SLU commit Emily Gaebe will be playing in the 37th annual MAC Senior All Star game tonight. She was named Missouri Class 3 First Team All State this week.

2022 SLU commit Hannah Smith (Eureka, SLSG) was named First Team All State. And, 2021 SLU commit Madelyn Smith was named All State for Illinois Class 1.

A few hundred teams will be playing beginning next weekend in the U13-U-19 USYS Midwest Regionals hosted by St. Louis. St. Louis is one of four national region hosts. Nationals will be held in a month at Lakewood Ranch, FL. (Bradenton-Sarasota).

Separately, ECNL U13-U19 National Playoffs will begin a week after that, also in Lakewood Ranch, FL. And the semis and finals will take place after that in Richmond, VA.

Local notables in soccer. Lafayette (SLSG) Junior Forward Rylee Howard (Wisconsin commit) was named Missouri Gatorade Player of The Year.

Separate award, St. Dominic’s Junior Grace Bindbeutel, a former Missouri Gatorade Player of the Year (Oklahoma St. commit) was named Missouri Class 4 Player of The Year. Howard was named Offensive Player of The Year. Some other locals with extra recognition included Katy Fitzler, Sophia Cross (Miami OH) Brooke Cattoor, Raena Childers (Kansas), Maddie Helling (Indian State), Sarah Bozeman (Memphis), Emi Pope (MIT).

Mackenzie, “Mack” or “Z” was First Team All State and a Captain for Nerinx Hall. She’s 6 foot, strong, skilled, fit player, high work rate, who covers a lot of ground all over the field out of the defensive midfield. She has also played center back. She is not afraid of contact, doesn’t hesitate, which can be an initial challenge for some other players at that level. She has power in her game.

She takes up a lot of space in the box on both offense and defense. Dangerous on set pieces. She is a threat both aerially and at her feet there. Ball winner. Part of a PK shot selection group when applicable. She had a strong post season as a two way player two different postseasons. She has an ability to score big goals and play well in big moments. She is best as a defensive midfielder or back line player that can move up situationally.

She plays ECNL club soccer for SLSG. Nationals are coming up soon. That team includes 7 SEC Conference commits, as well as 2 ACC commits, 2 Big Ten commits, and several other D-1 commits. It doesn’t include a SLU commit but the years before and after include some. Point being she gets to practice regularly with some pretty good players, as well as their ECNL competition Nationally which has helped her game.

When you first see her play soccer, you will immediately notice her height and size because it is less common at that level. She’s a giant compared to some players at this level. Then you will quickly notice she can play soccer at a high level. Technically, cerebrally, very high work rate, (this is key) and movement.

When she gets to the ACC, she will find out that there are lots of other good to great players, some of which can match her size and skill set at that level. But she will do fine, and adjust, and she likely will keep raising her level. There are plenty of fast, technically strong players that can attack the defense directly 1v1 with pace at her next level. She isn’t a Hailey Hopkins (Vandy) type of 6 foot player that SLU has faced before. Hopkins (an All American) is roughly similar in size, and they have some similar skill sets, but Hopkins is more of an up top finishing forward first, as a target or in space, than Duff. Duff works from the back first.

For fun she also plays basketball which is the sport of her dad and brother. (Her mom played soccer) She is probably a more polished, natural hooper. She is the all time leading scorer at Nerinx Hall for basketball, almost 1500 points. She likes both sports. SLU Women’s Soccer btw recruits a lot of multi sports athletes

Other than multi day/week training workouts for club soccer prior to Nationals, tonight’s all star game would be another chance to see her play before she leaves for Clemson. (NCAA Quarterfinalist this year) Let’s get a SLU game vs Clemson. She chose Clemson over a few schools from the SEC, Big 12, and SLU. (SLU recruited her) She liked her visit at Clemson and she received an offer soon after that was too tough to turn down. Obviously the ACC is as good as it gets in Women’s Soccer. Competition will be strong. There’s always room for improvement technically, on the ball, speed, etc…so she'll need to keep working on those areas.

