Back home from the game and what a game it was. We won of course, by 22 pts about 3X the spread, it was a solid win. The game itself was, at times, not pretty. The stadium was less than 50% filled, the student section was packed and very enthusiastic, but by the start of the 2nd half about 30% of them had left. Eastern Washington played well and solid game. Their style of play was similar, very similar to my eyes, to ours. They had obviously done their research and looked at the videos of our games and basically succeeded in stopping us for a long time in the first half. We had trouble getting ahead although by half time we were up over 10 pts.

Interesting game in many ways. French did not come alive and started scoring until fairly late in the first half, EWU was countering us effectively. I think the difference was made by Yuri primarily. He was extraordinary in every way and some of his passes were amazing. Of course French and Thatch scored in the double figures well and rebounded well. Weaver and Goodwin came close to double figures. Goodwin rebounded well, Weaver only had 1 rebound. The depth of our bench made all the difference in this game. Everybody or just about everybody scored, Weaver and Perkins both made series of 3 pointers which were very nice. Jacobs did less this game than in the prior game, but he managed some incredible moves and scores. Bell of all people managed to get 2 bloc, scored 4 points including FTs and got 4 rebounds, I do not recall seeding anyone taking the ball out of his hands. Hankton did not score or rebound much. When French had to be taken out after injuring his lower left leg (he walked out with a minor limp), Hankton did a good defensively job covering for him. Jimerson played good defense but scored less than in prior games. Hargrove did play about 7 minutes + and managed to get 4 pts and one assist. The major contributors in assists were Yuri, Perkins, and French.

Looking a our and their stats, we were pretty even in TOs and Rebounds. We had significant more assists, blocks and steals than EWU had. In other words we managed to outplay them enough to win this game the way we did. Again I must emphasize EWU was tough and gave us a hard fought game. Our team played together like a team and seemed to integrate well, we have proven we can play a very athletic close contact game against similar opponents playing in a similar fashion and win by a wide margin and over the spread. Now on to the next game, Seton Hall.

So far we are doing just fine, and I think we can beat Seton Hall. It may not be easy to do but I think we can do it. Go Bills!

@slu72

Yuri's 11 assists bring him to a season average of 8.33 per game.  Pending other games being played tonight, that ranks him 5th for all of Division I; and 1st among Freshman.

If you haven't asked slu72 if there's room on his Yuri bandwagon by now, you may want to stick that thumb out high and hope he'll pick you up.

Yes, I know it's only 3 games.  But plenty to get excited about.

Is slu72 Scotty Highmark??? I finally got to watch the game and 5 minutes into Yuri's 3rd collegiate game, Highmark said Yuri is "one of the best on ball defenders you will see in college basketball." Wow.

Jimmy Bell slow and short on the short

FYI @dennis_w, on that play I described exactly the way the play went down.

i think Jimmy is slow because of confidence.

My wife and I live in Cedar Hill and my wife drives all the way from her job in Perryville Mo to attend games and we stay to the end and cheer our team off the court at the tunnel the team exits.

I have a strong and loud voice and I was yelling great game Jimmy standing above Jimmy as he went through the tunnel.

Why do posters get triggered when other posters give an honest account of the team we love?

Happy 3-0 start Dennis this is exciting.

Ford still not overly impressed, but what coach is ever truly happy? Maybe we've just scratched the surface on how good we can be. We'll find out a lot on Sunday. I like the fact our starters are staying under 30 mpg. JGood only 22 minutes tonight. Save those legs, guys, we're gonna need them come Jan and Feb. Maybe we are the VCU of '19-20. They were picked 8th last year and ran away with the title. Trying to stay grounded here, but after 3 games in the 80s it's kind of difficult to keep your feet on the ground.

I still don't think we've seen the full Gibson yet. I paid particular attention to him last night, and as someone pointed out after the Valpo game, he's being shadowed pretty tightly. Hope they're working on some moves or off ball screens to shake him loose. Weaver's impressed every game. Great pickup by Travis. Hargrove found a bit of his groove last night giving us a glimpse of some highlight slamma jamma. Can't wait until he and Yurimania are totally in synch. As the man said, You ain't seen nothing yet.

FT's continue to be a struggle for anyone in a Billiken uni. That will hurt us at some point this season, if we don't improve it.

