Well, if everyone's sold on another big, how about a Cody Ellis type, a stretch 4. At this point, I don't see Hankton being that guy. But that could be due to injury.?

i was hoping hankton would grow into that stretch four guy, maybe he still will. injuries have slowed him. i agree though another big on the roster, losing french and goodwin after next year leaves a rebounding hole that needs to be filled.

With the development of Jimmy Bell, and hopefully Diara, I'm not so sold on another big. I'd really like another sniper to go alongside the Gibber.

If French goes down, our run at the postseason is effectively over.  If we lose Weaver, we can still muck it up and and win playing bully ball. And someone will improve their three point percentage next season.  It always happens, we're just not sure who.

You get the best big you can get.  If his range only extends to 15 feet, so be it.

I guess you are saying or implying that Perkins and Hargrove would not be adequate replacements for Has at the 4. Granted they're not him, not many players are, so adjustments would have to be made.

Perkins and Hargrove are more guard than forward. We will need shooters and forwards.  Not so sure the new guy will be a shooter.  Probably another 3.
All I know is that all our guards are playing and contributing. Diarra and Hankton are not.  Will next year be any better or not?  Not sure. Bigs take longer to develop but development presumes underlying higher level D1 forward talent is present.  I don’t know but trust Coach Ford.
But not sure how we can say we are set with shooters for next year. We are short this year, we lose Weaver next year, we hope GJ will be 100% all next year and even if Perkins excels as our shooting guard next year, he will be a Senior.

We're not sure set on shooters but our lack of shooting is directly related to our top two scorers not being good shooters for their position.  We will never see another guard at SLU that rebounds like Goodwin but whoever our lead guard is after he graduates will surely be a better shooter.

Which is why we cannot stockpile non-shooters w similar skills.

We're kind of leaving Thatch out of the equation. As for shooting, Ford said over the summer Fred was one of the best from the arc. He also was a top scorer on his HS team. Here's hoping he's good to go and regains his shot. If it's a big, I'm hoping for stretch 4 type.

Prior to Thatch’s illness, Thatch did not show a shooter’s mentality from the perimeter. Same with Jacobs.  And no doubt Hargrove will make a few 3’s.  Same with Yuri and Goodwin.  But GJ showed this mentality even when he was off and missed.  And he was guarded even when he missed. And spacing was there for the other 4 when GJ was on the court. Until Yuri becomes a threat from the 3 point line and w Goodwin in the lineup, the pressure falls on the other guard - which is why GJ is so important. I suggest we need both another shooter and another big.

I think the book on Fred's mentality has yet to be written. Last year he focused on D and he had to defer to Bess and Isabell on O. This year was cut short. But he was a high volume scorer in HS. Granted that does not always translate to D1. But if Travis is to be believed he was shooting well over the summer, and I think Ford would have told him to be more aggressive on O. Hopefully, he comes back from his setback and proves to be an additional scoring threat this year. Lord knows we need it with Jimerson going down.

big plus one there. Swimming in the deep end with our new found depth is uncharted waters around here. not counting our junior studs we have at least 5 guys with the talent to step up and be major contributor.

You are correct about the book not being closed on Thatch. And I am hopeful and do believe that Fred has some shooting touch and that Coach Ford was probably right over the summer.  And as Brian points out, Thatch may not have been 100% or anywhere close to that this year. But Thatch was not a 3 point shooter in high school and I am not buying his role as a defensive specialist by design.  We needed outside shooting more last year than  this year and if Fred could do it last year, he had the green light.

Normal teams have 3 guards who can shoot - with some being better than others.  Goodwin’s skills are unique and truly valued by me and everyone else, but he is not a shooter.  And neither is Yuri - not yet.  Which places the burden squarely and more so than normal on the 2 guard.  This year, we will now need a committee- Weaver, Perkins , Jacobs and hopefully Thatch - but conference games will slow down and the lanes will get packed.

No St. Louis metro shooters have emerged in the 2021 class.  That's why I've been beating the drum for the Haney kid out of Dora.  Missouri State has been a disappointment this year and we may have a chance to steal him out of their backyard.  Big-time shooter with a bit of dog in him.

NM (moved message to recruiting thread).
