I think the episodes this season are still pretty good when you take them as stand alone episodes.  They just have been real disappointing when it comes to fitting into the larger story, with the exception of episode 2.  A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was one of the best episodes of any season.

Agreed. One of my favorites of the series.

I think cersei death by having the red keep collapse on her has obvious symbolism. She always said it would never fall and everything she built and worked for overwhelming them coming down on top of her. But ya it wasn't the most entertaining death.

My money is on Arya killing Dany now. I don't know how they wrap this up in one episode. Going to be interesting.

I don't get why everyone is trying to figure out what the white horse meant?  D and D might try to make it something, but it shouldn't be anything special.  People having them on the show isn't a rare thing.  Dany had Silver, Jaime had one, Ned had one, Rob had one, Renly had one, Lyanna had one, Rickon had one, Sansa had one and Arya had one earlier.

Have you seen some of the tweets complaining about the show? There's a ton of "It's still real to me dammit" people out there.

I follow a lot of people who live tweet the show. Most people just react and make jokes. I posted my reaction on here because I was bored waiting for people to join my conference call. It would not surprise me, however, to know that there are a lot of people out there who take it too seriously, like everything else in life.

My thoughts exactly. The decision to have seasons 7 and 8 combined 13 episodes was a really dumb move. However, once you acknowledge and accept it, I think they're doing a pretty good job.

That was the best episode of tv I've ever watched just from a thriller/action standpoint. Absolutely wild.

I agree with this, and with brianstl on the episodes being thrilling TV from a standalone sense. The cinematography, sound, CGI, acting, etc., have been out of this world. The writing... well...

I'm in the camp that thought the Dany-mad queen heel turn didn't really make sense. It could have, if they would have set it up more, but I guess there wasn't really time to show her descent into madness. The closest they came on this was her (correct) paranoia about Sansa, her stupidly just going down to King's Landing like, the day after losing half her army, and her anger at losing another dragon and Missandei.

She was temperamental the whole time but had the eunuch to slow her roll.

This is my biggest problem. Dany's previous violent acts were not demonstrating how "temperamental" she was. Varys was not "slowing her roll", he wanted her on the Thone up until last week. Then, all of the sudden he starts looking into the camera with crazy foresight like, "you guys know what they say about Targaryens and coins.........." Wait, what? He then attempts to poison her before she's done anything remotely "mad".

They spent 7 season building her into a heroic figure. We were supposed to cheer her burning the slave masters, killing the Dothraki leaders, watching her brother die, etc. Those scenes were never intended for us to be like, "Oh yikes, she's kind of losing it a bit here." Now the writers are pointing back at those scenes and cloaking them in "foreshadowing". Even burning the Tarlys, who were given the choice to kneel or be killed, is completely justified in the context of the show, and is nothing Jon, Ned, or Robb haven't done themselves in prior seasons. There has been zero character development which would lead her to burn thousands of women and children. None. She goes from a 1 on the villain scale to a 10 in one scene -- after she's won the war and everyone has surrendered. "She looks at the Red Keep and snaps" is piss-poor writing, because they wanted to wrap-up the series as quickly as possible. GRRM told them this Mad Queen arc was coming in the books, but they chose to ignore it before cramming the ENTIRE THING into the penultimate episode. It's lazy.

Not to mention, it makes both Jon and Tyrion look like dopes as well. Why didn't they see this coming? It was so "obvious" to the audience. Nope, must've missed those signs as well. Now you're responsible for all those deaths. Good work, team. Let's just execute her and end the series 😬

The good:

Cleganebowl lived up to the hype imo. No better way for Sandor to go out than facing his largest fear while accomplishing his life's goal.

I laughed when Qyburn died. Hilarious cosmically fitting death. Also, Cersei just quietly leaving The Hound/The Mountain to it like "uhhh ... this doesn't seem to have to do with me..."

I do love me some dragon-induced destruction. This episode was visually stunning. Agree with everyone who said it was a great episode of TV from an action standpoint.

Musings:

Is that *really* how Cersei dies? I'm surprised if so. Still think there is a chance that Jamie saves her life by sacrificing his own body so she won't be crushed. I never believe someone is dead on TV unless they physically show them dying. This is Game of Thrones. Would they really miss a chance to show one of the most-hated villains of all time be gratuitously crushed?

Are we done with Sansa/Bran/Brienne/everyone else in the North??

Someone on Twitter said something to the effect of "Bran called a horse Uber for Arya." I like the idea that Bran warged into that horse to get Arya safely out of the city.

