could have decided to come out and play 8 or more behind the ball as some other teams do vs Rutgers, to make the score closer, slow down the game, and make those chances from distance a bit more flat footed. But SLU wanted to win or lose playing their own game. (which was fine) They just didn’t execute well enough and lost to a team that made some great plays.

It took some (not all) of SLU’s players a while to adjust to the pace of the game in the first half. Rutgers played well. Fast, efficient, organized, Credit to them. 3 of their 4 goals in the game were from beyond the 18, including a couple perfect shots from 25 yards.

4th minute was tic tac toe Rutgers style Soccer. Heckel’s left footed diagonal ball was short and turned over to Tiernan. This put Halverson who was making a run, up and out of position. Tiernan split two defensive mids, (Miller and Kohl) played the ball on the ground up the middle to Tagliaferri. She immediately slotted it for Ali as Heckel stepped out to her. Stram slow sliding to her left for help. 1-0. This is how Rutgers likes to play.

Rutgers did have a couple of other high quality first half chances. 2v2. Kroeger hit the post. Heckel was caught flat footed after she came out to play Kroeger. And Kroeger went by to her left, Kroeger’s strong side. A third was a rare long ball into the box behind the defense. 1-0 at half.

2nd half SLU did some things better despite the score. Those things were overshadowed by a handful of quality distance goals. Rutgers can be lethal in transition. Middle Center Backs had a tough night for SLU as did central D mids. Not enough wing support. Halverson, Friedrich, Puricelli had some good moments. Mason had a nice game at center back next to Provenzano.

Rutgers started Tiernan wide right instead of left and Halverson followed her there to start. This was a good O’Neill decision to give a different look, and, Halverson can be more effective offensively on the right side.

In the 2nd, another early half goal, as Tiernan gets in transition again. She gets the drop pass on the run, cuts left, drifts, hits it from 25 yards. Too much space given.

3rd goal, Tiernan in traffic, no problem. Creates her own space, hits from same spot, this time with a different foot. Great individual effort vs SLU’s Dmids. Two ridiculous finishes from distance.

4th goal, didn’t stop ball, similar to 2nd goal. Daigle, from just outside the 18. 4 transition goals. 3 from distance. Tough night in the defensive midfield. Elite level finishes.

SLU did better in the 2nd half closing through ball gaps and passing lanes with inside center backs. And, d mid support was there. But Rutgers didn’t need the in the box through balls and combo play up the middle. They were able to get 3 goals in transition, from outside the box, and threaten in other ways.

Rutgers likes to play up the middle, and make diagonal center of the field runs with their wings. Few long balls. And when wide, they cut in much of the time and work back to the middle. SLU was unable to get them to play more often on the width of the field.

Offensively Friedrich served some good top and side of the box target ground passes, that didn’t produce good enough first touch or combo play with wings. She also defended well. Halverson played well. Puricelli played a nice game in goal, which she does often.

Recruiting rankings aren’t everything. Many players under or over perform them. But with that said, Rutgers has something going with their local and regional recruiting especially with the coach’s club team affiliation. They not only get good players, they are getting the top National players that also happen to be local. Mason who had a nice game at center back, was top 5 nationally. Tiernan top 50. Daigle top 100. Girman and Slimmer just outside top 100. Kroeger was top 20. Brocious top 25. Misal top 40. Flucher top 65. Leskauskas top 70. Tagliaferri Top 5. And so on. Tagliaferri, Ali etc…23 players from New Jersey. A couple of other key players from NYC or PA. Many are from the same club program.

SLU as mentioned, keeps recruiting at higher and higher levels. There’s still a gap between the top 10 teams and others. The progress has been steady, and consistent. SLU now gets top 100 and top 150 players. Every SLU 2022/2023 recruit is a 3 star player.

SLU did well this season to rebound from a challenging start, to win the league tourney, and win over the #3 SEC Team in the NCAA Tourney to get to the round of 32. 2nd straight year in the NCAA Round of 32.

SLU just didn’t play a clean enough game v Rutgers. Gave up too many 1v1 and 2v2 downhill, in transition and space up the middle, and Rutgers finished well. And, Rutgers had 4 strong finishes. It happens. Good luck to Rutger. SLU will be back with much of its team next year, including some injured players, as well as some incoming recruits. Lots of depth. Lots of internal competition for playing time. Practice/training will be a great developmental area.

