Tuesday, 8am Creve Coeur Park Soccer Complex, Field 1,  Regional Semifinals vs Chicago Galaxy. Multiple SLU soccer commits playing.

They won their pool play bracket over Minneapolis United, Chicago Magic, Nebraska FC by a combined score of 14-2. The next one will likely be much closer.

Good opportunity to see 2021 SLU commit Seth Anderson, a big time goal scorer, SLU commit defender Brogan Townsend, and SLU commit, defender Donny Ross.

The bad news is the SLSG 02 team lost for the first time in its last 37 games. The good news is they still qualified for the National Semifinals later in July in Florida after going undefeated in league play. After dominating pool play and winning in knock out play, the team fell 3-2 in OT to Chicago FC United. Both Seth (SLU commit) and Tanner (2023 SLU recruiting target playing up) Anderson scored for SLU. SLU commits Donny Ross and Brogan Townsend also on the team) Ross has been used as an i side left back, Townsend outside back, and Anderson(s) in the attacking midfield.

anyone going to USMNT vs Canada in KC on Sunday?

I just got my tickets.

If I was still in STL I would’ve tried to go. Have they released stadiums/dates for WC Qualifying yet?

Nice Summer run for some incoming Billikens.

U19 SLSG completed group play undefeated, with a 3-1 win over Dallas Solar. (Tanner Anderson with a goal.)

Despite many chances and controlling the run of play, U19’s fall 2-1 to Miami Strikers in the USYS National Semifinals. (own goal after a Seth Anderson cross) Good efforts from Seth Anderson, Donny Ross, and, earlier from Brogan Townsend.

SLU Men open their season Sunday August 15th with a home  exhibition vs Wisconsin, 7pm.

Sure.

SLU is losing Keaton Schieffer to graduation. (Schieffer is in grad school at Parks) among a few others. And there are always going to be a few transfers both in and out, (some seeking more time and others overplaying their recruitment) as well as incoming Freshmen.

SLU returns 9 players that played a lot of minutes. (Becher, Klein, Leeth, Buendia, Murana, Niece, Vaughn, Keller, Schulte)

AJ Palazzolo will play often as an incoming transfer from Indiana that will help in the defensive midfield and backline. Returning Daniel Moore will compete for a lot of time in back. And there are some very good incoming MF/D players that will push for time.

It will be interesting to see newcomers Parker, Anderson, Olson, Komodi, push for time upfront and the attacking midfield, along with returning players Rowan, Johnson, Bruch, Alwang, Legut. Need a bit more in the finishing 3rd.

Buendia had a really good season last year after his redshirt season. Becher has had a really strong U23 summer season as has Klein.

SLU didn’t score enough on the road this past season. Getting early goals finishing better in the final third is what can separate them this season.

A lot returns, good depth at many positions. Schulte is as good as ever, and he has a couple of new keepers behind him for depth.

Stefan Stojanovich transferred to Georgetown where they believe he can better fit their system.

Expectations will be high for NCAA’s. Should be fun.

SLU is the 6th team receiving votes outside of the top 25 in the United Soccer Coaches Pre-Season Poll.

Hertha Berlin hired Vedas Ibisevic as an offensive coach to work with attacking players. He’ll work with both professional players and youth academy players.

SLU Men’s Soccer began training this week. They open exhibition play at Wisconsin Sunday. Lots of good returning players and lots of good new additions.  Big expectations this year to win the league and league tourney titles. We’ll see.

This week, as some may have seen, St. Louis City SC released their new Academy 17’s and 16’s initial fall rosters. Lots of familiar faces among them. Many have experience with several local club teams.

Not a bad time for a quick reminder of the changing landscape, and, how it affects SLU’s recruiting.

1) MLS Next. This is idealistically the preferred pre-professional route. There are now 2 local MLS Next Academy programs.

St. Louis CITY SC, and St. Louis FC. (which is an SLSG program) Both have MLS Next programs. This past season, St. Louis FC qualified for the National Playoffs in Dallas, in 19’s, 17’s, and 16’s age groups. St. Louis CITY Academy begins play this fall.

Players on these teams do not play high school ball. Some go directly to a professional path. Some still go to college first. Just this past week two St. Louis FC players committed to Indiana and Akron. SLU had Patrick Weah this past season briefly, before he signed with Minnesota professionally this past year.

Beyond Academy teams, SLSG has moved its non Academy team Elite program to ECNL (Elite Club National League) for this fall. Their non-St. Louis teams competed in it this past season. ECNL was originally started over a decade ago for girls who felt undeserved and under prioritized under the past system. ECNL has been a big success for girls, and it has been a preferred place for college coaches and college recruiting. SLSG is moving their “Elite” teams to ECNL. SLSG hosted this year’s ECNL Boys National Championships. Previously they were USYS, (United States Youth Soccer) and, their 19’s (with several SLU recruits) almost won the USYS National Championship. (Lost in National Semifinals). Other local club teams will continue to play USYS.

Good opportunity this weekend for many familiar and new players to get some run prior to the regular season.

