I don't know, seems it is still hard to be a Billiken Fan.  The fact that we seems to have the most talented team ever, deeper than ever and it comes along when we have pandemic and the schedule is toast.   That goes along with it is hard to be ......

The fact that the whole season could be blown to smithereens by this damned plague is a concern. And we get hit with it when we have a team that on paper appears to be a serious contender for making a deep run does seem to play into the idea that it's "just our luck." I can sympathize with basketbill's concerns.

Won’t be any worse than what happened to Dayton and others last season so really no use lamenting about it now...

At least we’ve seen a successful NBA bubble and know the NCAA may collapse without the revenue from another NCAA Tournament. They’ll find a way.

I agree with you, don't get me wrong, it just how being a Billiken fan has been.  Really we should not be surprised that this may well be the best team we have ever had.....and not be able to see a full season....

Sounds like this season schools in college basketball hotbeds will benefit disproportionately from easier to accommodate, higher lever non-con schedules.

Thinking of NC where UNC, NS State, Davidson, Wake, Duke, UNC-W, Elon have a bunch of great options in state. Or IN with ND, IU, Purdue, Ball State, Valpo, Butler (and X, Cincy, Dayton, Depaul, Loyola and Louisville along the border).

Ouch.  Loading up with Q4 games, but you gotta do what you gotta do. SIUE booked up already?

I'm somewhat surprised we are going to the Twin Cities.  They are picked for bottom third of the Big Ten, but they do have a pretty good guard in Marcus Carr.  They also added 7 footer Robbins, a solid transfer from Drake.

I kind of wish the A10 was going to 20 games like many other conferences are doing.

Thank goodness we abandoned this for the Nebraska MTE... could’ve been a disaster

This is a big WOW.  Jeff Goodman reported that teams bailed due to the testing protocol.

I believe NE is still looking to fill their field (target 16).  I wonder if we can pick up a solid opponent or two that are now looking for games, or jump into a new MTE, which are bound to be opening up with all these teams now searching.

At this point I'll be glad if we can get a full(ish) non-con just a half step up from SIUE: any MVC team, Tulsa, Austin Peay, Eastern Ky (maybe coach can work his connections there).

That reasoning can hardly be taken on the surface right?

Like ESPN still wanted to broadcast the bones of a field they had down there? The MSUs of the world still wanted to play those games? I find that hard to believe. But then again, Goodman isn't known for being much of an analysis guy

More on why from CBS:  "The disagreement between schools expected to participate came over how stringent the protocols would be. ESPN put forth guidelines that fall in line with the CDC and NCAA, which are 'more restrictive than the protocols many conferences are planning to implement'.  There was also disagreement on how to handle Positive cases and how frequently players who recovered from the virus must be tested."

And from ESPN:  "ESPN Events set out to create a protected environment for teams to participate in early-season events in Orlando," an official statement from ESPN said. "Based on certain challenges surrounding testing protocols, we opted to resume these tournaments during the 2021-22 season."

"The challenges with testing protocols refers primarily to retesting players who had already previously tested positive for coronavirus and been cleared. The protocols for a player testing positive while in the Orlando bubble were another key discussion point."

That explains a lot.

A10 twitter's resident nerds and let's just say "misguided" podcasters came out with their Bills preview (starts at 10:18):

-Goodwin and French don't really have room to improve (????)

-They continue to refer to Weaver as a loss, as a real contributor, as if he wouldn't have been a benchwarmer had our two rotation guards not been lost for the season. Say later on that Ford misused him

-Continue to push the Ford is a bad coach narrative. Said he's been owned by Bob McKillop, even though the only game they've played that matters, SLU ran them out of the gym in Brooklyn. Bills are net +11 the last two seasons v. Davidson. They also dismiss the fact that Ford owns Schmidt, but apparently that doesn't matter as much.

-Doesn't see how there's any way they lose more than 6 games in conference (no sh!t sherlock)

-Thatch "can't shoot whatsoever" - terrific analysis

-They forgot Perkins existed for the first half of the preview as if he isn't one of the best players in the league

-SLU "should be" one of the top defenses in the league, along with Richmond and FORDHAM (terrific stuff, guys)

-One of the hosts tried to say that Dayton will be able to match SLU physically. That literally came out of someone's mouth

-One of the hosts want the bills to stop playing bullyball (#analysis)

-They want Jacobs to play more. One of the hosts forgot that he played 23 mins/gm. Geniuses, these two. They want to start either Jacobs or Jimerson because shooting is necessary - as if starting one of the best players in the league doesn't want to accomplish that

-WestPineBills asked: "Will the team pick up on where they left off at the end of last season? How far can they go if that's the case?"

Their answer: "They should pick up where they left off. If there's no improvement, they'll finish third or fourth." This was the most shocking thing in the entire preview. Bills were (by the numbers) playing like a top 10 team the last month of the season. That should be good enough for...….. fourth. FOURTH!!!

-They aren't very high on Thatch. Essentially say he's a defensive specialist and that's it

Just remember this: the more social media interaction they get, the angry comments, the likes and retweets, the better off they are. Of course they see that there’s a Billikens question in every single College BBall Q&A Mailbag on the Athletic. Of course they see the tweets from Rothstein  and even Vitale. Trolling Billikens fans is good for business and motivates fans from other schools to do the same. Not mention the inevitable home school bias for whatever team is their favorite. I’d take the podcast with a big fat grain of salt. Hopefully the guys hear it and use it as bulletin board material.

I listened to this today and don't agree with some of your analysis honestly. I don't think the 3 bid league guys have given us our rightful respect but I disagree it was as bad as you are claiming.

I didn't think they called Weaver a huge loss at all. I feel like they barely mentioned him.

Fordham was 10th in the country in scoring defense last year so that's a valid point...

Didn't think they ever advocated us to stop playing bully ball. I thought they mentioned us needing to score in more ways than just banging it inside.

While I disagreed with their analysis of Perkins, they talked about him for quite awhile. Just because he wasn't mentioned in the first sentence doesn't mean they didn't talk about him enough.

They meant if they don't improve on anything they'll finish fourth. Which I almost agree with. We won't win the A10 if our offense isn't better. That's a fact.

Thatch hasn't shown enough to the rest of the A10 to say that he's anything but a defensive specialist. I can't wait for Fred to prove them wrong but they don't listen to every rumor about how good he's been in practice.

That's just my take. I think they don't give us due credit, but let's just earn it instead.

I agree.  They said if we don't improve at all, our floor is fourth.  If we take the expected step forward, then they said we have a real chance at making it to the second weekend of the NCAA tournament.  That's fair.

And as for Thatch, they expect that his role will be as a defensive stopper off the bench because we need Jimerson's shooting in the starting lineup.  I also think that's a reasonable assessment.

3 Star I always value your opinion/posts on all things Billikens. And while it would be great to get to the Sweet 16, I think this team’s ceiling may be higher. I think the players being overlooked are Thatch, Jimmy Bell, and Linssen. These guys could be huge difference makers on this team. I really believe we could be a Butler, WSU, or Loyola type team that makes it to the finals. Of course, it will largely depend on our draws, but I still feel their are few teams as talented and deep as Team Blue.