I would have to find some video, but here are a few photos where you can see her size and presence while playing.

Some have asked me about recruiting information and opportunities to see SLU commits and SLU recruiting targets play, both locally and nationally. It’s a busy time for SLU coaches and recruiting. Lots of good opportunities going on both locally, and Nationally. 2023/2024 recruiting has picked up a lot while SLU finishes off 2022 recruiting as well.

For those in the Stl, there is a good opportunity the next few days, beginning today.

Top 2023 recruiting target Ashley Koch and KC Athletics are in town playing Thursday WWT Soccer Park 4pm Field #5. Friday WWT Soccer Park 10am Field #5. She’s joined by fellow target Mimi Hallier and a few other teammates. (SLU players Soohia Stram, Caroline Kelly and Lily Ellis, played with KC Athletics)

These games are part of the SLSG College ID Camp matchups with KC Athletics and FC Pride (Indianapolis.) These are games to prep for upcoming ECNL Nationals which begin next week in Florida.

2022 SLU commit Hannah Smith will be playing as well. Friday 2pm Field #1 and Sunday Noon Collinsville Field #3.

10 games today. 10 tomorrow. 3 each Saturday and Sunday. U14-U19. All Thursday/Friday games are at WWT. All Sat/Sun games are in Collinsville.

Others to watch while there…

Metro East IL (O’Fallon, Triad, Althoff) won all 3 State Titles this year over Chicago schools. SLU commit Madelyn Smith’s team lost 3-2 in the 1A State Quarters to the eventual State Champ. Laney Harshany, 2023 SLU target. She is coming off a dream IL Class 2 playoffs, helping Triad (Sydney Beach) to the IL Class 2 State Title with the game winning assist in both the quarters and finals, and a 30 yard screamer game winning goal in the semis. …2024 Keeper Taylor Gardner and a few of her teammates.

SLSG will have teams in each age group competing in the top level of U13-U19 at ECNL Nationals. (There are roughly 5 divisions/tiers) KC Athletics, FC Pride, have different teams in different brackets and tiers advancing as well.

U18/19 team is in the Final 16.

U17 team is in the Final 32

U16 is in the Final 32

U15 has multiple teams advancing.

U14 is in the Final 32.

U 13 team is in the Final 16.

SLU commit Taylor Krueger’s Crossfire United team is playing in the 16 team National Finals in the U18/19. SLU commit Lauren Hiatt’s Tennessee Soccer Club team will be playing in the U17 Final 32.

Several SLU targets from 04/05/06 Ohio Elite, FC Alliance, Richmond United, Michigan Hawks, Internationals, KC Athletics, SLSG, other will be playing.

………………………………………………………..

Separately, the USYS boys and girls regionals will take place in 4 regions including St. Louis. There are some good teams and players from LFA, Sporting Stl etc taking part, including some SLU recruiting targets. The U13 and U14 LFA teams have already qualified  for Girls Academy Nationals, as have the U16 and U19 Sporting Blue Valley teams. (SLU commit Katelyn Brinkman) As some may recall, LFA 02/03 team won the U16’s National Title a few years ago and later went undefeated again advancing to Nationals on a goal by SLU commit Emily Gaebe.

The U13 and U14 LFA Girls Academy Teams are playing this week in the Final 16 team playoffs in Oceanside, CA.

LFA Girls Academy 05 will play Sat, Sun, Mon in Oceanside, CA Showcase.

LFA 03/04 will play Friday at 3:30pm Pacific and Saturday 3:30pm Pacific for those interested in watching SLU commit Ellie Paloucek, etc..

A few SLU commits and targets teams will be playing in Oceanside, CA as well.

LFA 05 with multiple SLU targets (Taylor Babb etc..) is playing in Stl this weekend in the USYS Regionals. SLU was recently out at their ID Camp.