SLU 1 Wisconsin 1 Final (predetermined 120 minute game to get more players some playing time) (Olson from Bruch on SLU’s goal in extra time. Wisconsin tied it just before 120 minute mark) Olson’s roomie Donny Ross getting some productive back line minutes

Wisconsin has had some good local area players in recent memory, Mark Segbers, Tommy Barlow, Nick Jones, Brian Hail, AJ Cochran etc…but it’s been a couple of years since they have had any. They have mostly Wisconsin, Chicago, a few Internationals, and a few Californians. (More recently, Wisconsin has been aggressively recruiting some of the best local Stl area Women’s players. A few big commits and a half a dozen or so more attended one of their summer ID camps this year)

Big game for Billiken Chris Bruch, a Wisconsin transfer. Set up SLU’s goal, had a lot of run.

SLU returns 10 of 11 starters and played most of them for the first half of the 120 minutes.

SLU has needed both more team depth, and, finishing, in the final third, on the road. This year’s team can sub in a 2nd 11 for the first 11 without a drop off. And, it will make a difference. SLU has faded late in games the past few years after strong starts to the seasons.

Seth Anderson, Isaiah Parker, Dylan Olson, are 3 finishing Freshmen that can take on defenders 1v1 with pace. This will help Becher, Klein, Buendia, etc…make SLU more dangerous offensively.

One more exhibition vs Missouri St. Saturday. Season begins following Thursday vs Louisville.

2nd and final exhibition for SLU at home tonight vs Missouri St.

The MSU Bears are coming off of another strong season, winning the MVC and defeating Maryland in the NCAA Tourney, advancing to the Sweet 16. They are 37-4-2 the past three seasons. They are a top 15 National team.

They do it with lots and lots of International players. (23 from 8 different countries) Solid keeper from St. Louis, a nice midfielder from Atlanta. Kyle Hiebert (D, Manitoba, Canada) and Dolling (M, Liverpool, England) preseason All Americans. So it will be another good preseason exhibition matchup for SLU.

SLU will play lots of players as it gets ready for its opener next week vs Louisville. Deepest team SLU has had in a while. Preseason all conference for SLU: Becher, Buendia, Klein, Keller.

Opening night vs Louisville for SLU Thursday, and, it will be a fun matchup.

John Michael Hayden is trying to get Louisville back to their NCAA Elite 8 ways. (3 in 4 years while he was an assistant under 13 year head coach Ken Lolla. Lolla stepped down a few seasons ago after great success.) Similar to Lolla (an All American player at Duke from NJ), Hayden was also a decorated two time National National Champion at Indiana.

Louisville is going to play a lot of first and second year players with a few exceptions. And they will bring some offensive firepower. Louisville returns 17 players, and they have had a couple of strong recruiting classes, including a recent top 10 class. (really strong recruiting)

Veteran MF/F Pedro Fonseca is a leader in the attacking third. Aboubacar Camara joins Pedro Fanseca up top to give Louisville a dangerous pair in the attacking third. Dante Huckaby highlights a top 10 recruiting class, and, he is an immediate impact add in back. Jack Fasteen is their ball winning defensive midfielder. Interested to see Chicago’s Patrick Ahdukiewicz, another midfielder, who has played on the U14, U15, U17 U.S. teams. And, besides the veteran Fonseca, Louisville added 3 year Davidson Captain midfielder, Jamie Diluzio. Josh Jones won’t be missed as a 6’5 converted defender. These are some of the players that stand out a bit, that will see some time for Louisville.

SLU as mentioned, returns most of its lineup, and, has added lots of depth all over the field as well. Offensively Seth Anderson, Isaiah Parker, Dylan Olson will provide some offensive depth with returning, Klein, Buendia, and Becher. They all bring a little something different to the attack. Anderson was named to the USYS national Best 11 team. His little brother Tanner (2023 target) played up on the team. Tanner opened his Illinois high school season with a hat trick in a battle of a pair of Illinois’ better teams. Chris Bruch is significantly improved a little more removed from injury.

Becher was one of the best offensive U23 players this summer nationally, scoring about a goal a game.

Schulte returns as one of the better keepers nationally. Murana and Keller anchor the A-10 best defense which returns everyone, (Vaughn, Niece, Wilkinson, Leeth, etc) and has added depth this year, with Freshmen Townsend and Ross, and IU transfer Palazzolo in the defensive midfield.

Last season, road scoring, and the last fading late, the last few seasons, have been the questions. It’s as deep as SLU has been in a while. We’ll see.

Thanks.  Planning to be there tomorrow night.  Looking forward to it.  Talked to Kalish the other day and he is excited by the team, their character, talent etc.  Now just need to pull it all together for 90 minutes.

Yep, good to have you back out to some games and in the soccer thread.

Having a 2nd 11 if you will is something Kevin and staff have been working towards ever since Brian Wiese told him that it was a difference maker in Georgetown’s National Title.

Games as you know don’t always end up the way one would expect on paper, but, this is on paper an attacking, goal scoring UL team that will be fun to watch, and, is vulnerable to counters and numbers. But those are some of the players I’d look for tonight. They also have a top 25 Freshmen keeper recruit but thus far he has been eased in behind their Grad student from Bermuda who has been their number one.
