brianstl
If there is any justice in the Seven Kingdoms, Jaime gets the Iron Throne. He is the only one on the show that sacrificed his honor to save the realm and he never tried to claim glory for the act. That selfless act destroyed his concept of self, made him an object of scorn and contributed to turning him into a monster. Season one gave us a man as low and depraved as possible. Since then his has been a story of redemption.
SShoe
If the show wants to end on a happy note, either Danaryeas or Snow take the throne. If it wants to end based on the show's at least initial premise of turning fantasy storylines upside down, it should be one of the behind the scenes schemers like Varys. If you think about it GOT is like a modern redo of Shakespeare's tragedies (everyone dies) with high tech, dragons, and less stress on fancy language. You obviously won't catch up in time for the premiere, but it is a good show (albeit, I think a little overrated - but still a good show). I started watching a year ago and just recently got caught up. While there are obvious benefits of binge watching, the downside of not being able to talk to people about what you are seeing and predicting what happens next is significant. To help with this and just to understand who everybody is, I found myself reading the wikipedia summary of the previous episode before I started the next show. The wife & I caught up from scratch last year - thank you SLC Library & retro Netflix. never watch more than 2 episodes at a time. Watch it with your woman - there will be interesting discussions. slu72
As an older and late comer fan of GOT, I'll say this about it: it's a little bit of soft porn, it's compelling once you get involved w/ the characters, it's brutal ( close your eyes if you don't like extreme violence and bloodshed, I don't), but it's also a pretty good political drama that somewhat mirrors our modern world. The shifting alliances and character arcs are what makes it much see TV. I always sign on for two months of HBO while it's on. For the past two weeks I've been going back and watching on Demand and watching what the aficionados are saying are the most critical episodes. I would recommend to newbies to watch the whole first season as that sets up the entire drama. It's good vs evil, but ar times it's hard to tell who's good and who's evil. As for who ultimately wins, I'm going w/Bran. He's got a power, primarily intelligence, that's greater than every other major character including the dragons. And you should never never mess with the 3 eyed raven. Go Bran, kick their arses! RiseOfTheBillikens likes this
dlarry
OK....I don’t have HBO so I haven’t seen an episode. I wish I watched it because billions of people can’t be wrong, plus I enjoy the water cooler talk. Here is my question...I see that you can place bets on who takes the throne but isn’t this show based on a book series? Couldn't people read the cliff notes, place a bet on who gets the throne and collect their winnings?

The show’s plot line passed where the books stopped 2 seasons ago.
Old guy
dlarry I will tell you two totally free ways of getting up to date with GOT: 1. Go to the public library and take out the DVDs for each series in order. 2. Go to the public library and take out the books (read them too). The books are much better in terms of the richness of details they provide. The DVD's are better for the special effects. It is not the same to read "the dragons burned the army into a pile of cinders" and actually watch it being done.

Old guy
Not this time, George R. Martin got caught in the filming of the series (which I would guess made a lot more money for him than the books had). I do not think there is any information as to the contractual requirements signed between Martin and HBO. At least the last couple of seasons of the series have gone beyond the book. Some differences were evident already between the book and the series before the last two seasons were filmed, for example the last book in the series introduced a new Targaryan heir to the throne which is not included in the series. It will be interesting to see how Martin deals with the differences when he writes the final books. Will he follow the series plot for the last two seasons or will the book plot deviate from that of the series? We will have to wait and see.
