He deserved it if he made the final roster. You know he busted his ass to do it.

Bess made the 20 man roster for training camp.  Helluva accomplishment.  There's a lot of former blue chippers fighting for a spot.

It is a pyramid, every time you go up one level, you become more visible to those making the choices, and the competition becomes tougher. However, if you do not make it to the training camp you won't make the team. Surviving every successive cut is an enormous achievement. All the best to Javon.

Awesome for Bess.

I do wonder how much room there is for him in New Orleans.  I assume the following guys are all almost locks for the final 15 man roster (I also think some teams end up carrying fewer than 15 sometimes depending on their cap situation, etc.): Alexander-Walker, Ball, Favors, Hart, Hayes, Holiday, Ingram, Jackson, Miller, Moore, Okafor, Reddick, Williams and Zion.  That's 14 players maybe injuries open up another spot or two, but you may be looking at Bess competing with 6 other guys for 1 spot.

i think what javon has going for him is his desire to play defense and rebound and his ability to guard bigger players.    i bet the pelicans are looking at him as the utility guy that can come in and guard anyone but the big burly center.   i dont think he is a lock to make the roster yet, but i think he has a chance.

Miller tore his achilles and is out for the year.  Two others on the list of 20 have two way contracts, so the odds are a little better than 6:1.

I bet Bess is perfect for a team before the last cut who can test the starters get them ready for world class D and then cut for lack of offense compared to those above him on the depth chart.

His defense is exactly why I would want him at the end of my bench.

The 12th man never gets in the game anyway. If I was a coach I wouldn’t care about the 11th and 12th guys offensive ability. I’d want guys who can defend. You could use them as a defensive stopper or just as a practice player.

Either way I think a defensive specialist makes perfect sense for the 12th guy.

Throwing this on the Bess thread, only because it is related to Pro Ball and not worth a new thread.  Very interesting experimental rule.

How bizarre and stupid.

Just some more love for Javon.  This is a 5 minute interview from Pelicans media.  He talks getting to know the guys, what he sees his roles as, conditioning, and getting to know the guys.  I laughed at him calling Zion a kid.  He also says he liked Oceana on Bourbon St.

Just fun to watch one of our guys on this stage.  I sincerely hope he can eke his way on to a roster this year.  I think chances aren't great for him to make the final cut in New Orleans this year, but I know he'll keep grinding.  Hope someone notices.

Good news. This led me to checking the NBA shop website here https://store.nba.com/new-orleans-pelicans/mens-new-orleans-pelicans-nike-red-custom-swingman-jersey-statement-edition/t-92693052+p-256689134950+z-8-1538077702 and from the drop down list of players we can choose Javon as one!

Now just waiting until I can buy a cheap jersey of his from China

Don’t do that. Buy the real deal, they gave a Billiken a shot.

I heard the interview and I think Bess is taking the right approach for being retained in the team. This does not mean he will make it, but I think he has a very good chance. I think he knows and recognizes that there are a lot of people there who shoot better than he does. What he does well is defense, and besides that he is a real nice guy that will not create any problems and wait to be called to play when they need him. He is definitely not a trouble maker, that counts as a desirable characteristic in a team. The other players seem to like him.

Would you say it's 50/50?
