Oh, I agree. I think Dosunmu got it in his head that they were gonna foul and it blinded him to the fact that they were obviously playing it straight up. It was really awkward sequence all the way around.

It didn't help that he was clearly exhausted the last two minutes, as his last three times with the ball went: garbage shot off the side of the backboard, turnover, garbage 35 footer off of one foot.  But great players, other than Lebron, aren't going to give up the ball in that situation.

I have no hard evidence of this, but I'd imagine that as the game as become more analytics based it paradoxically has exacerbated this problem.  Players are taught that the most efficient shots are 3s or at the rim and to always work for those shots.  However, on the final possession when a 3 isn't needed a higher % (but lower efficiency) mid-range shot you a better chance of actually winning them game.  Tough to change your habits for one possession.

Super simplified example - let's say you have a 35% chance of making a 3 which is good for 1.05 points per shot over the course of a game and you have a 40% chance of making a mid-range 2 which is .8 points per shot.  During the game in order to score more points you should always be shooting the 3 point shot.  However, on the last possession in a tied game (or down 1), you'd rather take the 2 point shot.

Players are also just better at shooting 3s now than they used to be, which makes them more likely to take that shot when they have a look.

A10 season kicks off today with UMass v LaSalle at Gola.

It has already been reported that the league altered it's Covid protocol, but they also approved $1.4 million relief for Covid issues.

Today's games:  Umass (-4.5) atLa Salle at 12 noon/11 CST on ESPN+.  Trying to beat Winter Storm Gail.  Then Richmond (-6.5) at Vandy at 1/12 on SEC network.  Vandy is 2 and 0 and at home.  Hmmm.

I'm a Spider fan for every game except for when they play us.  I want two A10 teams in the top 25.

Umass up 36 to 35 at half.  The Mausoleum is even more gloomy with the bleachers rolled back.  Six lead changes.  Each team had a six-point lead once.  Heater-skelter ball.  Umass insist on a full court press like last year but like last year, it’s easy to break.  La Salle doesn’t know how to finish.

Mitchell now with new career high of 37.  But it’s La Salle.  Clifton Moore with 4 fouls. Jared Kimbrough also with 4.  These are La Salle’s centers and counter to Mitchell.  They have more fouls than points (6).  In the middle of this half, La Salle missed everything.  Mitchell is no Obi Toppin but he establishes position down low and can’t be moved.  Plus he hit 2 of 3 treys.  The only way is he’s not POY might be Umass’ conference record.

Thanks courtside, explains a lot ... like why the starters only scored 7 points in the first half for Vandy.  Richmond wins 78 to 67 but even though Vandy was 2 and 0, they won both at home against Valpo and Mississippi Valley State.  Another balanced effort for Richmond's starting five.  All but nine points from the first five.

Yep, Harvey, Brown, Stute.

Vandy had only played two games prior due to COVID-19. So they were shorthanded, and, they haven't been tested. It was only Vandy's 2nd game in 19 days. The other was vs winless MVSU.

None of the 3 missing players are injured. All COVID-19 related.

Credit Richmond for taking advantage early, and for knocking down shots and building a big lead.

You can see what Vandy can do when Pippen was more aggressive attacking, creating for others in the 2nd half, making the extra pass. But they got away from that later in the 2nd half, as Richmond cooled off a bit from 3.

Richmond was both good off of the bounce in the backcourt, and vulnerable to it at the other end.

If and when Vandy gets everyone healthy, practices, games etc...hopefully the strength of the Richmond win will improve as the season progresses.
