He should crack the junior total points list in the next game he is currently 12th, though (has 452, needs 459 to tie Reggie Bryant). He has 304 rebounds, which makes him 7th for juniors. His 10.5 RPG would put him 8th all-time among juniors, or 9th if French's average ends up above his. He has 769 career rebounds, which is 8th all-time. If he keeps up his average in the next three games, he'll pass Eugene Moore (790) for 7th all-time. He'd finish outside the junior top 10 in assists at his current pace he is 14th but that list is also in play if we go on a run (has 90, needs 112). He now has 59 steals, tied with LaTodd Johnson for most all-time among juniors. 59 also puts him tied with Johnson for 6th all-time in a season for any class. He's now 3rd in career steals, with 177. He will top Bonner's 192 steals before he is done and will pass Josh Fisher (179) for 2nd in the next few games. He is currently second in career MPG (34.5), sitting between Javon Bess (36.5) and Tommie Liddell (34.4).

-Hasahn French is the program's all-time blocked shots leader, with 194 and counting. He broke Ian Vouyoukas' junior blocks record of 55 and has 69 on the season. 73 (Willie Reed's sophomore year) remains the all-time all-class record and should fall in the next few games, and French currently owns the 2nd, 4th, and 6th place marks in the all-class top 10. His 7 blocks against Belmont are tied for the second most in a single game (Kelvin Henderson had 8 against Siena in 1979 and Willie Reed had 7 against Dayton in 2009), and his 5 against Seton Hall and GW are also among the 20 times in SLU history that a player has registered 5 or more blocks in a game. He has 290 rebounds, currently 8th in the junior top 10; his 10.4 RPG would make him 9th all-time among juniors tied with Bonner, with a chance to finish 8th if he ends up averaging more than Goodwin this season. His 24 rebounds against Belmont are tied for third-most in a game in school history (Rich Parks had 24 against Arkansas State in 1966, Bob Nordman had 27 against Kansas in 1959, and Jerry Koch had 38 vs. Bradley in 1954) and marked only the 16th time a Billiken had 20 or more in a game. With 820 rebounds, French is now 5th all-time in career rebounds, having just passed Roland Gray. He is 122 behind Dwayne Evans, currently in 4th place with 942, so that will have to wait until next season. He is about to enter the 1,000-point club, currently at 980 career points which places him 35th on the All Time list.

-Javonte Perkins could get FT% in play (at .784, needs .805 for 10th for juniors) if his percentage climbs a bit more. He has 425 points this season and needs 463 to reach the top 10  he is currently 22nd right behind Highmark. He has 36 3-pointers and needs 52 to make the junior top 10  he is currently 17th. All of these lists all looked out of reach until his conference season burst in production. His 33-point performance at St. Joe's was the 75th time in program history someone scored 30 or more in a game; 25 of those were for 34+ points, so he is tied in 26th for points in a game.

-Joshua Hightower won't play enough to hit the record books. But I organize this list by class.

-Demarius Jacobs is in the mix for the sophomore three-point FG percentage top 10. He needs to stay above .363 (Anthony Drejaj) and is currently at .382 (29-76). He was on track to bump Jordair Jett from the sophomore steals top 10 earlier in the season but that is now probably out of reach (has 26, needs 39).

-Fred Thatch has been shut down for the season.

-K.C. Hankton is also not in play for any sophomore records.

-Brandon Courtney isn't going to crack any sophomore lists but is somehow averaging more than Hankton, Hightower, Diarra, and Raboin (one appearance, one made 3-pointer).

-Yuri Collins now owns the freshman assist record at 160 and counting. He is now 4th all-time in a season for assists and the all-class season record is 235 (Jim Roder). Second all-time for any class is 193 (Charles Newberry), which is in play if we go on a run. Jett is third with 164 and Collins should top that in the next game. His 11 assists against EWU marked only the 13th time in SLU history a player has registered 11 or more in a game, and his 12 against VCU were the 14th occurrence and tied him with Roder, Bill Moulder, and Charles Newberry for 4th most in a single game. Collins is tied with Josh Fisher and Jeramy Biles in 4th for freshman steals, with 42. He should pass Jordair Jett (44) for 3rd this season. He could reach Goodwin's second place mark of 52 if we go on a run, but Larry Hughes' record of 69 steals is out of reach.

