What was Dayton's seed? I thought they were the 8?

No, they're the 2. Finished 1 game above SLU after SLU lost at Rhode Island to end the regular season (SLU would've had the 2-seed if they had won or Dayton had lost due to the head-to-head tiebreaker).

You may be thinking of the men's side, where Dayton is the 8-seed and comes to SLU this week for the quarterfinals.

Huge props to the camera man on the view of the golden goal and celebration.

Edit: On viewing one of the other angles, it was just a guy with his phone.  Looks professionally done.  Very smart of him to come onto the field and capture the celebration knowing that the game was over.

He is SLU’s Marketing and Fan Engagement Manager.

Both the SLU Men and Women’s teams have people surrounding the field, at different locations, recording, often behind both goals and, on the sidelines in the middle of the field.

Thanks for the clarification Pistol and Courtside. I'm sure I was getting them confused.

2022 SLU commits:

Despite 2 goals from 2022 SLU commit Taylor Krueger, #1 Jesuit (Portland) fell in 2OT 3-2 in the Oregon 6A Round of 16. They were seeking their 4th straight state title. (Krueger is a four year starter) Their loss was only their 2nd in about 80 games. Club ball play next with league play in January.

2022 SLU commit Becca Wolterman, league player of the year, had another big game, recording shutout number 15.5 on the season, helping to lead her team (Badin) to the Ohio Division II Regional Finals (State Quarterfinals). Multiple highlight reel saves, including a breakaway. (Wolterman also helped lead her U17 ECNL club team to the national quarterfinals this summer.) Club ball will have to wait a little longer as her high school run continues.

Multiple SLU recruiting targets remain in the Ohio Regional Finals, including one who is breaking some scoring records.

We recently mentioned Lauren Hiatt’s (2022 SLU commit) high school state semifinal run in Tennessee. Strong season for Lauren bouncing back from injury, on the back line. (She can also play D-Mid) There was a nice local write up for Lauren recently. (The goal referenced was a great individual effort, receiving a backline pass on her own side of the center circle, where she made a run, beat two players and launched a shot far post upper 90 goal from 25 yards.) She’ll begin ECNL club ball later this month for TSC.

SLU 4 Dayton 2

Nine times? Nine times. SLU has now defeated Dayton 9 straight games. Fun atmosphere, important game for recruiting. SLU will play UMass Sunday, for its 4th straight Atlantic 10 Conference Tourney Title, and, its 4th straight NCAA Tourney appearance.

Coming into the game, Dayton had scored at least 3 goals in 8 of their last 10 games since playing SLU last time. They were averaging 18 shots a game in that span. Their offense took a big step forward after playing SLU 10 games ago.

4-2-3-1 for SLU. 3-5-2 for Dayton.

SLU’s pressure sped up the game for Dayton, and, it took away the middle of the field, pinching the wings. SLU opened with Friedrich (SLU’s best defensive attacking player) in the middle, with Kelly on one wing, and Summers on the other. That was supported by Miller and Kohl, who have had a stretch of strong games in the defensive midfield.

1st goal: Emily Gaebe takes a target pass, turns, and beats her defender on a run down the left side, crosses, and SLU gets an own goal to start the game in the first minute.

Dayton tied the game as SLU’s backline pressured 35 yards out. Beach just missed a 50/50 ball. Very smart play down the right wing for Blain, stopping, and reading Huber’s run all alone in the central defense slipping behind Heckel. Some others would have taken that to the end line.

SLU had some other chances, Summers who had a nice game missed a breakaway toe poke just beyond the far post from the left side, as Dayton’s keeper (Dewey) came out to challenge.

SLU took the lead, when Friedrich pressured Dayton’s left back into an errant pass, intercepted by Halverson, who played it to Walsh, to Miller who sent Caroline Kelly in from the side for the finish:

Dayton tied the game just before halftime. A nice combo buildup after a Walsh turnover sends the ball wide for Sheldon. She’s able to get a service that makes it through to the far post. Dayton had 6 players forward and SLU had 6 back. The numbers were there, but Brinkman was forced to defend two players on the far post. Miller was late on the double on Sheldon. Kohl took the top of the box. Houck, Heckel, Brinkman marked other players. Have to match numbers first, play a zone 2nd. Dayton had few chances but finished the ones they had in the first half.

SLU took the lead 5 minutes into the 2nd half when Halverson had a nice give and go with Friedrich, making one of her many runs down the right side, and she crossed for Summers near post for the eventual game winner.

2 minutes later, SLU won a corner. Friedrich’s cross gets cleared straight up into the air near the end line, and, the following clear goes into the net for another Dayton own goal. A couple of fortunate finishes in the game for SLU,, not Dayton’s best game, but SLU has been unlucky often this season. Pressure creates opportunity.

SLU had a few more dangerous chances. Off of a free kick, Friedrich chips it over the wall to Summers who ran onto it on the left side, but her volley goes just over the near post bar. Friedrich a few minutes later, just misses wide far post. She first won the midfield punt up to Kelly, who was defended by two defenders, the ball goes to Friedrich who just misses wide.

SLU:

Puricelli

Halverson, Heckel, Houck, Beach

Miller, Kohl

Kelly, Friedrich, Summers

Gaebe

No Stram, no Sawyer for SLU, as well of course as the players who have been out all year. Beach, who has been less than 100% most of the season, played 82 minutes. Lawler played 12 minutes, She developed a  quad injury several games ago, and of course is coming back from bigger injury last season. This is why you keep recruiting, and why you try to have a 2nd 11.

One thing SLU has a tendency to do is keep Kelly up top at Forward when she scores a goal playing there, even when it isn’t the most effective personnel alignment at other times in the game. Some of the late first half substitution patterns were less effective for SLU. And, one has to be aware to not play the score or clock.

Dayton almost cut it to one from 25 yards out, but a good strike from distance went just over the bar with 19 minutes left in the game. They also had a nice flicked on header behind the defense late, but couldn’t finish.

There’s a good crowd for the championship game today. Bills are up 1-0. You can probably hear my kids doing ninja warrior on the espn+ broadcast.

Just beat me to the update.

Great job by the ref to play on. Kelly was clearly being held but he gave her the chance to fight through and make a play and she did. It didn’t directly result in the goal but it started the sequence.

UMass ties it up about 8 min into the 2nd half. One of the very few times in 2 years I think Purcelli misplayed a ball. She should have been about 3 yards off the line and stayed home giving the defender a chance to make a play.

5 ish min later SLU goes back on top with a fantastic corner by HF and a great header finish by Hoeckel (sp).

Another 5 ish minutes and SLU makes it 3-1 with a great play by Brianna H carrying the ball through traffic laying it off to the right for a shot by ? Gaebe on the rebound for the goal. UMass and the announcers seemed to think Gaebe was off on the shot, they were wrong.

4-1 SLU on another great corner serve by HF and a nice header by Abbie Miller.

A fantastic 2nd half by SLU to make it 4 straight NCAA tournament appearances.

The ladies have faced a lot of adversity this year with injuries and early season disciplinary suspensions, but they look to be really finding their groove.

I thought Caroline Kelly really stood out today consistently creating dangerous chances including the 1st goal.

HF just consistently hits corners with amazing precision. She’s absolutely money on set pieces.
