3star_recruit
All-conference players by height since 1995 Under 6'2 Kwamain Mitchell 5'10 2nd team, 3rd team (twice) Marque Perry 6'1 1st team, 2nd team Jordair Jett 6'1 1st team, 3rd team 6'2 - 6'5 Kevin Lisch 6'2 3rd team (twice) Justin Love 6'2 1st team Reggie Bryant 6'2 2nd team Maurice Jeffers 6'4 2nd team Tommie Liddell 6'4 2nd team Jeff Harris 6'5 3rd team Larry Hughes 6'5 1st team 6'6 and over Javon Bess 6'6 2nd team Dwayne Evans 6'6 1st team (twice) Brian Conklin 6'6 1st team Hasahn French 6'7 3rd team Ian Vouyoukas 6'10 1st team A few things stand out to me. 1) We've only had one all-conference performer over 6'7. 2) Post Claggett/Highmark, there have rarely been all-conference knock down shooters in a Billiken uniform. 3) Dwayne Evans is the biggest over-achiever of the last 25 years. He wasn't even considered a Top 10 player in the state of Illinois. Yet he is the only two-time 1st team all-conference player. JettFlight5
Evans is one of the counter-examples to the recruiting stars argument.

In fairness, I’m pretty sure Evans was a 3-star on a couple major services and had offers from at least Northwestern and maybe 1-2 other power five schools, so he wasn’t unheard of. The recruiting stars argument is a silly one. Overall, teams with more highly ranked players tend to be better than teams with lower ranked players. But there are countless examples of really good players who weren’t highly ranked and really good teams who don’t rely on top ranked players.