-Gibson Jimerson looked like a sure thing to break the all-time freshman mark for 3-point field goals (58, Kevin Lisch) and challenge 3-point FG percentage (.430, Marcus Bartley), along with all-class shooting lists. He finished 24-56, short of the volume needed to make the total top 10 but with enough attempts and a good enough percentage (.429) to finish second in freshman 3FG% to Bartley and eighth on the all-class list, tied with Austin McBroom. His scoring average of 10.8 fell just short of 10th (Kwamain Mitchell, 11.0), and his FT shooting percentage of .857 would've been second all time if he registered enough attempts and kept up that pace; he was only 6-7.

-Terrence Hargrove shot his way out of the top 10 in freshman FT% in the past few games. He's currently 24-36 for .667, now well behind the .733 he needs and short of the 50 attempts required. However, his increased minutes and production now have him in play for freshman FG% - he's tied with Brian Conklin in 10th, at .522. He needs 100 attempts to make it official and is at 90.

-Jimmy Bell isn't on pace for any freshman lists. He's .469 from the field on 79 attempts, so it looks like he's off pace there after threatening for a while.

-Madani Diarra has not played enough to be in play for any freshman marks.

Summary: French and Goodwin will be on a bunch of junior season lists, Collins and Jimerson will be on some freshman season lists, and French, Goodwin, and Collins will show up on all-class lists for a single season. We also have a few single-game performances that will be in the record books, French and Goodwin climbing career lists, and the all-time blocks record is ballooning.

Well, this is painful. I wanted to do this update prior to today's game to give some stakes about what records were being chased heading into postseason play. But instead, it's the season wrap-up. Without further ado, here's what the 2019-2020 Billikens have accomplished in the record books, with new marks in bold:

-Tay Weaver threatened to make the senior total 3-point FGs and 3FG% at times this season but didn't end up there. He needed 56 makes to crack the senior top 10 and needed to be over 40% and he finished 35-103 (.340).

-Jack Raboin finally got in the stat sheet on senior night, going 1-2 from the FT line and grabbing an offensive board and an assist. We will always remember him for his perfect 2018-2019 season, which he finished with a 1.000 shooting percentage.

-Jordan Goodwin is well into the 1,000 point club now, ending the season with 1,156 career points. He's #24 all time in scoring, most recently passing Bob Ferry (1,128). Had we played in another game, he would've passed Davell Roby (1,160), Brian Conklin (1,161), and probably Jim McLaughlin (1,170). Early next season, he'll enter the top 20, passing #20 Carl Johnson (1,187) and #19 Mike McCall (1,212) in the first few weeks. Barring anything unforeseen (like in this season) or an injury, Goodwin is on pace to be a top-10 all-time scorer. His scoring average of 15.5 fell a little behind the junior top 10; he needed to average 16.8. He did crack the junior total points list, though, and his 479 points this year are good for 7th all-time for juniors, knocking Reggie Bryant's 459 out. He had 321 rebounds, putting him 5th for juniors. His 10.4 RPG tie him in 8th on the junior list with Anthony Bonner and Hasahn French. He has 786 career rebounds, which is 8th all-time. He finished with 97 assists, needing 112 to hit the junior top 10. However, he passed LaTodd Johnson (59) for most steals among juniors, with 64. That mark also puts him 6th all-time in a season for any class, right behind his mark of 66 last season. He's now 2nd in career steals, with 182. He will top Bonner's 192 steals early next season. He is currently second in career MPG (34.5), sitting between Javon Bess (36.5) and Tommie Liddell (34.4).

