SLU Women’s Soccer 2019

Recent SLU grad Maddie Pokorny was called up this weekend to the Chicago Red Stars of the NWSL. She has been playing well with their reserve team. Incoming SLU Freshman Karsen Kohl played for the Lou Fusz U19 team that made it to the National Championship game this month. (Their 16’s won the first National Title in program history. And, their 14’s also made it to the National Championship game)

SLU won 2-0 over SIUE last night.

 

They're also expected to win the conference again with four preseason all-conference players and they're hosting the A10 Tournament semifinals and final. From the article:

SLU returns seven starters and 10 additional players from its 2018 squad that posted a school-record 18 victories (18-4-1), went 10-0-0 in A-10 regular-season play, captured the conference tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Championship. The Billikens are anchored by two-time A-10 Defensive Player of the Year and All-America second-team selection, Alli Klug, who was also named to the Hermann Mac Trophy Watch List for the second year in a row. Also returning to the lineup are 2018 All-Conference selections Courtney Reimer and Hannah Friedrich, along with Alyssa Seitzer, Emma Farley, Annabelle Copeland and Evie Lavelle who combined for 28 goals and 23 assists. Mary Niehaus, a first-team selection in 2016 and 2017, is back between the posts for Saint Louis after missing the 2018 season due to injury....

The top eight teams will compete in the 2019 Atlantic 10 Women’s Soccer Championship. The opening rounds will be held on the campus of the higher seeds on Nov. 2 and 3. The top four teams will then advance to play at Saint Louis' Hermann Stadium in the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 8. The championship final will be held on Sunday, Nov. 10 with the winner earning the A-10’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. All rounds of the championship will be streamed on ESPN+.

-the Women play at Notre Dame tonight, ACC network launches today, I was thinking how cool that SLU would be on the new network on its first day, stupid thought, 4 hours on Duke men's basketball instead of live programming, just a guess but these programs will air 20 times each before Duke tips their season

Quietly this is not a good loss, 1-0 on a pk. ND is trying to finish a rebuild mode with a new coach (last year)  after a few mediocre seasons. Opportunity missed.

The women are not off to a strong start this season.

They dropped a 1-0 decision at Louisville this week. Their 2-1 win over Indiana St. in the rain was not well played. And they lost at Notre Dame as well. Offense and scoring have been issues at times as has been possession. Plenty of time to pick things up and turn things around.

Slow start for both the women and the men this season. The women losing 2-0 at Oklahoma St. this past weekend. At least Oklahoma St. was good enough to follow that up with a win over top 10 Penn St.

Both teams set up a gauntlet OOC schedule. I wouldn’t be too concerned with early losses.

I haven’t been encouraged with the level of play of either team to this point.  Making the NCAA’s is the expectation for both teams. At some point, you have to get results in games that matter, and avoid bad losses too. It’s a long season, plenty of time and opportunity for both. But, the level of play needs to improve if SLU has any soccer post season aspirations this year.

For what it’s worth, tonight was such a fun night to be at the game.

The women controlled the game, both in possession time and shots. Felt like we should’ve scored at least 2-3 goals.

We hit 3 posts; and just couldn’t find the back of the net. States’ keeper was solid. Cyclones had a late chance to win, but a good save put the game in OT.

We scored 2 minutes into overtime to win.

Other than the game, the atmosphere was great. 2,400 or so as announced attendance, and it felt like more.

Good student turnout, and my kids loved the human foosball, axe throwing (inflatable), and soccer darts; plus the giveaways.

Props to SLU and the ladies. It really is worth checking out.

SLU has opened the A-10 with some strong performances on the road, with wins 4-1, 4-0 Rhode Island and VCU. VCU had been considered to be their biggest conference challenge. These were after a 1-0 road win at Missouri St. 

What they didn’t do was many results vs the better non-conference teams. Iowa St. had lost 4-5 games (albeit to some good teams) prior to losing at SLU, and, was considered perhaps their weakest non-conference game.

Oklahoma St. is a top 25 team (2-0 road loss) 

Louisville has jumped into the top 25 (1-0 road loss)

Note Dame is improved but not a top 25 team, (1-0 road loss)

Purdue, (0-0 road draw) 

SLU’s RPI sits at 54 prior to their most recent win. The next closest A-10 RPI is VCU (who they defeated shortly after this update) 77 RPI.

Too bad they had to play every tough out of conference game on the road. Each game standing alone OK St, LVille, and ND, the results are probably as expected. However, it would have been nice to come away with one win or at least a tie. I wish we could have played at least 1 of those at home.

Yep. 

Unless, until SLU is able to schedule better (getting home games against the better teams) they will have to get a couple of results on the road against some of the better teams, in particular power 5 teams.

VCU has a 0-0 draw v 15 RPI Wake Forest, and a win v top 70 RPI UNC Wilmington, but not the strongest schedule. Even scheduling 100’s bs 200’s RPI level teams can make a difference. 

SLU lost a few key players from last year’s NCAA team but returned some too. It still seems to be the pattern of playing the better power 5 teams tough or close but losing 1-0 type games.

SLU is expected to win league title and conference tourney title. But we all know anything can and does happen during the season and post-season. 

Would like to see more of the better power 5 (and non) opponents at SLU moving forward. 

It’s encouraging that SLU has put up 4 goals in their last two league road games. A few wins can provide some confidence and more relaxed but aggressive play.

To get those games at SLU those teams have to be willing to come obviously
