Coach Ford Apology Thread

Isabell scoring like he has gives our guys a chance to rest on offense and exert even more energy on defense. It's still no substitute for a real offense but it'll do in a do or die situation.

Definitely can’t understate what Isabell is doing the past three weeks, just flat out taking over games offensively. And man do we need it as we really don’t have any other offense outside of French at times. So it is Isabell and attack the offensive glass, but this stretch Isabell is putting together will be remembered. Way to close out your career TI, give us a few more. And props to the rest of the team for playing like absolute dogs attacking the paint and the glass, neither Richmond or Dayton has any desire to match our physicality.

My big concern w/Ford right now is how bad has he ticked off the refs in our two games. He unloaded on them in his half time interview in the Richmond game, and last night got a warning. I'd wager A10 refs probably like McKillop and his genteel approach to the game a hell of a lot more than Travis, who's basically said they suck. Our own version of Hurley is what he's become these last two games. Chill a little, Coach, you don't want to be sending Thor SR to the line anymore than you have to. Kid hardly misses.

I think his warning was for leaving the coaches box not for what he said

Without Ford's eruption in Game 1 and the officials suddenly finding religion, the Billiken's season would have ended two days ago. Hurley didn't change and Rhode Island's program turned out just fine.

When everyone is as excited as they have been since the season tipped off, why immediately come to a message board calling fans out who thought the team underachieved to this point? They did underachieve this season, but last night went a long way in changing the narrative of this season. You know what, those same fans who were critical are now quite happy to see their team take down Dayton and hopefully win two more. Some of those folks are in Brooklyn now. It’s just odd behavior to call out fans minutes after a big win when what they were saying a week ago isn’t suddenly wrong. This season was a disappointment ranking in the 130s of Pomeroy, but last night was fantastic and this weekend could be one we will always remember. We are all fans, no need to snipe at folks who don’t have the exact same opinions as you. That is all. I love your optimism as a Billiken fan, but not all of us are wired that way. And no need to be calling folks out when they too are currently just as happy as you are.

Trust me, I would never call myself the man. I am very self aware of the loser I am.

How can you say they underachieved when their entire front court depth was wiped out and their best player has been hobbled for much of the season? I think Ford has done a tremendous job keeping this team together.

You could be right. Just don't tick 'em off so much they send him packing!

Jordan Goodwin needs tons of work .....not on the offensive boards, not on steals and passing lanes, not on hustle and intangibles ..... but on being an offensive guard, the engine to our car next year.   Yes he made a three, a key three, probably the biggest three of the week.  So did Obi Toppin.  So did Trey Landers.  And Jordan is better than both.  Combined.  Toppin didn't have a dunk all game and without that, he's just another weak, limited cog.  Last night, he was literally a monstrous small forward, a beast on the offensive boards.  I never questioned that part of hsi game.  Case in point ---- airball from 20, and an airball from 10.  First two shots of his game I think.  No apologies are forthcoming, don't hold your breath.

I thought the key to the game was Ford's selection of the defense.  That's all on Ford and/or the staff.  It wasn't a passive 1-3-1, not all the time.  The speed and urgency by which the outer guys on the "3" rushed the wing players and disrupted things was fantastic.  I don't recall seeing such vigor in the zone ever before.  And we didn't do it all the time.  It was selective.  We rushed Crutcher and Cohill, but did not do so with the same vigor when the pass went to Lander or Mikesell.  We also got out on Davis, another one-trick catch-and-shoot pony.  Whether or not hsi injury hurt him that bad, Toppin never tried to attack the lane the whole second half.  It was a slugfest and we imposed our will.  Ford and/or the staff get credit for that for sure.

We seemed to have discovered our best game is bully ball.  With some hero ball by Isabell thrown in.  I was quite dismayed by our guys not seemingly knowing where to go or where to be.  There were many times Bess and Thatch were in the same spot and maybe that's not on Ford but 30 games into a season, I think you ought to know, don't you?  At times, Dayton's offense was a thing of beauty .... cuts, screens, passes, layups.  In that lone regard, they were better than us most times.  And I believe that was when we went 2-3 zone. Ford adapted and coached his ass off.  That's his job.  We will need the same enthusiasm to disrupt tonight's veteran, calm, cool and disciplined opponent.

I don't recall being in the group putting Ford on the hot seat just yet.  He's obviously limited.  Even with a depleted bench, these last three years have been great over anything [dead] did on his own.  I can't wait to see what next year brings but if we continue to walk the ball up and play pedestrian, we suffer.  Twenty-one wins is a huge success even with our original lofty expectations.  Ford outcoached both Mooney and Grant so far in Brooklyn.  Tonight it's McKillop ------ the stakes have been raised all over the place.

If TFord is able to wade through your word salad, I’m sure he would reply “apology accepted “.

Everyone does realize, I hope, that if we win tomorrow, head coaching offers are coming Coach Ford’s way...  and he may be gone if not appreciated. Maybe even after these past 3 games.  Embarrassing that so many have been anti-Ford.  Has he made mistakes? Of course.  Is criticism of him fair?  Of course.  Different opinions as to lineups, tempo, defensive schemesetc is what makes the Board enjoyable. But to pile on and make him out to be such a terrible Coach is only a reflection of those who make such dumb comments. Hopefully he doesn’t listen.  And again, for all still fixed upon preseason expectations, the National media who procalimed Jim Crews Coach of the Year also predicted us as A10 Champs - then again, maybe A10 Tournament Champs?

I'm not so sure if we win tomorrow he will suddenly be inundated with offers. Now, if we do and make a Sweet 16 run then that may make some schools sit up and take notice. And then it will be up to SLU to keep him here and happy.

I do think Ford saw the SLU job as a legit route back to a P5 position, but I just don't think it's in the cards even if we win tomorrow. And so far what jobs are out there? LSU? They could be facing some serious stuff. But bottom line it's up to SLU to finally end our brief flings with good coaches. Give him a raise and make him feel loved.

Ford isn’t a win or even a Sweet 16 appearance away from getting a job offer that would attract him. He is one season removed from a sex scandal involving his team. Even though most of us believe it was BS, it means, in today’s environment Ford isn’t getting an attractive job offer just yet.  The last thing any AD wants is the first question asked of his new coach to be about a Title IX investigation that caused three players to be dismissed from his team.

Agree. Coach Ford probably doesnt want to uproot his family and move just yet.  Probably not the offers he wants but offers do come to winning coaches. How many wins now? 22?
