Why I hate St B's

The Bonnie comments over on A10 talk are made of quite-Billiken-Board-meltdown proportions.  Apparently, they hate us just as much as we hate them.  From Saturday's game, they bemoaned the fact they were boys against men. They condemned our style of play and likened it to the old days of the original A10 and Big East when Syracuse, Uconn, Temple, and others were dominant big men and brutish guards.  They said "OO" (I like that for Osun Osunniyi) was manhandled by French.  They credited that to OO's inability to get in the weight room due to a shoulder injury this past summer and wonder if his knee will prevent weight development this off-season.  Even if they win in Brooklyn Thursday, many expect SLU to thrash them again come Friday.  They are keen on the Schmidt staff getting out of Brooklyn so they can go to Hutchinson, KS, and recruit JUCO help for next year or the same roster returns and that roster has demonstrated that it cannot compete with the likes of us, Dayton, Rhode Island and the other big boys of the current A10.  They recognize that they do not have players capable of generating offense without help.  A lot of internal fear and loathing going on in the Great White North.  We all know about that.

Having said that, they are a royal PITA as described.  Those commenting seem to count us a a decent rivalry due to the A10 matching the two of us up late every year.  This year was a big year in our game because early on, they were playing us for the four seed as it were.  Last year, in the season finale, they beat us in Olean to secure the four; then lost to us in the final tournament game with a decent shot to win.  Which ended their season.  They beat us twice the preceding year enroute to a Dance bid; and they beat us twice the year before that.  Ditto 2015-16.  They beat us in a single matchup in 2014-15.  I was there in Brooklyn when Jordan Gaithers sent us home with one second left in Jett's senior year; the guy had scored two points the entire game to that point.  That was the start of nine wins in ten games.  Yeah, reason to hate, or at least dislike them, greatly.

I've always said Schmidt seems to do more with less but he has managed to get decent players in his time there.  OO.  Lofton.  Stockard.  Mobley.  Adams.  Nicholson.  The list seems endless.

As for a Bonnie, the original name of the school's sports team was "Alleghanies," named for the river the school sits on.  That then changed to the "Brownies," named for the color of the robes worn by the Franciscans that ran the school.  In the early 90's, the school adopted the name "Brown Indians" in deference to that color and the Seneca Nation in nearby Salamanca, NY, a scant 20 miles to the west.  The student mascot first dressed in full headdress and attire provided by the Salamanca Nation as far back as 1961, and they even had a female dress as the "Brown Squaw."  Different times.  They stopped this in 1992 when the wave of disrespected feelings of the Native American nation overtook main stream America.

They adopted "The Bonnies" soon thereafter but the wolf and Bonnie in their emblem first appeared in 1999.  This was done to reflect an event in the life of St. Francis of Assisi, the founder of the  Franciscan order,  in the legend of the taming of the wolf at Gubbio, Italy.

Typically, as slu72 referenced, "Bonnie" is associated with the song "My Bonnie Lies over the Ocean," which has no connection to the Bonaventure Bonnie.  Bonnie Is a Scottish word used to describe a pretty lass but many believe it was in reference to Bonnie Prince Charles, a claimant to the British throne who was defeated and exiled abroad .... over the ocean.

So, yeah, pure hatred.

Mascots are an interesting study .... I get the Minutemen, the Colonials, the Explorers, the Patriots.  I think the Flyers were named for the Wright Brothers coming from that area.  The mascot is named "Rudy" because YouDee are his middle letters.  I don't get the Rams of Rhode Island or Fordham or VCU.  The Hawks of St. Joe.  The Spah-ders of Richmond.  Were there even Wildcats in North Carolina?  Why they all can't be sensible like the Billikens, I'll never know.

I hope you know I’m just messing around.

also saw that Ivy League cancelled its conference tourney. I’m praying that doesn’t happen for us

I like and appreciate what Taj posts, but I find myself not having any major set of feelings for or against the Bonnies, perhaps this is because I always liked the way our Bonnie poster (Brown Indian) has always been correct and polite, which I appreciate.

Did you mean 90s here? So they were only the Brown Indians for a few years?

@RiseAndGrind: I bear no ill will to folks entitled to their opinions.

Yes, the Ivy cancelled; declared their regular season champs as NCAA tournament reps.  They don’t get multiple bids anyway and usually go home soon enough.  Will they go to regionals?  Chicago State and UMKC declined time go to or host teams from Seattle.

Santa Clara County in CA is barring gatherings over 1k per Bay Area Billiken.  That’s the NHL Sharks, NCAAW at Stanford and MLS games.  A Fordham student living in the dorms has tested positive.  Fordham and Columbia sent their kids home.  We are at Barclays and the Beast is at MSG.

Millions ride NYC subways daily.  The end is nigh......

There are serious discussions taking place about shutting down the subway system.  I don't know if they are close to that point, but the conversations about what might bring about shutting down the system are ongoing.

Wikipedia says Brown Indians from 1927 to 1992. That would seem to make more sense.

From the Bona Wikipedia article:

Quote

From 1927 to 1992, St. Bonaventure's mascot was the Brown Indian. As part of an ongoing debate over Native American mascots, however, this was changed to the Bona Fanatic.[19] This new mascot was poorly received, so much so that costume wearers were assaulted by St. Bonaventure fans. After only a few years (1996–1998) in existence, the Fanatic was dropped in favor of the current Bona Wolf.

