The A10 blog is out with their way to early picks for next season:

VCU, Dayton, Davidson, St B's, Duquesne, RI, SLU and the rest. 7th sounds about right where most of us have the Bills.

Reading thru it gives one a good idea of how much talent the league has returning. Every team above appears to be stacked w/ experienced and talented players. Take VCU for example; they bring back 98% of their scoring while return 40%. Am sure all 6 teams ahead of us probably return 80% or better of their ppg. Even if we play lights out D, doubtful given the FR inexperience, we have got to find a way to turbo charge our offense.

Looking at the conference's outgoing transfers so far this season, I don't think I'd adjust my tiers at all. Most are coming from mid-to-bottom teams and if they're coming from better teams, they weren't major contributors.

Updated based on transfers:

Solid:

VCU - Year three under Mike Rhoades. The team that just won the A10 with a 16-2 record graduates two guys who averaged less than 3 points combined. They'll have a 5-man senior class led by their top two scorers, Marcus Evans and De'Riante Jenkins. There's a drop-off after the top four, but they play a 9-man rotation and they'll all be back unless someone transfers unexpectedly and they don't have any yet. They've got one guy signed and no scholarships to give. This is basically the same team next season with another year of experience.

Davidson - Year 31 under Bob McKillop, who just signed a five-year contract extension. They only graduate Nathan Ekwu, the guy just outside the 6-man rotation. Assuming Kellan Grady returns - and it looks like he will, as he went from potential NBA first rounder to disappearing from mock drafts altogether - they keep the entire 6-man rotation intact, including Grady and CPOY Jon Axel Gudmundsson. Dusan Kovacevic announced he's transferring; he'll be a senior and immediately eligible. He sat out 2015-2016 with an injury, had a season-ending leg injury in early 2017 and then had knee surgery in January 2018 so he's never played much and won't be a big loss. They've got one commitment and two scholarships to give, which is pretty typical for a program that's about half international players who are more likely to sign in the spring. Assuming Grady returns and plays more consistently, Davidson will be even better next season.

Dayton - Year three under Anthony Grant. UD had a losing record in his first season and made the leap to 21 wins and an NIT appearance in year two. They graduate Josh Cunningham but Obi Toppin is talking like he's going to return and put off the NBA for another year. They've also got four transfers who will be eligible next season. Jordan Davis will be transferring out so they have one scholarship to give and one guy who had already signed. So they're losing a top-two guy and their fifth guy but gaining a lot of depth and experience overall.

Duquesne - Year three under Keith Dambrot, who is quickly becoming one of the best coaches in the league. They outperformed expectations all year before losing three straight to end the season, but they don't have any scholarship players graduating, and none who will be seniors next year. With five sophomores and seven freshmen, there remains the possibility of a transfer or two this year. They've got one guy signed and no open scholarships at the moment. If they can keep the core together, this is an even tougher team in 2019-2020.

Rhode Island - Year two under David Cox. They were the only .500 team in conference this year and now they graduate their 8th and 10th leading scorers. The 9th guy, freshman Omar Silverio (who had a SLU offer), is transferring. Barring any other transfers, they return the top 7 players and a sneaky good freshman class that should continue to improve. Dowtin and Langevine will be seniors, and Fatts Russell will somehow only be a junior. They have two redshirts who'll be eligible in the fall, a freshman and a Georgetown transfer (Antwan Walker, a former SLU offer who was dismissed from GU). They've got two wings signed and two scholarships to give after Michael Tertsea announced he's transferring. This will be a strong squad.

Question Marks:

St. Bonaventure - Year 13 under Mark Schmidt, now the winningest coach in school history. This was the streakiest team in the A10 all season and underachieved in non-conference play before finishing 12-6 and fourth in the conference. They graduate their first (Courtney Stockard) and third (LaDarien Griffin) scorers along with the senior PG (Nelson Kaputo) who was already being edged out by talented freshman and second-leading scorer Kyle Lofton. Melkisedek Moreaux and Tshiefu Ngalakulondi are both transferring, and while neither was a major contributor this season, they now have four spots to fill this spring and some questions about depth. They have a Mt. St. Mary's transfer becoming eligible, another juco commitment, and a signed freshman. Lofton and Osun Osunniyi were two of the best freshmen in the league and Dominick Welch wasn't far behind. If they can keep the class together and use the remaining four scholarships well, this is an intriguing team.

Saint Louis - Year four under Travis Ford and we'll see yet another year of serious roster turnover, with only five returning players. Five guys are signed, four freshman and a juco junior, and three open scholarships remain. Those are big. There's plenty of talent but it remains to be seen how good the newcomers are and how well the team will come together. Basically: a lot like this season but a younger team in a stronger conference.

Richmond - Year 15 under Chris Mooney, as confirmed yesterday by the school, despite mounting pressure from Richmond fans. On paper, they're a strong pick to make a leap because Gilyard and Golden will be juniors and their talented 5-man freshman class will have a year of experience under their belts. They only graduate a guy who was the 7th or 8th player off the bench, they've got a Wagner transfer becoming eligble in the fall, and they've got one guy signed with at least one more scholarship open. If they can keep the roster together and the noise to a minimum, they could be sneaky good.

