Ford did something right to change Isabell’s game.  Had to be coaching as Isabell’s play sure changed for the better from the beginning of the year.  Coaching also seemed to help Bess become a better player from his arrival at SLU.   And Fords teams each year have never quit, played hard and improved from the start of each year - and have had success despite losing our 3 guys from S2, Goodwin for 1/2 that year, Santos and Gordon. Ford is not the game coach that Spoon and RM were but you are also ignoring the positives of CF.

Not according to Isabell.  Coach Ford didn't give up on him but Isabell had to get right on his own:

https://www.stltoday.com/sports/college/slu/perseverance-pays-off-for-isabell-after-rough-transition-to-slu/article_a8597bcf-5e4d-5806-9f45-7f836b175728.html

Hoping to finish his career with something big, he spent the first two-thirds of his senior year struggling and worrying and hoping.

“It was off-the-court stuff more than anything,” Isabell said on the floor at Barclays Center after SLU won the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament. “I had people giving up on me, a tough breakup, my grandpa about to have heart surgery. I just needed to put my mind somewhere else.

“My mind wasn’t on basketball at the time. I was worried about my girlfriend in Philly, my grandpa, my mom. I watch film and I just wasn’t myself. I wasn’t even into the game. I was thinking about everything else.”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What Coach Ford has done right is recruiting.  He gave talented, experienced players like Bess and Isabell a chance to play a lot, and they took care of the rest.

Players that rarely play as freshmen are always in danger of losing their spot to a new recurit the following year.  For example, if Weaver takes away Jacobs' opportunity, that's just the way it goes.  "Wasted scholarships" are built into the system.

Agree with this. Just look at the high number of transfers every year. I'd say if two on our current roster don't get many minutes this year they'll enter the Portal. It's why coaches never stop recruiting.  For those leaving it likely means they'll end up at a lower mid major where they will play instead of sit.

People forget that Thatch was the second best hs player in the state, and he averaged 4 points a game, and played 20 mpg because he played stellar defense in his limited time.

It is foolish to expect a lesser freshman who does not have a chiseled profile to put up better numbers because we all want it to happen.

High level D1 play chews up most freshmen and spits them out in tatters. Ford has found three recruits who can impose their will playing defense to this point. Here is hoping we have two new fresh who can do the same, in Hargrove and Collins. If this proves out, we may be able to pop higher than projected.

To my way of thinking, Fred is a major key to this year's team. He avg'd like 24 ppg in HS as I recall, yet struggled to score his FR year. Some of that was probably due to his deference to give up shots to the older guys. I expect he'll try to insert himself more into the offense this year. Can't say he struggled with his shots as it seems he never took that many anyways.

I don't believe there are any other RM's. If Rick had Coach K's roster every year for the last 30 he'd have 22 National Championships with 8 additional final 4's. Every NCAA basketball award would be named the Majerus Award.

I agree assuming all of the players on the roster bought in.  The issue would be that I don't think that most of the kids on Coach K's roster would ever stick around to play for Majerus.  He had the reputation of being a very tough coach and rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.

Example: it was reported that Majerus made Mike McCall Jr. spend countless hours practicing getting around screens until he had it perfect.  Can you imagine a college freshman Kyrie Irving doing that?  He'd probably transfer after 10 minutes.

Shelti.

It's not foolish at all.  In fact, I may be most concerned about Thatch if his shot doesn't fall consistently this year.  My concern is NOT that Thatch is not a good basketball player with offensive skills but instead my concern is how he plays with the other 4 on the court.  We don't need 3 pointers from Thatch - though that would be nice -- but we do need mid-range shots from him.   The problem Thatch has is that Goodwin has similar skills to him -- they are both scorers/slashers as opposed to shooters - and Goodwin appears to be higher on Coach Ford's list than Thatch.   Also, his problem is that French's range is 6' foot so he cannot/doesn't draw his man out to the perimeter like Cody Elis would do to make room for Thatch.   And if Yuri gets minutes at the PG spot (and is not a shooter either), then we will need more help at shooting.   And if we need another big on the court help out french, then because I am not confident that either of our 7 footer or Hankton will provide much perimeter play, then Thatch's skills (despite his chiseled profile and high school accomplishments) simply won't mesh nearly as well with the above lineup (and not saying my lineup above is set in stone) as that of a lesser Freshman such as Jamison (a shooter) and/or another new player/guard such as Weaver (also a shooter).  Thatch's defense and our lack of other options allowed him to play last year - and Bess made up for his lack of offensive output.   Being a defensive specialist will always get you playing time, but usually not 30 minutes per game.

Don’t expect much from Yuri next year.

Players expected to contribute significantly are Hargrove, Perkins and Jimmerson.

Each Big is 50/50

And your earlier post that Perkins has not yet joined the team was to agitate this Board?   Now Perkins is a significant contributor?   Doesn't Perkins have to join the team to contribute?

Have you seen Yuri play?

I have at the high school playoffs, he can pass, defend shoot free throws really well.

Biggest question will be outside shooting in D1.

Yurimania will set in around January. He'll be the straw that stirs the drink.

I just confirmed and purchased my 4 season tickets for the lower bowl just a minute ago.

I am so excited to be in section 101.

FYI, for those that are changing season ticket seats do not have to wait for the September phone call as I was told you can make the change now if you call the ticket office.

CBfan, Ford hands playing time out first and foremost based on defense.

If Thatch loses playing time rather than gaining time, that means one of the freshman has a better marginal offense addition than Thatch’s marginal defense subtraction. Outside of times when we face a stifling zone, I don’t forecast this happening much.

That's not true.  Defense is extremely important, but at the end of the day, so is scoring.   If you can score, CF will find time for you.

We need a mix of players at all times on the court.   If a guy won't shoot, then defenses are quick to pick up on this (especially in conference play).   I don't expect offense to be a problem for Thatch --but our team will struggle if: player 1 only plays defense, player 2 can only slash to the basket, player 3 can only shoot but not play defense, player 4 can only rebound...

You can only change to a specific seat if it is non renewed and that will be after 8/15.  Now if you want a seat that nobody has owned then yes you can change anytime.

Check out 3 of the starting PG's in the final four, all Yuri sized or smaller. Yurimania is for real. In Ford I trust,  "he's an old school PG."

That is what happened then, thank you.

Ridiculous comparison. Thatch had a much harder transition. His game in high school was basically as an inside player, which he could frequently physically  dominate his opponent. At the college level, Fred had to develop more of a perimeter oriented game, something which he is still learning. Yuri’s game is built on quickness, ball handling, passing, and game awareness. All which should translate nicely at the next level.

It's kind of disappointing to hear a lot of people cutting on Ford. 3rd year Dancing w/a depleted roster. When he was hired many of us thought this would take 5 years. The guy can recruit, motivate, and commit fully to a program. Time to appreciate what he does rather than compare him to Rick, who I loved, and get behind him fully.