Keep rolling Bills. Sunday we'll hopefully see a jam packed wild and crazy Fetz crowd. There have to be a lot of college BB fans in St. Louis who just haven't got the word yet that something special is brewing in mid town and it's time to get your butt down there to taste it.

My wife and I saw that segment last night and enjoyed it, we had just got home just in time to see it.

Yuri had a magical night with 11 assists.

I agree fully with what you say and understand the level of your commitment and joy at seeing how we are playing. My wife told me this morning that ESPN+ had included one of our plays from last night's game in their list of nationwide notable plays, I have not checked yet but this is a notable achievement.

Wow, how did Jacobs managed to collect and finish that at full speed? That was some serious athleticism. And a block to rescue Goodwin after another careless TO.

Unbelievable body control on Jacobs part.  It went from a play that I was convinced was going to be a turnover followed by a timeout by Ford to get the team to regroup to a bucket.

Buzz Killington has a point here

we would be averaging like 88 ppg.  Ft's are good with in-game scenarios, but when you look at FT's from a whole, its not much.

So pumped 3 games into this season.   There were a bunch of unknowns even though much of the board was high on YC and GJ.  They've lived up to our hype, most don't but it's our nature as fans to be optimistic about our guys.

11 Assists is so awesome no matter who you're playing.   Dude is exactly what this team needed a player that can create for others.   We have some athletes but not all of them can create shots for themselves consistently.   So we needed someone that can make the offense more cohesive.

Usually I think 12 turn overs per game is the bench mark.  At 12 you're ok, under you're good,  above you're bad.  However,  since we're playing at a faster pace perhaps 14 should be the bench mark.   The beginning of this game was sloppy.  We'll need to come out strong taking care of the ball and work the ball inside to HF.  That has multiple benefits gets one of our top players involved with higher % shots, his size/ strength can eventually wear down another team and they hack him and end up in foul trouble later.  That will pay dividends later in the game as we have a deeper bench this season and we hopefully stay fresh to end games strong.  We can't rely on FT shooting at the end of games.

ABomb, I was thinking last night about turnovers too. A few more TOs on a team scoring in the 80s instead of 50s and 60s isn't that big a deal. Agree with your thinking.

The Billikens are turning the ball over on 16.5% of their offensive plays this season.  That ranks 151st.  Last season the Billikens turned it over on 16% of their offensive plays.  That ranked 163rd.

I get it ...14 TOs  is a C ...we are 14.3 about average....My concern is SHall has one of the lowest TO rates ITN at 9.5/ gm (A rated)....that is a TO differential of nearly 5...could be worth 10 pts to SHall .   If we can cut the TO differential to 2 in SHall's favor , (Bills target of no more than 11 TOs )  I would call the game even.  We need to avoid unforced errors.

I suspect the Bills will force Seton Hall into more turnovers than average.  Seton Hall hasn't likely been playing teams as talented as the Billikens so far in producing that turnover rate, and playing on the road also affects that aspect of the game.  I will be shocked if the Pirates don't have double-digit turnovers Sunday.

That may be true....while the Bills schedule has been rated at D....SHall has been rated at F....The last piece of the TO puzzle is the number of TOs by opponent....both teams are excellent at forcing TOs...both rated A....with the Bills at 18.3/ gm and SHall at 18.

Starting off Frank and Martin's show on 590 today, they began with a 3-4 minute segment on Yuri, primarily and the Bills.

I just wish they did not spend 10 minutes with Bruce Weber, later in the show, primarily discussing his outstanding recruiting class in which, I have to admit, he kicked Travis's rear by getting two local recruits who I think we really wanted.  I hope LK and DB are happy getting a few minutes of local STL pub, since it is likely the most they will receive over the next 4 years.  Think about it.  How much have we heard and read about X Sneed who is staring at Little Manhatten.  Of course Weber poor-mouthed his team this year so that he is covered no matter what they do against the Bill next month in KC.

I have always wondered about this issue - do you think it is the attitude that how exciting it is to have a local boy go to a big program so lets celebrate it? or is just that some of these coaches are willing to come on and so they just schedule them?

Anyone else still rock hard from last night? If not, take one of these and wait 30 seconds:

That sequence reminds me of the story of NFL running backs buying steak dinners for their O_Linemen.  HF, TJ and J Bell should pool their resources and take Yuri out for a meal!