Sporting St. Louis 04, 3 time MO Cup Champions will be also be playing in the St. Louis USYS Regionals.

The other 3 region hosts are NJ, SC, ID.

The Girls Academy games in California  can also be viewed online. ECNL games in Florida are also often available online.

That’s enough to get people started.

SLU’s first 2023 commit is Macy Lutz, Defender/Center Back, from Michigan Hawks ECNL. (She’s from Toledo, OH)

Her club team will be playing in the ECNL Champions League National Final 32 in Florida next week. (SLU also has some other 2023 recruiting targets from a few teams in this bracket)

(Her older sister Mackenzie has started almost every game the past few seasons as a defender at Dayton.)

I hope you are right, but first we need to win at least one game in the tournament.

Women's Soccer 2021 fall schedule is up on slubillikens.com under composite schedule starting August 2021

5 Power 5/Big East games on the non-conference schedule for SLU. This includes games against teams in 4 of the 6 Power 5/Big East leagues. The big non-conference games are all stacked early as has been the case in the past. The A-10 has not been helpful with scheduling, breaking up a few of these games, mixing some in later in the season during league play. That needs to change.

1) Xavier.

Xavier is a return game from the past year’s neutral site, indoor win over them during the pandemic. Xavier was down a little bit this past year but they will be better next season. They won the Big East Title two years ago, too 25 team. Good coach that arrived 2017.

Chloe Netzel will be a Freshman at Xavier. She is a Hannah Larson type of player. Big time scorer, motor, etc…played club ball with incoming SLU recruits Madelyn Smith, Emily Gaebe, and 2022 Ellie Paloucek, scoring big goals in their National Title run.

Xavier has often recruited St. Louis, but they have been getting better players in recent years. Hayley Jakovich is a nice defender from Eureka, SLSG, Emily Burton, an SJA/SLSG experienced midfielder, and, Grace Bauer MF Belleville East/SLSG. I would expect to see all of them start and play a lot. Fun game. SLU in return recruits Ohio a lot as well. Big East will have Georgetown who is elite annually, Butler, Marquette, a few others, so I would expect this to be a better RPII game this year.

Xavier recruits Ohio, KY, Chicago, Michigan, Indiana, NC, Stl, as their base.

2) Iowa.

Iowa had a unique season this year. It was not a good season. But they had a dream run in the Big Ten Tourney, winning it, and, playing well while losing early in NCAA’s. They are getting a new soccer building for those that want to see other facilities.

For Iowa, Samantha Cary is a very good defender, from Francis Howell North, SLSG. Top 30 Freshman a few years ago. Iowa is playing 4 Power 5/Big East teams this year in addition to their Power 5 league schedule. Hopefully they can get a few more wins this year (except vs SLU) to help that power rating.

3) Kansas.

Familiar foe here. KU recently came into St. Louis a few weeks ago, and spent a day each with SLSG and LFA club teams with full staff giving clinics.   They overlap SLU in recruiting geographies and targets sometimes.

Raena Childers will be a high profile incoming recruit that made the State Semis recently. Very talented MF player from Grain Valley. She joins her older sister Rylan on their team. Rylan transferred from UMKC after having big success there. Immediately started for KU.

Prior to COVID-19, KU had made 4 of 6 NCAA’s a few Sweet 16’s, 9 trips in recent memory, and of course a tough win over SLU in the NCAA’s. Not sure of their non-conference schedule yet but this is a good matchup for SLU and a team it needs to beat regionally. Often a top 25 team, knocked on the top 10 door a couple of years ago.

4) Louisville.

Louisville had made two straight NCAA’s prior to this past season. Top 25. Play in the very tough ACC. But they are mostly competitive, making a few NCAA’s here and there, closely missing some others. They played several of the national power teams very close. 1-0 L at FSU this past year, UNC was a competitive game etc..