Someone else posted this re: how Jon Snow felt when Dany started torching everything:

image.jpeg.e0e98dd3e353565550b49c8571615d81.jpeg

Cleganebowl was epic. The dragon flying past them on the steps was perhaps the best shot of the entire series. Let's give a hand to Drogon, as well. Must've been low-key operating at 10% before last week. Scorpions? What scorpions? Qyburn's death was perfect.

The scene between Jaime and Tyrion in the tent was a nice conclusion for the two. I think Jaime's arc would have a made more sense if Brienne was killed in the Battle of Winterfell, but whatever. Not everyone gets a complete turnaround. The fight scene with Euron was awful. "I'm the man who killed Jaime Lannister" has to be one of the worst lines of the show.

I think Sansa, Bran, and co. have to roll south for the finale. To put Dany on trial or something. Let's keep getting weird. Bring Yara, Bronn, the whole gang. Howland Reed will show up to prove Jon = Aegon once and for all.

Would have loved the "Bran sent the horse" angle. Show the horse's eyes glossed over, or cut from Bran, something. (Please, please, do something with Bran).

I get everyone being mad about Danyrs. It is a stupid twist. But, I think I am more bothered by the quickness of the whole White-walker story line. I mean, the books and show started with them killing a guy. They hung over the entire series as this major apocalypse. Then they attack, and apparently they can’t even take Winterfell? Theon Greyjoy took Winterfell, with like 30 men. It just seems like poor story telling.

I thought since very early in the show that Dany was going to go mad queen, so that didn’t bother me.  They did really rush it though.

Nope, this is a great, well thought and written story. What you have with the 7th and final episode of the series, is a script written by folks given the order from up above to close all loose ends and terminate the series. This is what they have done. This is most likely not the way George Martin would have ended it. When you have a huge cast of characters each one well detailed, you cannot close the series like they have without taking a lot of abrupt short cuts. Thank you ATT.

The show is still good but it has gotten progressively worse without source material to crib off of.  GOT is such a phenomenon that I think they could have done 20 seasons and still have been entertaining.

That was definitely a highlight for me - it was really well done but pretty much overshadowed by everything else going on.

I just didn't get Jaime saying he never cared about the innocent citizens of King's Landing. His care for them is what ruined his life by making Jaime the King Slayer.  That was just awful writing.

Yep. Terrible terrible writing. He's always harped on how he killed the mad king to save all the innocents in king landing. But now all of a sudden he doesn't care? That line annoyed the hell out of me.

As an older and late comer fan of GOT, I'll say this about it: it's a little bit of soft porn, it's compelling once you get involved w/ the characters, it's brutal ( close your eyes if you don't like extreme violence and bloodshed, I don't), but it's also a pretty good political drama that somewhat mirrors our modern world. The shifting alliances and character arcs are what makes it much see TV. I always sign on for two months of HBO while it's on. For the past two weeks I've been going back and watching on Demand and watching what the aficionados are saying are the most critical episodes.  I would recommend to newbies to watch the whole first season as that sets up the entire drama. It's good vs evil, but ar times it's hard to tell who's good and who's evil. As for who ultimately wins, I'm going w/Bran. He's got a power, primarily intelligence, that's greater than every other major character including the dragons. And you should never never mess with the 3 eyed raven. Go Bran, kick their arses!

I nailed it on 04/12. I think Old Guy said no way.

Wrapped up way too nice.  Another 6 episodes to flesh this out and it would have been fine.

I liked how it ended up, decent end to the story.  Just didn't like how they got there.

I read the other day that HBO wanted the last two seasons to be 10 episodes each.  D&D told them they only needed the 13 to wrap it up.

Ya I heard hbo wanted to do 10 seasons of 10 episodes. Extremely disappointed it wasn't given the time it deserves. D&D writing for star wars is the reason I heard they cut it short. So dumb.

Think the ending was good. Not happy with how it got there but overall satisfied with how things ended. Drogon saved westeros which is kind of funny. Ready for the Jon & Tormund spin off.

If you loved the show and you thought Benioff and Weiss added to the storytelling, don’t read the script for the series finale. It somehow is 1000 times worse than the episode itself. The actors and the editors should get lifetime achievement awards for making the finale sort of redeemable.

The end of the series is the end of the series. If you were to look at it as if it was happening in real life, the real outcome would have little to do with who got it, the real outcome would be dependent upon what the guy who got it did with it after he got it. That is not part of the series, the series just had to end at some point, period.
