dlarry
So where do we go from here? If other states don’t follow California’s lead will they have any chance to compete? If you are a 5 star basketball player why would you go to UNC and play for free when you could go to UCLA and make money? I don’t see a lot of good coming from this for the non power conferences. Pistol
The NCAA will sue and this will go on for a while.
Cowboy
-is this another step in the erosion of the NCAA? could very well be, how the NCAA defends its turf on this one will be interesting to me, from a bball perspective the contract with CBS/Turner has through the 2025 tourney, but contracts don't always last
CBFan
The NCAA has already told California that schools that pay their athletes will not be able to participate in post season. A 5 star athlete that knows they are can't miss NBA players will not go for the money they will play for a national championship and move on to the NBA. We will find out soon enough what is important to these young people, getting paid or post season play. It will be pretty boring in California with none of their state teams that pay players sitting home in December, January, and March. The NCAA has the power to move the bowls out of California it would be something to see the Rose Bowl played somewhere else.
willie
I am all for players being payed but not for a free market. Whats to keep Phil Knight from legally buying his teams. Can't be good for a school like ours.

Athletes should be able to profit on their likeness and market themselves. It is a no-brainer. Why shouldn't Goodwin be able to sell shirts with his likeness on it? 3star_recruit
The California bill allows players to hire agents and have endorsement deals. So now the one/two and dones can get paid legally by shoe companies instead of cheating to do it. Adidas, who is being scapegoated right now by the NCAA, is loving this. Nike would prefer the status quo because the NCAA simply ignores payola where top Nike schools are concerned. Mid-majors are in the same position they've been in forever: signing the best 3 stars they can and getting the occasional 4 star.
slu72
Face it amateurism in college sports died a while ago. I can see the day where the P5/P7 all get together and say why do we need the NCAA anyways? Most of the conferences have negotiated their own TV contracts just like the professional leagues. The NCAA doesn't even govern the football championship, which is the biggest money maker for most of their member schools. The Dance as we know it will surely be the next target for these vultures.