5) Purdue, again, Power 5 team that hasn’t had much success yet under Drew Roff. He was very successful at (often SLU opponent) Illinois State. Dominated the league over 7 years several NCAA 2nd rounds etc…it is his 6th year at Purdue. This would be similar to playing Iowa, a bottom tier Power 5 team, good name opponent but need to win the game.

Evansville, Missouri St., Illinois State, SIUE all had several local Stl players with more new players coming in the next few years. SIUE was an NCAA Tourney team winning the OVC and had about 16 Stl players on their team. MSU had about 8, 3 each for the others. So those will be fun games to play for the teams.

This schedule lacks perhaps the one or two top 10 jump off of the page opponents. But is has a lot of Power 5/Bug East depth. It’s very travel friendly too. From a soccer standpoint, SLU fits well with the Big East Conference. So hopefully those games vs various Big East Schools continue.

SLU has added Goal Keeper Transfer Natalie Phelps. She spent her Freshman season st Illinois. (Lafayette, SLSG). She played club ball with Grafie English, Katie Houck, Anna Lawler’s sister, etc…

SLU is also actively recruiting several 2023/2024 Keepers in the next cycle of recruiting.

(Illinois has added former local standout Sydney Stephens, who transferred from Georgia. She’s been having a strong summer ball season playing with several current SLU players)

-is Phelps competition for Puricelli who as a frosh played all but 18 minutes in a 1600 minute season? were they teammates at SLSG?

Depth. Puricelli is the starter. But it is good to add an additional keeper who will play some of the time when needed. Previously, Kasey Hartmann (who graduated in the Spring) was going to be back next year, but she is not.

Phelps played on the team one year behind Puricelli at SLSG. But many of the different players and teams in their club system practice and play with and against one another.

What happened to Bry McCarthy.  Where did she go?  Adding OS, as an asst coach for goalies seems like a win, except she was already there as a Volunteer Asst Coach.

I was surprised to read Courtside's comment that we are recruiting a 2023 recruiiting-class goalie since we will have 3 on the roster already, next year, with one of them likely redshirting.

Bry worked through SLU’s summer camp/ID camp. She’s been working with LFA Girls Academy League high school age teams. Now you have Girls Academy, ECNL, USYS as three paths for girls. (The USYS Midwest Regionals were recently completed in St. Louis)

Former SLU assistant Ralph Richards has been SLSG Girls ECNL Director for most of the past decade, and, he coaches U15-U-19 teams.Their National Playoffs are going on right now in Florida, as well as later this month. So hundreds and hundreds of college coaches flew to California and from there, to Florida, including SLU.

SLU recruits heavily from both club programs (as well as others locally and Nationally)

The U14 and U13 LFA Academy teams made both the National Finals, and, the National Semifinals respectfully ,in Oceanside, (San Diego) CA this past week.

2022 SLU commit Ellie Paloucek plays for LFA Academy 03/04.

With regards to recruiting a keeper, Puricelli graduates in 2024. It makes sense for SLU to be taking a look at 2023 and 2024 high school classes.

Courtside, your answer about recruiting GK's makes sense.  I am certainly not the expert on soccer and soccer recruiting that you are, but I've seen Paloucek, Howard (? from Lafayette) and the St Dom twin forwards numerous times, and I think the four of them are in the same grouping, skillwise.  While I wish we had gotten 2-3 of the 4, I am happy with Paloucek.  She is really fast and has a powerful shot.  I look for her to contribute immediately once she gets here.

BTW, Duff from Nerinx is in the same skill grouping, but plays more of a defensive role and, of course, is one year ahead of the other 4.  I understand that Katie worked really hard to get Duff, who I see as the best '21 recruit coming out of St Louis this year, but she wanted to go away and getting the offer from Clemson in the ACC shows just how good she can be.

