2019-20 Season

Recommended Posts

I know we shouldn’t draw conclusions from snippets of social media, but our guys all seem to genuinely like each other. From a cohesion of personality standpoint, it seems like the guys are meshing really well together.  In particular, Hargrove seems like a great kid and already a super teammate.  I think he’s gonna be remembered as a Billiken great by fans after he’s done at SLU.

will someone explain the jimerson defense fear?   i have never read he is not an adequate defender.  why the almost panic like posts?

Because he's a white shooter, snobviously.

This is nice to an extent.  More shots and better information will help a little.  However it won't help make a poor shooter good as it does nothing to correct the technique/form that generally makes a poor shooter a poor shooter.

I did this last year for the newcomers -

So I'll do it again for these guys. I'll also add Weaver, since it appears he's wearing the #2 that Isabell wore last season.

1 - Collins is inheriting D.J. Foreman's number without giving it a break. Before Foreman, in reverse order, the 1 jersey was worn by Milik Yarbrough (but only as a sophomore; he wore 4 as a freshman), Grandy Glaze, Danny Brown (sophomore-senior seasons), and Tom Frericks. Since rosters are only available prior to 1986-1987, it looks like Frericks was the firs to wear it after at least 15 seasons. I like this move from a freshman hometown PG. Power move. It feels right with Collins in a way that it didn't for any of our previous number 1s, although I tend to prefer guards wearing lower numbers and bigs wearing higher ones.

2 - Two grad transfers in a row grabbed this one, and it'd be nice if Weaver could build on Isabell's single-season luck and be an A10 Tournament star, getting us to another Dance. Before Isabell, this number was worn by Miles Reynolds, Ty Graves (but never in games, obviously), board favorite Austin McBroom, Anthony Mitchell, and Wendell Bennett.

3 - Another number staying in circulation, and Perkins has big shoes to fill after Javon Bess. Before Bess, it was another two-year transfer, Ash Yacoubou. Kwamain Mitchell wore it before Ash, and you have to go back to Justin Love before him. Only one of these players averaged fewer than 10 points in any season: Yacoubou scored 9.1 PPG his junior year. This is a high-performance number. Hopefully Perkins is up to the task.

22 - Hargrove claims this number from its previous owner, Hasahn French, who wore it his freshman year (he's 11 now - how many of you even noticed the change?). Going backward from French, we've got Grant Hollander, Austin Eagleton (freshman year; he wore 24 as a junior), Ian Mooney (sophomore year; he wore 24 as a freshman), Phil Hunt, Virgil Cobbin, Derek Falb, McGlother Irvin, and Jorge Wallace. It's an unusual history in that it's been worn a lot, mostly by walk-ons, mostly by locals, and mostly by guys who didn't play their entire careers at SLU.

24 - Jimerson didn't let this one lie dormant for long. Maybe Ingvi just left a bunch of gear around and he wanted a rightful claim to it. Aaron Hines wore this one before Ingvi, and Cody Ellis was the last scholarship player before him to wear it. But in this century, this number mostly has a history of being worn with walk-ons: Austin Eagleton (junior year; he wore 22 as a freshman), Kevin Shortal, and my research last year says that Ian Mooney wore it as a freshman before Phil Hunt graduated and he switched to 22. Prior to that season, it was used (along with 10) as a blood jersey, so we always had nameless 10 and 24 practice/game jerseys. Prior to those days, it was worn by Larry Simmons, Carlos Skinner, and Roland Gray.

32 - Bell is preceded by Mike Crawford with this number. Before him, it was used by Cory Remekun, Luke Meyer, Corey Frazier, Scott Highmark, Kevin Footes, and Monroe Douglass. That's a pretty solid history, as SLU jersey numbers go.

35 - This one got two seasons off between Reggie Agbeko and Madani Diarra. Before Reggie, you have to go all the way back to Chris Heinrich and before Heinrich, you have to go back to the late 1980s, when it was worn by Todd Starks for his senior season and Ramon Trice before him.

Fun fact: Last season appears to be the only time SLU's roster featured numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 simultaneously.

The other part of the stats page should have all the #"S and their users like you've done last 2 years.

So with Weaver in the fold, who do you think will hit the most 3s this season?  Weaver the 3 point specialist with a Wiz C rating, or Gibson, a Wiz A+ shooter in high school, or Perkins a Wiz A+ shooter at JC level, or does Thatch find his shot or Goodwin find his inner shooter?

My guess is that Perkins will hit the most, Weaver will attempt the most, and Jimerson will have the highest percentage of makes.

Rothstein irritates me enough that I can't follow him ("Stay hungry, stay humble") but those tweets show that he knows the league well. I'd rearrange a few spots in my rankings - St. Joe's might end up being worse than any of the teams below them, for example - but these are all pretty spot-on.

Anyone, please provide updates on OOC schedule. So far it looks like KSU in KC, Seton Hall at the Fetz, SIU at the Fetz, BC at BC,  and that's all I got. Am sure I've missed some posts about other games, but I can't find them. Thanks.
