VCU just tied #4 Marshall tonight.  I feel like we are a distant 3rd place right now in A10 at best.

Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? No!!! It wasn’t over then and it’s not over now!

2-1 homecoming win against LaSalle. Minor skirmish at the end of the game with #2 from Explorers on the ground acting like he got shot. Soccer…

That was not a very good LaSalle team that nearly beat us.   Seems like we were exposed at Akron.   I guess to goals is nice, certainly more than our usual output.

If something isn’t working you have to try something else. Poise and efficiency in and near the 18, and, individuals making a play.

It took a long time, but SLU finally switched from a 4-2-3-1 that was less effective, to a 4-4-2 with 2 forwards and no central attacking midfielder. And then they scored. SLU effectively reversed fields with pace. Leatherman made a run taking the space. He then played Pare in space. Pare cut it back for Schramm. Quick settle, poise, far netting. it works because the central forwards occupied the center backs and outside back.

Theo Franca is a  physical Freshman forward talent. He made a play on a diagonal ball from Jaeger.

4-2-3-1 and 4-4-2 for SLU.

4-3-3 for LaSalle.

4472 in attendance.

RPI 19.

From the Fordham press release regarding their 5-1 thrashing of VCU.  Wow.

  • Bronx, N.Y. – On the birthday of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), who were formally approved by Pope Paul III on this date in 1540, the Fordham men's soccer team took the Jesuit ideal of being a man for others to the extreme with four different players not only scoring but also recording an assist in a 5-1 Atlantic 10 win over VCU at Moglia Stadium

Yeah, that's some real "God on our side" stuff that is.

Does anyone have any explanation as to why the ref did not review the handball in LaSalle's box in the first half of the game on Saturday?  Is there some rule that dictates when to review and when not to review, or is it just a judgment call by the ref?  Seemed like a horribly missed call.

Soccer is a little out of my league but it looked to me like the the key moment in the the LaSalle game on Sat was near the end.

With 2 min and 5 sec left in the game , SLU was winning (2-1) when the ref awarded LaS a penalty kick. For the uninitiated (like myself) here is a breakdown of the play. The LaS player is 36 ft from the goal in the middle of the field. He is facing the SLU goalie Grad Student Jermi Abonnel (6 ft tall)....The goal is 8 ft tall and 24 FEET LONG. There is nobody between him and the goal. Time out here for some background.  We have just sat through 88 min of laborious play...victory is so close and now it looks like the win will be snatched away.  There are whisperings  in the crowd about the curse.  Some in the crowd are holding their breath ....some head to the garage to get a quick start on the traffic(don't you just love these fans)  A hush comes over the crowd. The LaS player fires  a rising rocket shot  headed for the corner area of the goal....When all of sudden in a burst Abonnell  explodes and goes flying through the air for a miraculous save ....The crowd goes wild...people come running back from the garage to see why soccer fans are going wild. And SLU goes onto win the game. And a pissed LaS  team starts a brawl at the final buzzer.

It ain't basketball but it was a fun time.

SLU 2 VCU 0

SLU made a shift a few games ago to a 4-4-2 from a 4-2-3-1, and it has generated more forward combination play and more scoring chances. It pairs to forwards together instead of 1. And it removes the central attacking midfielder.  This is how SLU playwd when they had Becher and Klein together.

For SLU this is playing Anderson and Franca together. Sometimes Delkus.  Sellers has been out several games as a midfielder, and this also moves DiMaria to the bench sometimes as well.

In some games and with a lead, SLU will go back to the previous formation. And they did that vs VCU. It drops a midfielder behind the central forward.

Prior to pairing forwards, SLU moved Pare to a central attacking midfield position. They have since moved him back out wide. Forced a turnover and scored a transition goal. Heckenlaible has been a left wing mainstay this season. Created the foul set piece. Henry service to Fournier for the first goal. many other chances.

VCU is a good RPI opponent, so, the result moved SLU from 33 to 24 temporarily, pending other games.

Remaining games are vs 1 good RPI team (Fordham), 1 non D1 no RPI, and two sub 100. RPI’s. SLU will be playing Fordham next Saturday at home, for first place in the A10. 3 big league games left.

We’ll just watched last nights game.  That was nuts.  Nearly 2 hour delayed start.  First half was played in constant downpour.  Bills fell behind 2-0 against Fordham, who has only given up multiple goals only twice this year.  Fordham committed a handball that was inexplicably overturned  but then SLU got a goal before halftime.  Abonnel made an incredible save on a Fordham PK, then SLU dominated the 2nd half, scored twice and won.   Whoever was there and stayed for the end of that one, BRAVO!   Conclusion huge win puts us in first place.  I dislike VAR and that official really couldn’t ever get control of the game.  I REALLY dislike Fordham and am thrilled those creeps lost.

I was at the City game last night, looks like I made the wrong choice, although in my defense my seat was under the overhang, so I was out of the rain. Not an option at Hermann.

I did see a notice on the City website saying that St Louis City SC Academy player Thomas DiMaria was called up to the US U-15 Boys National Team Domestic Training Camp, so there are still DiMaria’s for SLU to recruit.

We also are now at 16 pts in first alone in the conference standings, with a game in hand over the next 3 closest teams. 2 points in our next 2 games wraps up the regular season conference championship, and we play Loy-Chi on the road (they are tied for 9th with 6 points) and Rhodey at home (in 8th place with 7 points).  One win or 2 ties does the trick.

That was Fordham's first conference road defeat since Oct 2023.

SLU has found something since switching to playing two forwards together as 9’s. They have scored at least 2 goals in 4 of their last 5 games playing it. And the 5th was the early red card game where SLU had to play a 5-3-2 a player down.

Injuries and position depth have been factors that contribute to it as well.

They want to keep Heckenlaible wide even though he played up top last year. They tried Pare as a cam in the middle. But he has been more effective wide. So they are keeping Delkus and DiMaria as the 3rd and 4th forwards. It’s a learning curve for Jack because he is a midfielder, not a forward. And SLU adjusts accordingly in certain game situations to a 4-2-3-1.

Another good opportunistic experienced opponent, force turnovers and transition to finish chances.

Fordham was a 4-4-2 as well and they play often through D’Ippolito. 9 returning players from last year’s game. Several familiar faces but a new formation. Same counter transition style. Same rotating attackers.

SLU is now 14 in RPI with 2 (not great) RPI regular season games remaining. SLU has played 6 RPI top 50 non-conference opponents. Very strong top 10 schedule this year.

Mirolslav Levkosky was also called up to U15 San Diego Camp. Ryan Cloninger also received a recent call up.

Sam Anderson, Eddie Niles, Blake Wilson Sam Harris, are all recent USYNT call ups from STL.

Kane Kraus, Owen Jorgensen Lorenzo Cornelius, have also been  local USYNT call ups this year.

In the past SLU recruited Khi Joyner, Tyson Pearce, etc..

7 different STL players have received recent Women’s USYNT call ups as well.

Men’s Soccer recruiting and Women’s Soccer recruiting are two very different things. Apples to oranges.