I’d say the same for basketball recruiting when it comes to age/year. If you have a star player at a position as a Senior, you need to have a Freshman or incoming Freshman ready to go, as well as transfers etc…to take over when that one leaves. It’s not a surprise as Puricelli will be either a Senior or will have graduated when the next 4 year type of Keeper starts at SLU. They are looking at many 2023 and 2024 Keepers. It isn’t unusual. Many are from out of town. Although there are a couple of very good local ones too. It comes down, to evaluating, mutual interest, building a relationship, and closing. You need all of those things at every position.

For now SLU has Puricelli, Phelps, and, Ellis from KC, and that is a good mix for a while.

With recruiting, SLU leaves no stone unturned. They work inside out. They have built relationships in key markets amongst various programs. They target specific players early, and they gauge mutual interest. It isn’t a super wide net. Some kids want a better conference, a bigger school, different atmosphere, or want to go away, all kinds of things. Many will continue want and do that forever. That’s okay. Some others have more of an initial interest in SLU, and/or an openness to SLU, locally, regionally, nationally. That allows SLU to better focus their time and resources on those players. There are no must have one player(s). You can find and get another, especially if you win, are good at evaluating and building relationships, etc…There are also some players where you have to wait and see if they develop enough to offer as well, it they aren’t quite at that level yet.

One of top 2023 targets, was named a State Forward of the Year as a Sophomore. She scored the game winner for her U16 club team in Florida yesterday,  in their playoffs. SLU has built a long term mutual relationship, identified  and evaluated and all of those things mentioned above, getting in early. There’s competition, but, SLU is in very good position. We’ll see. She also has a few pretty good teammates with too, as their team is one of the better in their age group. These are Larson, Paloucek, etc type of players and recruits. There are some players considering SLU nowadays that would not have done so years ago.

SLU doesn’t have to get all of the top local players or many or most. But they need to be competitive, get some, and they are doing that more and more. They will never get them all. And, that’s okay. Part of recruiting is taking a good but lesser recruited player for various reasons, and developing them to be as good and better than some of those more highly recruited players. That’s fun too. SLU has done that. Madelyn Smith, Emily Gaebe, etc…can play the game at a high level.

And, some years have more top players than others or more depth or more this or that. The same can be said for club or high school teams.

You mentioned some players. Many of them happen to play on the same U18/U19 club team. It’s a pretty stacked team. Their U15’s are also pretty stacked. SLU has a commit from one of their U17 players, perhaps not as good of a team, but still good, and, with recruiting, it’s about finding an individual player regardless of their team. Anyway, that U18/19 team has zero SLU commits. But SLU is getting a few other local players that can play from elsewhere in that recruiting class. SLU will do just fine.

One local 2023 SLU recruiting target, perhaps an under recruited player, keeps scoring big goals in big games, including high school, and club ball this summer. We’ll see how that develops.

For me, there is always value analyzing all of the commits, how did they come about, even if they weren’t to SLU. Some are high level recruits. Some are over recruited. And, some are under recruited. And how do they compare with others out there Nationally? So, using your example, The U18/19 SLSG ECNL team made the Quarterfinals in the ECNL National Championship. (They fell 3-2 to Charlotte.) They defeated the top seed SoCal Blues, one of the country’s top club teams. Here’s a list of some of the school’s involved in the game:

SLSG: Oklahoma St., South Carolina, Wisconsin (2), Mississippi St. (2), Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Mizzou. SIUE, and several others. They were missing their North Carolina and Clemson commits.

SoCal Blues: Santa Clara, Cal, Oregon, UCLA, Washington, TCU, Georgetown, Arkansas, Penn St. Colorado, USC, Washington St., BYU, Pepperdine, St. Mary’s, UCSB, USF, etc…

The game was a hard fought, physical 1-1 draw. SLSG won in the 11th round of PK’s.

