GDT BC: Where Eagles Die

Recommended Posts

Collins has a bad game against Belmont and a bad first half against BC.  He had a good second half against BC.  He had four assists and only 1 turnover in the second half against BC.

I hope Yuri has a similar trajectory to KM's freshman. Show flashes early in the season, but some inconsistent play (which is what you expect from most freshmen), but then by the last month and a half of the season, he emerges as one of our best, most consistent players.

He's playing against bigger, more athletic defenders. I'm confident he'll figure out what kind of passes he can get away with and not try to force things as much.

Yuri doesn't see himself as a scorer, but there were a couple of wide open 3s available to him yesterday. I was yelling "take it, Yuri". I think his scoring will come, never to a big #, but right now he's been pretty good at setting guys up to score. Give him time. Perkins is more assertive on the floor than Jacobs. He's looking to get points and his board work helped yesterday. I didn't peg him as a starter, but it wouldn't bother me if he got the nod.

Yes. I get it.  But a real scorer to me is someone who can and does put up double digit points each game.  No one is expecting that of Yuri. But there is a difference between being a scorer and going scoreless.  Again, I like what he brings to the team - but requiring 2 points every 5 minutes should not be asking too much.  If he makes his FT’s alone he would add 6 ppg.
And I appreciate the Box Score Plus stats. Assume the WS and WS/40 are win shares and win shares per game?

FT shooting  and turnovers are most likely a big component of Yuri’s scores.  And again, I am hoping its his wrist injury more so than him being overmatched

But I said the same with Fred.  I liked his game as a defensive specialist as a Freshman - but again, scoring 4 to 6 ppg is just carrying your own weight - not anyone else’s.  We just don't have the talent on this team to have guys not carry their own weight.

I think there interesting thing in the 2nd half was that Ford barely subbed after the big run. He went with the 5 that were out there, and he kept them out there. Notably, Yuri and Perkins missed a couple of bunnies, but those provided easy opportunities for French and Goodwin.

I don't think players should pass to Perkins on the fast break unless they want him finishing. Because he's not giving the ball back.

Team will rely on different guys in different games. I think CF could play Weaver a little more. He seems like a stabilizing force and a good shooter.

I kind of see some of Yuri's A's as like sacrifices in baseball. Not all the time but some of them. For example he had nice penetration on one play but gave it up to Has. It was a sweet little pass. Ok, I'll grant u to be a complete PG a better stat line would be a ppg avg of close to 10ppg. Let's give him some time to get there. He does need a little more bulk to muscle his way on some of those driving layups.

Virginia was a national championship team with a point guard averaging 4.5 ppg and a team averaging 71 ppg.  Yuri already scores enough to warrant playing big minutes.  As a team we need to shoot better. I'm confident that will happen as the newcomers get more games under their belt.

How do you figure Yuri making his free throws will add 6 ppg?

Hes 11/23 an average of 3 per game and I don't see that increasing by all that much. He's not looking to create a lot of contact. He's looking to draw and dish. even if he had made 75% this year it'd be 5 more points total.

I'd say he needs to shoot better, but I don't think I care if he shoots more than 6-8 times a game.

If 2 pts every 5 minutes is required,  that would mean five player playing 40 minutes would each score 16 pts, or average 80 ppg as a team.

We need to start benching a LOT of players.

Sorry.  Bad math on my part.  Meant to say 2 points per 10 minutes.  6 points per 30 minutes seems reasonable for Yuri.

And 3 to 4,ppg could be FTs alone.

besides apparently a hand injury (i havent noticed but it has been discussed often here) the biggest difference is that Yuri has now played against some bigger, faster and better teams and all his current physical limitations are showing.    hopefully with continued work in the weight room and maturity over the next 3.5 years that will be minimized.   his smaller size was my reluctance to jump on yurimania from day one.   that said, i have seen enough to now confidently say he can/will play at this level.   now it is more a question of whether he will turn into ernie digregorio or not by 2023.   but at this point, after seeing the cards travis ford has to play, i agree yuri is a must play and a high minute guy on the 2018-19 roster.

I’m proud of you Roy.You have taken a half step on the Yuri express. Hopefully you will take the full step by the end of the year.

He doesn't ever have to be the spotlight because he's perhaps the most unselfish player in the modern era.

Yuri’s dropoff in production is the result of a lot of things.  In addition to what you identify above, our shooting has been bad the last 2 games, leading to less assists. We are playing better teams, which cuts down our margin of error. Yuri is going to be just fine. I just hope he cuts down the lazy unforced errors and hits a few more FTs.