Holy sh*t.  Can you imagine fans assaulting a mascot today?  I had to look up more info and found this: https://www.webcitation.org/5z7a2B8yQ?url=http://web.sbu.edu/friedsam/archives/symbols/bona_fanatic.htm

Quote

In an article dated January 31, 1997 reports of the mascot getting hurt are included. Two freshman shared rally duties in the suit. Taylor Nicklaus and Lori Magenis were recipients of cracked ribs, bruises, abrasions, and a dislocated knee. Nicklaus is quoted as saying "The crowd rushed onto the court at the University of Buffalo game and started roughing me up. I had a cracked rib, a cut nose and bruises on my  arms and legs." Nicklaus also states "There have been home games were fans attempted to push me down the stairs." Magenis includes tales in which she said it was hard to work in the costume and after tripping because of poor visibility she dislocated her knee. Even the suit itself was not conducive to the needs of a school mascot. Nicklaus states; "...the inside part of the legs and boots give me rug burns, ...and the shoes are at least four sizes too big."

In an attempt to help the students inside of the suit, the Athletic Director bought an ice pack system to help keep the suit cool. In response to student harassment the mascot also received an escort to all the games.

More evidence that St. Bonaventure and their fans are just terrible and deserve our hatred.

@brianstl and anyone else interested ..... it's the flu, a variation yes, but the flu.  Almost 700 have died; yet over 50,000 have had it and recovered to no ill effects.  Didn't we do this with Alar and apples?  Anybody remember ebola and AIDS?  How about MRSA or H1N1?  Is the 24-hour news cycle and the need to fill dead air space on multiple national channels brought us to this?  If you are going to cancel games, fine.  Cancel them.  Pump in crowd noise; put cardboard people in the seats.  Create the new "Running Man."  Ooo, Bluto, the poor vendors and ticket takers will be out of a job.  Give them free money.  Call Bernie in for it.  Cancel college classes (already done at local Towson University; teleclass for two weeks after Spring Break in effect). Cancel school.  Cancel Spring Break.  Close the malls.  Close the subway.  Airports will now screen for body temps above 98.6 degrees instead of weapons.  The Diary of a World Gone Wimpy.  A global economy brought to ruins by the cold.  We are really screwed when that zombie apocalypse hits.

What is your point Taj? What would you have us do differently? You think the world has gone wimpy because people are talking about what preventative measures to protect against a virus which has killed 631 people in Italy alone? Or do you just enjoy the sound of hearing yourself type so much that you find it necessary to ramble on in pithy fragments about an issue that is actually pretty serious for a lot of people?

Coronaviruses are not strains of influenza.

Most people won’t get COVID-19.  Most who get it won’t need to be hospitalized. The vast vast majority who need to be hospitalized won’t die.  None of that changes the fact that COVID-19 has a massive hospitalization rate that wreaks havoc on the health systems where it reaches epidemic level. You don’t need to believe me on that. Just look at what has happened in Italy that has more hospital beds, nurses and doctors per person than the US.

I’m not worried about personally dying or even getting sick from Coronavirus. The chances of me being hospitalized or dying because of the virus are extremely remote.  That doesn’t mean that this virus can’t wreak destruction on this country.

He’s trying to tell you to have some perspective and know the facts.. Why isn’t there wide spread panic every year about a much deadlier virus? The panic is absurd..

While everyone is in a panic about the coronavirus(officially renamed COVID-19 by the World Health Organization), there's an even deadlier virus many people are forgetting about: the flu.

Flu season is hitting its stride right now in the US. So far, the CDC has estimated (based on weekly influenza surveillance data) that at least 12,000 people have died from influenza between Oct. 1, 2019 through Feb. 1, 2020, and the number of deaths may be as high as 30,000.

That author should have waited a day before writing that article. If he would have waited a day he could have saved himself the embarrassment of labeling the actions in Lombardy as hysteria. In the time since he wrote the article the healthcare system in Lombardy has collapsed under stress from COVID-19 patients.  They don’t have enough beds, personal, equipment or medicine to deal with the crush of patients they are dealing with. They have had to go to a triage system for anyone with any medical condition. If you have a massive heart attack, you are SOL.  Need a ventilator, there are none available.

Maybe if people didn’t hyperventilate about the dangers, the hospitals wouldn’t be flooded with patients...how many here have routinely headed to the hospital in the past  when experiencing cold symptoms??? Panic breeds panic...

@NH:  to be clear .... any illness can be serious to populations at risk.  Explain to me why we haven't shut this country down annually for the flu.

We know a lot more about the flu than we do the Coronavirus. We have vaccines. We know exactly how it spreads. We know the death rate. We know very little about COVID-19, and until we do, the risk associated with that uncertainty is a lot higher than it is for influenza. One thing we don't know, but that seems possible, is that the R0 might be a lot higher and the death rate might be a lot higher for COVID-19 than it is for influenza. And until those things get figured out, I think you should cut people a little slack for taking preventative measures.

I'm not saying we should shut everything down. I ride the subway to work every morning and plan to do the same thing tomorrow. I'm also not an expert on infectious diseases and can't tell other people how they should feel. But your approach of complaining for complaining's sake, when things could be more serious than you or I know, feels even less productive than the "hysteria" that you and others seem to be so up in arms about.

We do have a vaccination for it. I get my Senior double dose shot every year plus my boosters to pneumoachoncial pneumonia every year.  Probably because I'm old.

It isn’t people going to the hospital with the sniffles that is the problem. The ICU admission rate for this virus is crazy.  People who think this thing is nothing and people who think this is the end times have all been paying attention to the wrong numbers.  It isn’t  the amount of people who die from this virus that is really scary. It is the number of people it sends to the ICU that is terrifying.

In the US, the high end of the range for annual flu deaths is 61,000. The low end for annual flu infections is 9,300,000. Therefore, the most lethal hypothetical flu would have a death rate of 0.6%. The death rate of Covid-19 is 2-4 times that. Plus the typical lethality of the flu is closer to 0.1% anyway. And Covid-19 has a longer incubation period, which is at least part of the reason it appears to be more contagious.

It’s not just the flu.
