Should Senior Athletes Get Extra Year?

Recommended Posts

A point was made in Dave Matter's PD article this morning on spring athletes getting an extra year.  Would this be open for ALL spring athletes, meaning juniors, sophomores and freshmen all get a 4th year, as well as seniors.  Good point.  Why would only the seniors get a 4th year?  Why not the entire spring squad getting a reset?  With the NCAA cutting their $ to schools this year due to the hoops cancel, where would the money come from?  And if you do give everyone back this season, that means you have four years of enlarged rosters. The NCAA is reporting that they will vote on this issue Monday.

The NCAA has given all spring sports athletes a mulligan on this season. At least they didn't limit this to seniors.

But they are leaving it up to each university how they want to handle this.  Lots of unanswered questions.  With the NCAA dollars coming to schools cut back this year, it will be interesting to see what schools do.

-so in SLU's situation, does the ADept write a check to some office at DuBourg Hall for the cost of educating the student athletes?

No but they have a budget. Athletic scholarships are charged against that budget.

-is "they" DuBourg Hall or the ADept? maybe both?

-I understand there is much, much more to an athletic scholarship than this, IF there is no cash outlay for having more student/athletes but is rather a non-cash budget exercise, does it matter on this basis alone if there are more student/athletes? I understand all, or maybe most, of the cash costs to the ADept that would increase because of more student/athletes and it seems this would have a big impact on the ADept

No, fall/winter sport senior athletes should absolutely not get an extra year. Spring athletes sure, as they missed most if not all of their season (but I would extend this to all spring athletes, not just seniors).

There are bigger issues in the world. You got your 4 year college education through playing a sport. You played three full seasons and most of the 4th and it got cut a bit short due to a global pandemic. It be like that sometimes. It sucks but move on.

Obviously a VERY long time ago, but how did the NCAA handle the kind of thing when World War II disrupted sports seasons?  How did sports, in general, handle it.  Everything will trickle down, and the effects may last for years.

NCAA continued but most good athletes were gone.  For instance my grandfather, who played football in the 20s for what is now Central Missouri decided to continue his graduate studies at SEMO during the war and played basketball there in his late 30s.  Players who went to war didn't lose their eligibility, many came back and played after the war was over.

We’ll see what happens if/when chunks of next seasons are also thrown into disarray by this situation.