Just from the highlights those 2 shots from Tiernan were basically unstoppable for the Purcelli. The 1st goal was just bad communication. Heckel should have taken Ali while Stram stayed on the ball. I wouldn't say Stram didn't slide over quick enough as Heckel was still there and seemed oblivious to Ali. Had Heckel went with Ali earlier, Stram has more than enough time to get on the ball. I'd bet Emily P would like to have the 4th goal back. From reports in sounds like she made numerous nice saves but I bet she makes this one 8 of 10.

I'm glad SLU didn't just pack it in. I love the we came to play mentality, you have to believe in what you do and go do it. If you lose, you lose. Telling a team like this to pack it in and counter is basically a coach just telling her team, I don't think you're good enough.

Congrats to the ladies on a nice season despite a ton of injuries and adversity. As a fan I'm proud of the growth of this team and what they were able to accomplish

How bad is the A10?  We've dominated there for four years and that domination shows no signs of slipping.   But the next level always seems to dominate us.  Okay, maybe not dominate per se but we go home pretty early (except this year) when this event goes down.

All in all, a successful year considering how it started out.

It’s more about SLU than the league.

SLU was a top 16 National Seed in the NCAA Tourney last season. They advanced  to the round of 32, same as this season. While playing a good Washington team in the Round of 32, SLU lost after 2OT and 4-3 in PK’s. (They lost one of their best players immediately before the NCAA’s to a torn ACL) That’s a bit different than planning for it all summer or season.

This season SLU defeated 17th ranked (23 RPI) Ole Miss 2-1 on the road last week. Ole Miss was the 3rd best SEC Team this year.

Last year, SLU won at Arkansas 3-1. Arkansas was the number 6 National NCAA Seed. SEC Champs. Sweet 16 team. (Arkansas won the SEC again, and is in the Sweet 16 again this season with many of the same players)

SLU also defeated the Big East defending Champ Xavier last season 2-0. (They lost 1-0 this year to Xavier, who won the Big East Title this year) while missing several players for the game.

SLU lost a tough game to a good team that played well. It happens. Rutgers is one of four #1 seeded teams in the NCAA Tourney. SLU is doing fine.

SLU returns much of their roster. They will get some injured players back. They will add some new incoming Freshmen.

Yep. I liked that SLU gave it a go with what they do. It didn’t work out. It happens. Credit to Rutgers. Some of those finishes were highlight reel worthy from distance. And this is still just scratching the surface for SLU for where they are going as a program. It’s pretty fun.

For local Stl people today…First, I encourage anyone that can and has interest to go to the Men’s Soccer game today at home. It’s a lot of fun. There’s nothing like home NCAA Tourney games. Arrive early due to crowd size. (It may be their last home game unless UCLA can win at Duke today, assuming SLU can get the win too)

But if one game isn’t enough for you, or if for some reason you can’t make it to the Men’s game, 5 SLU Women’s Soccer commits and several other SLU Women’s Soccer recruiting targets will be playing today at WWT Soccer Park, as SLSG Navy/Green are hosting KC Athletics and Sporting Blue Valley (KC) at home this weekend. (It’s Missouri Boys High School Soccer Championship Weekend at Soccer Park, so there are several Sunday games today for club ball. Some SLU Men’s recruiting targets were in action this weekend as well) First game today is 9am.

NCAA Women’s Quarterfinals:

Michigan at Florida St.

Santa Clara at Duke

Arkansas at Rutgers

South Carolina at BYU (Sat)

TCU did a nice job making Rutgers play the width of the field after handling the early push. Strong D Mid and Central Mid play as well as outside  backs. Even game 1-1. But Rutgers found a way in the 7th round of PK’s.

NCAA Women’s Division 1 Final Four in Santa Clara, CA:

Florida St. vs Rutgers

Santa Clara vs South Carolina or BYU

The Rutgers/Arkansas game was everything people hoped for and expected. Super fast paced game. A plethora of chances.

Arkansas hit the post in the first 15 seconds of the game on a through ball. And, Rutgers took the lead two minutes later on a Riley Tiernan goal that looked pretty similar to her SLU goals.

Shots were 23 to 22 at the end of regulation. 30-26 for the game for Rutgers. 9-4 corners for Arkansas.2-2 2OT. Rutgers wins it 4-2 in PK’s.