-Hasahn French just entered the 1,000 point club and sits at 1,004 career points, good for 33rd all-time. He is the program's all-time blocked shots leader, with 202. With 77 blocks this season, he broke Ian Vouyoukas' junior blocks record of 55 and Willie Reed's all-class season mark of 73. French now has the 1st, 4th, and 6th (tie) place marks in the all-class top 10. His 7 blocks against Belmont are tied for the second most in a single game (Kelvin Henderson had 8 against Siena in 1979 and Willie Reed had 7 against Dayton in 2009), and his 5 against Seton Hall, GW, and George Mason are also among the 21 times in SLU history that a player has registered 5 or more blocks in a game. He had 312 rebounds, now 8th in the junior top 10 (crazy that only 9 rebounds separate Goodwin in 5th and French at 8th). His 10.4 RPG tie him in 8th on the junior list with Anthony Bonner and Jordan Goodwin. Summary: French and Goodwin are now making serious marks on the career records lists, along with the junior and all-class lists. French owns the blocks record by a mile and will build on it even more next season, and Goodwin will soon own the all-time steals record with a chance to put some distance between him and second next year. Points, rebounds, minutes - these guys are going to be everywhere in the record books. Perkins played his way into a couple marks. Collins destroyed the freshman assists mark and will be an all-time great assist man even after just one more season and is going to be on the class steals marks each year. Jimerson is a good enough shooter that he made a permanent mark in just ten games. Jacobs cracked a sophomore shooting list and Hargrove and Bell will put FG% in play each season. Next season will be a blast for record tracking.

Goodwin lost the last 7 games of his freshman year to...er...some BS and now has lost IMO at least 3 games off his junior year to COVID-19.

Imagine what Goody's stats would look like now with an extra 10 games played.

At his career averages per game he'd have

• An extra 124 points for a career total of 1,280 putting him 17th all-time and in great position to finish 5th all-time or potentially as high as 2nd.
• An extra 85 rebounds for a career total of 871 putting him 5th all-time and in great position to finish to finish 2nd all-time
• An extra 20 steals for a career total of 202 putting him already 1st all-time
• An extra 35 assists for a career total of 358 putting him 7th all-time and in position to finish 1st all-time (until Yuri passes him)

He'll should finish with a ridiculously impressive resume regardless, but man, I wish he had those extra 10 or more games.

I'd have to go back and look and it would take some time.

We've talked about this a little bit but most of the juco players we've had for 2 years have made huge leaps from junior to senior year. Some were quite good in their junior years, too, but that's more or less the trend. It seems as if Javonte's leap came over the course of this season, particularly as the A10 got underway. If he shows more improvement next season, look out.

Kind of a misnomer that SLU JUCOs make a big leap.  If you deep dive Jeffers was really the only one to do this.  The other good Jucos were good their JR year as well.  Some got better but for the most part stars were stars and role players were role players.  I really think Jeffers did this because we had a sr scorer playing his position his initial season.

Initial JUCO seasons Burns and Dobbs had the best scoring marks at 17.4.  Perkins looks to be 3rd on the list ahead of Footes, Dillard, Henderson & Love.

-Jimmy Bell also finished short on FG% - .471 from the field on 85 attempts. Bell finished 21st in Fr FT%, sandwiched between Bonner and Baniak.

 

 

Some last touches to Pistol's excellent work.  I have always kept the '10th player' on my list when someone exceeds his totals, moving him down to 11th, etc. So my lists are longer than those on the SLU website.

Our attendance average of 6,880 is an average of 10 less than the previous season and 8th best in the 12 years at Chaifetz.

Love didn't play till game 10 because of a back injury and didn't start until 6 games after that.  Had he not missed time his Jr season would have been the same as Perkins'.  Love had a huge scoring breakout game against Memphis just like Perkins did halfway through the conference season.  Love averaged over 18 ppg the final 8 games the Billikens played.  He did improve next season but he was already there, unlike Mo Jeffers who only scored in double figures a couple times his jr season.

I took one last lap around my stats records.  I have tracked SLU stats tracked Grawer's 88-89 team.  This season's Billikens have the highest Rebounds per Game average at 39.9 rpg of any team over that time span.  They topped the previous season's edition of 39.6 rpg  The record setting FT% comes as no surprise, lowering the bar from the previous season's team average.

I also have long used a Power Index that Sports Illustrated began using around 1990.  (I have not seen them use it in a decade or so.)  It takes into account all normal offense and defensive statistical parameters.  I still use it as it allows me to compare players from Grawer's teams to players on Ford's teams, etc.  Anyway, for what it is worth, Goodwin and French's seasons rank #2 and #3 on this Power Index list, trailing on Anthony Bonner's 1989-1990 season.  That is pretty good company to be in.  Just for context, Hughes' single season ranks #6 on this list.
