Demarius Jacobs

Now with the season over its time to look to the future. Here is someone we recruited and I seem to remember when we got him more than a few on Billikens.com seemed pleased with the signing. The film that some posted here seemed to bare the positive threads out. Now this season he would have to get a very large incomplete grade as he rarely was seen in games. I only got to see in person the Butler game and I do think he made an appearance. I know a lot of his MIA was due to injury. I was just wondering if anyone who contributes and was able to see any of Jacobs has an opinion. Will he have a chance to contribute or should Jacobs or SLU move on?

Holy fuok. We aren't doing this already.

Lets wait for the kid to make the announcement if there even is one.  Jacobs has a good chance to play next season if he works hard and improves.  He looked like he was having fun at the tournaments and hopefully visualized himself in that role next season.

Agreed.  He looked really engaged.  I’m hopeful he puts in the work this summer and plays meaningful minutes next year.

Before this thread gets much longer, I've got a question.  Coach Ford prefers to play no more than 8 guys.  On a roster of 13, that means 2 guys will get spot minutes and 3 guys won't play at all.  Are you saying 3 guys should transfer every year?

SLU has had thin rosters and so the result is a small rotation.

Ford's last Oklahoma State team had 10 guys average 10 or more minutes per game.  If you have a full roster of talented players I think Ford will use a larger rotation than we've seen.

Jacobs showed us all at billikens madness incredible athleticism.   It has been my opinion thats jacobs limited playing time was likely due to his mental approach.   Once he gets past that i believe he can be a very good billiken contributor.

The obsession with Freshman not playing and assuming they'll transfer is weird.

I thinks it’s more of a reaction to what’s happening.  Players are getting less patient and expect to play right away.  Generally speaking, they’re are more willing to look to transfer if they don’t get playing time they think they’re entitled to. I’m not saying this specifically about Jacobs, but in general about players these days.

I conceded your point in my original post.  8 guys that log most of the minutes, 2 guys that play spot minutes.  You still have 3 guys that don't play.  I don't think this is grounds for parting ways, as Schasz seems to be alluding to.  It depends on what the player wants.  Is he OK with waiting his turn?

J.Good (34 mpg) and Isabell (33 mpg) didn't sit or get in foul trouble much and were tasked with running the offense - which is a tall order (albeit one Goodwin took on and Yuri could take on to some extent). Add in an injury or two at a time when he's on a really steep learning curve, while Thatch wasn't injured and was able to adjust to the college game faster, and a stud 4-star freshman who the coaching staff was prioritizing in terms of figuring out how to fit them in for the first half of the season, and it's not surprising that Jacobs wouldn't see a lot of court time.

With their size and associated fatigue and simply banging around in the paint getting more fouls (and Foreman sometimes frustrating him), Ford needed a big body to provide more relief for French and Foreman - hence Hankton getting more minutes.

I suppose to some extent these are all excuses, but I don't see his season as some failure or signal that he should leave. Actually seems like a pretty typical freshman year for the #2 or 3 recruit on a roster with upperclassmen getting a lot of minutes.

Mike Crawford played very little as a freshman (along with Reggie Agbeko) on a team that had a lot of experience in the upper classes, but he (and Reggie) stuck it out, and by the time he was a senior, he was the one who was counted on.

Demarius Jacobs (along with KC Hankton) can experience a similar career arc.  If they have a good relationship with their teammates and coaches and appreciate the personal growth in life that they're experiencing, it can be worthwhile for little-used younger players to persevere.  Let's try to encourage that kind of thinking.

Too many fans try to expect too much of freshmen (and sophomores, sometimes).

Sorry but I don't live in the Lou and only went to the Butler game this season. Really don't think I was trying to allude to anything other than getting discussion about Jacobs for next season. Since I live in Florida I appreciate reading Billikens.com for first hand info from regulars like you. My impression of what I saw during recruiting Jacobs was that he appeared to be someone with decent athleticism. I also know that alone does not guarantee him or anyone else minutes...he has to earn them. It would be my hope that he has a great summer and comes back to SLU to compete for minutes.

You could be right but I think it was the injury more than anything.

Let's keep it real.  There's a different expectation between fans and players when it comes to minutes.  Fans want a loaded roster with competition at every spot and the ones that lose out should be happy until they get their turn.  I would assume Jacobs was told there would be a role available if he earned it.  For whatever reason he didn't get a lot of minutes this year.  Everyone in this forum would agree the team needs more skilled offensive players.  Jimerson,  Perkins,  Hargrove are coming in to help in that area.  Yuri as a facilitator.  With the potential of adding even more players it is possible Jacobs could be the odd man out.  There could be a couple players not getting minutes they were told would be available if Ford continues to play 8-9.  So it's not always an issue of feeling entitled,  many players just want the chance they were told they would be given.  If they don't receive it...it's sometimes best for both parties to part ways.

The true primary reason Jacobs didn't play — and which may have contributed to his injury, as well — this season is that he physically isn't ready.  He's 6'2" and 175 lbs.  At this level, he's overmatched.  He needs to put on 15 (or more) pounds of muscle and learn the defensive techniques necessary to be able to play.

Even if he were to transfer for the chance at more playing time, unless he's willing to descend in level (below mid-major), the same prerequisites would apply.  But he can get the court time at SLU, once he's physically ready.

In all seriousness, every recruit we sign  is followed by excitement, kind comments and film clips which make the kid look really good.

But we seem to be short of PG and 2 guards - which is what he plays. Thatch will likely play more 2 guard than 3 guard - bc of our new depth at the 3 but Thatch will need to shoot well. We will also have to see how Yuri does and where he and/or Goodwin plays as I dont see Thatch playing the 2. Minutes appear available if Ford has confidence in him and doesnt bring in another guard. So far, things appear good for him as Ford appears to be using his last 3 scholarships more for Forwards than Guards.

I believe thatch and jacobs and Goodwin and colllins will play 1 and 2.   3 and 4 to be covered by perkins, hargrove, jimerson, hankton and TBA  5 will be manned by french, bell and TBA

That leaves one more TBA .   If my druthers the final TBA would be a 5/4

^He doesn't need 15 or more pounds. You can perform or even dominate at this level at 6'2" 175

But yeah, developing defensive skills/technique is probably the biggest factor.

You could be right, but I question it.  5'11" and 175 I would agree, but with the additional height there requires more mass to go along with it.  I'd prefer more like 190 or 195 on 6'2".  But I'm just guessing.

Maybe. But that’s 4 guys at the 1 and 2 and none a sharpshooter. Minutes are plenty for defensive specialists and for sharpshooters. Maybe Jimerson can play the 2 w Hargrove/Perkins at the 3.  I just prefer the 2 guard as the team’s best perimeter shooter.

Imo playing jimerson or hargrove or perkins as the second guard will likely result in a defensive problem.

You are assuming  none of the guards i project will improve as shooters.
