You're assuming that "being at the mercy of Chinese" outweighs "let's make the most money for our shareholders" in the cost/benefit analysis of corporate decision makers.  If the corporations were that patriotic, they never would have moved all those jobs offshore in the first place.

When those decisions were made, I don't think I would call those companies 'not patriotic'.  But that was then and now is now.  Hindsight is pretty easy.  For me we need a serious rethinking about moving  jobs back into our own borders.

Stanford study shows the number of people with antibodies in Santa Clara is 50-85 times the number that are reported which makes mortality rates there 50-85 times less. I assume that’s good news but still somewhat scary

If the study is correct it means for the Santa Clara area the death rate is basically the same as the flu. Dont know how that relates to other areas.

I believe there was some thought that the west coast was more likely to have this level of undetected or misdiagnosed because they have more connection to China - flights coming in and out of LAX, SFO, etc. Since China covered this thing up and misled everyone for 2 or 3 months, they had a much better chance of having people who were on flights back and forth from Wuhan/China at large. The numbers probably don't correlate to STL or anywhere else, but the mortality rate would definitely be lower. And that is something that most scientist/medical types have said would happen since the beginning of this.

When you start finding large numbers of people with antibodies against Covid, people which are unaccounted for, this may suggest many possible cases. One that interests me is the possibility that the population tested may have been in contact with Covid or similar viruses prior to the present epidemic and are still carrying antibodies to it in their blood. There is nothing extraordinary about the possibility of other Corona epidemic and lots of people carrying antibodies from before the time of the present epidemic. You have to understand that Corona produces clinical symptoms similar to influenza, but prior to this year there was no way to separate the Corona cases from the pool of people with flu like symptoms. Therefore, prior Corona epidemics may  have passed totally undetected and bundled into the "flu" category in prior years.

If this possibility is correct, then the current PCR tests may be detecting fragments left over from prior epidemics which are not currently infectious or capable of transferring the disease. This would make the whole issue with measuring "new" cases suspect, as we may be measuring old cases that already have immunity. I am not saying this is a fact, but it is a probable scenario for this epidemic.

what a b.s.article.   while reading keep in mind not one american died from the chinese flu virus prior to February 29th.    no way the libs would have stood for any mandates, emergency spending bills, etc at that point.

It's very clear from this response that you absolutely did not read the article.

While we'll never really know, we can at least look back to how the Democrats (and Republicans) responded during the financial crisis.

you are right.   after i came to "The administration squandered two irretrievable months to prepare."   which would have to mean, January and February since march and now april, the president has been all over this chinese virus issues, i quit reading.  it was obvious the atlantic "article" intended to spray the nonsense about wasting January and February.   again, why would the president take drastic national mandates and spend trillions of dollars in relief and aid if no one has even died.   amazing how hindsight is always right though.  Ha!

Good, in the 2008-09 financial crisis, also during election times, McCain (the Republican) showed himself to be a one pony show (military) and know exceedingly little about the economy. Obama (the Democrat of course) has a good grasp of the situation. Obama won, the rest is history.

People in other countries had died. Why in the world would you wait until an American has died to prepare?

I think i was referring more to the initial bank bailout package that had broad support from the Democrats, but less support from Republicans, as well as the stimulus package that received no Republican support.  My point is that Democrats tend to have a history (recent and not) of more proactive responses than the Republicans.  Much of this is probably due to one group believing government has a role to play and the other thinking that government is the problem.
