ACE
Sincere Carry led the A10 in assists - an impressive accomplishment for a freshman. IF Yuri is as good as advertised, I wonder if he could do something approaching that level. I'm not trying to put unrealistic expectations on Yuri, but those who have seen him play lately are raving about him, And Carry's success is another example of how talented freshman can really make an impact in this league. Also Bynum, who is 5-10 ranked 6th in assists as a frosh. BTW, Carry has a very interesting story. He had a few injuries and actually committed to a D2 program. He had a big senior year, got out of his commitment and signed with the Dukes. What a steal he was for them.

Sheltiedave
In order to pick up lots of assists, you need shooters who can make outside shots and 3 foot shots.

Goodwin will be our starting point guard because we need shooting at the 2 and 3. Starting two nonshooters in the backcourt just makes our offensive problems worse. ACE
Bump... I know it's only three games into the season, but the premise of this thread from way back in mid-March may not be too far off. JohnnyJumpUp likes this

Thankfully it hasn’t looked necessary so far, but if this team faces some adversity and a losing streak I expect we’ll see a lot of 4 guard lineups with French. Or 3 guards with KC at the 4 and French back at the 5. I guess what I’m saying is I’ve seen nothing to indicate Bell will more than a 6-7 minute guy this season. DoctorB
I don't watch anywhere near as much DI basketball as I used to; but Yuri's about as good at seeing the court develop and having a feel for his teammates as anyone I've seen in . . . well, a long time. His court vision 3 games in is just outstanding. To be honest, I'm surprised how good he's looking already -- the good kind of surprise. Still a work in progress too, so what kind of dynamo monster can he become in the A10?? Can't wait to see... and ps: he may not start this year; but when games are on the line, he will finish. He'll get plenty of minutes...
Taj79
As far as I can tell, Hankton adds very little to the equation right now outside of some rest time, emergency service, a rebound or two and mop up minutes. Each time he first touches the ball it's launch city. You can start him, bu the then be spent and unable to give French those minor rminute blows. I would prefer to have Hankton in limited doses off the bench as opposed to starting.. If you start him, what's the plan then at break time, bring Bell in? Perkins and Hsrgrove, while scoring last night, still appear lost on the floor at times. I think the offense and starers are going well right now. If we hit my mark on my OOC record call (5 and 5), we are about to go 5 and 5 in the next ten games. That sounds awful as I type it but it is what it is. Yuri will likely close out games in January and further on. I hope he improves his FT shooting as well.

brianstl
If Yuri can hit his jump shot at a decent clip, he can lead the conference in assists. He doesn't need to be a lights out shooter, but he needs to be able to keep his defender honest against as they competition increases. The Wiz
Yuri is currently 5th ITN in assists/ gm....The 4 ahead of him are averaging 8-13 min more playing time /gm. ACE likes this

So what if he makes 1 - he won't make enough for this be a high percentage shot for the team. Yes, he provides rest, emergency service and 5 extra fouls, but he is strong, does a decent job rebounding and is one of our better FT shoots. Without him, we lose the game against Valpo. And his skills will be more noticeable and appreciated in games with slower tempo and to stop half court offenses.
Clock_Tower
Our team is not ready Seton Hall. Auburn or the upcoming conference games - but not much can be done about that. We will have to play, take our lumps and hopefully learn. As the talent level of our opponents increases and teams try to slow the tempo, perimeter shooting and half court defense will be more and more important - and our whole team needs work on this. Jacobs is ahead of my expected schedule I had prior to the season, had an awesome breakout game of 20 points, made the important 3 pointers but most of his points were still not from the perimeter and his effectiveness (for himself and our team) throughout the season will depend upon his outside shot . Fred is far ahead of last year, made 2 big early 3 pointers last night, needs to shake his defensive specialist role, demonstrates good form on his shooting, but his 2 shot attempts in 17 minutes during Valpo shows that he still has a ways to go. Jimmerson is doing great as a true freshmen, has fantastic confidence, is not playing like he did during the exhibition game, had his foot on the line last night and otherwise would have earned the "m" in Jimerson, but he will need to up his game (shoot more and make more) by conference season when the defenses get tougher. Weaver was sure accurate last night going 3 for 3 from the 3 point line, has been accurate in the other games as well, but needs to step up - needs to shed his role player tag, needs to up his defense and needs to carry us a few times as the Graduate Transfer Senior he is - even more by conference season. Same with Perkins - possibly our best/more pure shooter -- who will be able to stretch defenses and keep opponents honest - though, his off the ball play and defense needs more work as well. All in all, very pleased so far -- but things will only get tougher.

But Goodwin is the actually the one surprising me more than Yuri. I knew what Yuri could do. I had doubts that we would ever see the offensive player Goodwin was in high school. Getting in the best shape of his life has made that possible, even without a knockdown jumper.

As I pointed out last spring, Yuri’s ball handling and play making we’re not just good, but at an elite level. Never had any doubt he would be a star. What’s puzzling is how he was overlooked by so many other schools.