George Mason - Year five under Dave Paulsen. Mason was a hot pick as an A10 title contender in the preseason, then got off to a disastrous start in non-conference play before putting together a respectable A10 record (11-7). They graduate Livingston, one of the best PGs in the league, but return everyone else. They've got two guys signed, a big and a PG, and they just got a commitment this week from a guy who goes by "Daddy" (Bahaide Haidara). If the roster holds, they're all set for the fall.

Rebuilds:

UMass - Year three under Matt McCall, and it's a big one. UMass has finished 13th in the A10 in back-to-back seasons and needs to make a leap or I have to think McCall's job will be in trouble. Holloway is the only guy graduating, but Luwane Pipkins (Providence), Kieran Hayward, Tre Wood, Curtis Cobb, and Unique McLean have already announced they'll be transferring. They were oversubscribed so one or more of them may have been on the way out for quite a while, and they still have two scholarships to give after a new commitment. McCall fired three of his assistants in late March and looks to be making a talent upgrade. Even so, with six guys on the way out and so many new players and coaches, it's hard to see where they could make much of a leap next season, especially given the relative strength of the league.

LaSalle - Year two under Ashley Howard. Star senior Pookie Powell graduates. Two players are signed, with one verbal commitment. Miles Brookins, Traci Carter, and Cian Sullivan have announced they'll be transferring, opening up three scholarships. Deas and Phiri were the second and third-leading scorers this season and will be seniors. They had a brutal non-conference schedule this season so I'd expect their overall record to improve but a similar A10 record. They're a couple seasons away, at best.

Fordham - Year five under Jeff Neubauer. Perpetual rebuild. Bunting and Pekarek graduate, and a senior transfer will become eligible. It'll be interesting to see if the 6-man freshman class stays intact because that's where most of the talent is. So far, no one has announced a transfer this spring. They've got one big signed and two open scholarships.

George Washington - Year one under Jamion Christian. They don't graduate anybody but since Christian was introduced, three players announced transfers (Terry Nolan, Marcus Littles, and Shandon Brown). One of their two signed players (Jamison Battle) reiterated his commitment to GW but the other (Chase Paar) has not yet said whether he'll stay or opt out o fhis LOI. Nolan was their third-leading scorer and will be tougher to replace than the other two. They had a full roster before the transfers and now have three scholarships to give. Year one for Christian will be a struggle but he had some success at Siena and might be able to get GW back on track eventually.

St. Joe's - Year one under Billy Lange. Biggest disappointment in the A10 this year because of injuries and underperformance. Markell Lodge, Mike Muggeo, and Chris Clover graduate, and the big question is whether Charlie Brown stays or goes pro or transfers. Kenan Sarvan has opted out of his LOI and Jameer Nelson, Jr. (2020 verbal commitment) has reopened his recruitment after the head coaching job wasn't given to his dad. The Hawks currently have three scholarships to give this spring but there is the possibility of more transfers.

I'd probably put Davidson second and Dayton third, and given the graduations and transfers at Bonaventure, I think they've got enough turnover for me to put them 6th. This is basically where I'm at from 7-14, though; my tiers aren't necessarily in numerical order.

By the way, I'm not sure how many have noticed, but Matt McCall is basically blowing things up at UMass heading into his third year. Given their near-bottom finishes in each of his first two seasons, he probably sees the writing on the wall if he doesn't show improvement this coming year. Unfortunately for him, the league is so much stronger and Pipkins transferred to Providence. But they've got 5 (!) other guys on the way out and 1 guy (Holloway) graduating, so he's replacing over half the roster along with almost the entire coaching staff. Ty Weeks committed this week and is a good player and people think Tre Mitchell is probably next so the thought is that he's upgrading the talent quickly - but these are still freshmen. I don't see how they make a big jump unless he's a magician with these remaining scholarships.

Well, Tre Mitchell just committed tonight. McCall is on a mission.

Hmmm.  McCall fires all of his staff, hires the Head Coach of Woodstock Academy, Tony Bergeron and he brings in three players including Mitchell, Weeks and Santos.

A10 will be very top heavy next year. Top 5 teams will battle it out. I don’t expect a team to have less than 5 losses

A lot will depend on how well all of these teams do in non conference play. If the top 6 teams have good schedules and get some big wins, the conference will do very well. Problem is that the bigger conference teams are playing fewer non con games, so leagues like the A10 are at an automatic disadvantage.

What would you do if you were Charlie Brown? Best scorer in the conference, got some NBA looks but will likely go undrafted, and your coach and best supporting players are all gone. Sitting out a year does no favors for his NBA potential. He's in a tough spot.

Realistically St. Joe's won't be good again before Brown's eligibility expires. If transfers now to a good mid major, he may be a 1st round pick in 2 years.

He’s played two years but been in college three years. If he hasn’t graduated yet, he should be busting his ass to do so in the next year. Play one more year at St Joe’s. If you’re good enough, go to the NBA. If you’re not there yet, leave as a Graduate transfer to a better team where you can get more exposure.

Thats what I’d do.

I’d stay away from Javon Bess