This was one of their goals, an assist from the current Missouri State Gatorade Player of the Year, (Rylee Howard, Wisconsin) to the previous Missouri State Gatorade Player of the year. (Grace Bindbeutel, Oklahoma State) (It’s worth a look. It’s a really nice goal)

https://twitter.com/theecnl/status/1410747401699160068?s=21

The point is these two are some of those in that elite level Power 5/Big East recruiting category. SLU is getting/mixing in more of these types of players. It requires getting in early, gauging mutual interest before some of those big schools get in there. Then it’s a battle. SLU has been putting in a lot of work for a lot of years to get to this point. Progress has been made and is still being made. But many will still go elsewhere. That’s okay. Good for them. Good luck to them. It still helps SLU when the local areas have high level recruits, high level teams annually. And, as SLU has shown, a few might return as well. SLU will continue to go into other geographies and get players from more and more places as well.

I wish the A-10 could develop an East Coast version of the WCC in Women’s Soccer. There’s plenty of talent in the recruiting regions in the A-10. The league has not been helpful enough from a program standpoint, administrative standpoint etc…as previously mentioned, SLU has a profile that better fits the Big East in Women’s soccer. But they are where they are, and they can be a top 20 program regardless of league. It’s just another challenge.

Recruiting is a mix. I often go back to the Hannah Friedrich example. She was named top 30 it so player nationally after this past year in a year end ranking. She played at a not so soccer power Hazelwood West, and while good, not the elite of elites at AFA Fillies. But she can play. And she has gotten better every year.

Courtside, again thanks for all the info and logic you bring to this Board.  I find your insight into the who's, why's and wherefore's of local and national recruiting to be truly outstanding---you gotta be Chris Allen or Mr. Soccer (Bill McDermott) to have the knowledge contained in your posts and if you aren't, then they could both learn from you!  ⚽

SLU received a commitment from Ashley Koch (2023). High level player and recruit. Can play up top, in the central attacking midfield, or, on the wing. Good finisher and can take on defenders 1v1. Strong technical ability, and on ball skills. Good work rate. She was the Kansas Class 6A Forward of the Year as a Sophomore. (Shawnee Mission East, state runner up) Plays club ball with KC Athletics. (formerly Sporting Blue Valley) Her U16 KC Athletics team finished 9th Nationally in the ECNL. Current SLU players from KC Athletics include Sophia Stram, Caroline Kelly, Lily Ellis.

And Ashley has now tweeted it out this afternoon. Big get for SLU. She was also recruited by Power 5 teams in the Big East, BigTen, Big 12.  Identifying good players, getting in early, building relationships, finding a strong mutual fit, getting a commitment.

I'm very interested in what this program will be able to do in the next few years.  They are now 2nd to men's basketball as far as my interest level.  I think that the women's soccer team is our closest opportunity, at the moment, we have for a national championship.

Sunmer run.

Nice little Thursday for Billiken Emily Groark in Suburban Chicago.

SLSG U23 gets the 2-0 UWS playoff win at previously undefeated Chicago Mustangs in suburban Chicago.

Groark scored the game winner, and, she made a nice individual 1v1 effort on the left wing end line later, to assist the diving header insurance tally.

Groark and Katie Houck were the 2 of the 7 Billiken team members that made the trip for SLSG.

SLU received a 2023 commitment from MF/F Jordan Gary.

Jordan plays club soccer with SLSG ECNL (IL, and MO) and she attends Collinsville High School. She was one of 18 players Nationally selected across the country to represent the United States in the Nike ID2 Olympic Development International friendlies last year vs English Academies in England. (Trip was postponed due to COVID-19)

The year prior she played on a Midwest All Star Team selected to play in the International Cup Futures with and against some of the World’s best 15 year olds.

Most recently she played with the SLSG MO U16’s at ECNL Nationals.

She is front row, first from the left in the photo.

So, and correct me if I’m wrong @courtside, but I believe what you’re trying to say is: “she’s good”.

😂🤣😂 Coach Shields continues to impress. Awesome!
