Interesting. What the hell happened there?

EDIT: Quick Twitter search speculates they are headed to Virginia.

Michigan State is the other rumored destination.  Dick Bennett got his start at Steven's Point, home of the Hausers, hence the UVA connection.   The Hauser father has reportedly tweeted that the reason is NOT because of Howard returning.  Some speculated the brothers were tired of playing second fiddle.

The Hauser brothers, two Marquette starters are transferring.

This one is pretty wild.  Brad Soderberg played at the Catholic high school in Stevens Point. The Hausers went to the public high school and won 3 state titles.  Sam was a highly recruited 4 star, Joey was a 5 star. Joey was a good football player and had ankle issues because of it. For 3 years Howard’s best friend on the team has been Sam Hauser, frequent visits and stays in Stevens Point, super close with the family.  Plenty of rumors and gossip but the people who know aren’t talking yet.

This is the 2nd time in recent memory that Marquette was going into a season with big final four type aspirations only to have a star player leave. Previously under Buzz Williams, coming off of an elite 8 team, NCAA breakout star Vander Blue left early for pros surprising Williams. The team fell apart with an average season. Buzz left. There were similar aspirations for next season for them.

Virginia has been mentioned as a possibility. Tony Bennett almost became the Marquette coach. Perhaps Soderberg would have been an assistant there. When Tom Crean left, Bennett was first choice for Marquette. However Bennett’s wife is from Louisiana. The LSU job was open. LSU chose Johnny Jones.  Bennett contact Marquette to see if still interested. Marquette had just hired Buzz Williams.  Several years later when Buzz left, Marquette contacted Bennett again but this time he was settled and happy at Virginia. Marquette then had a deal in place with Shaka Smart, but Smart’s wife didn’t want to move to Milwaukee. Cuonzo Martin struggled in the interview. Wojo interviewed well and was hired.

Wojo did have an interesting situation with the Ellenson family from Wisconsin. Rick Majerus tried to recruit Wally Ellenson to SLU. Wally’s younger brother Henry was a 5 star recruit. Wally wound up eventually at Marquette and Henry later signed too. Henry was a one and done recruit. After Henry left, Wally did too. But that story depends on whom you ask. Wally was more of a track star and less of a high major hooper.  And it appeared Wojo dumped Wally immediately after Henry left.

The real need in the Hauser situation was and is a facilitating point guard. Howard is a two guard, an elite high scoring from anywhere, great under sized shooting, and ft shooting two guard from deep, mid range, at the hoop, etc...improved his d this season but not a strong defender. The Hausers are tall, very skilled, Sam very polished stretch 4 player, can shoot it, excellent ft’s, can back down small players, very skilled. Not a strong defender and not quick or fast. Joey was just starting but was going to be similar to Sam but with even more potential. Soderberg and Bennett would do well with both of them. Sam is not a grad transfer so he would have to sit a year and play a year. The interesting thing was Koby McEwen was going to try to take the point guard role to help facilitate.  To leave after 3 seasons with realistic final four expectations your final year is eye opening to say the least. Now they are a top 25 ish type team on paper.

Happy for Brad this season. He was a very kind and generous guy behind the scenes at SLU and did some nice things anonymously.  He’s in a great situation where he doesn’t have to be the face of a program, but he gets a lot of responsibility to do the things he likes and prefers and is good at it with player development and scouting.

I heard from some Marquette folks in the know that the relationship between Sam and Markus deteriorated beyond repair for reasons that remain somewhat unclear. The craziest thing to me is that Sam will reportedly be a sit-one, play-one player (he won't be eligible as a grad transfer) which tells me that sh!t must have really hit the fan. Can't believe Wojo lost the locker room to this level, it doesn't bode well for his job security moving forward.

I wonder if Wojo would try to make a move for the St. John’s job now. If he would try to get out before it implodes on him.

I did not see it, but apparently Mr. Hauser sent out a tweet saying the situation had nothing to do with Markus Howard.  Just passing this along.

Yeah, apparently that was an attempt to help things blow over without making anything else public. My source is pretty reliable, but I can dm you more specifics if you want to know. I just don’t want to put things out on the internet that are easily traced back to people close to the program that haven’t already been made known elsewhere.

I don’t see him leaving. He carefully chose to go there in the first place. It doesn’t appear to be more than about the Hauser family.  Returning team is still good and recruiting is going well. Some would like Wojo to diversify his offensive style a bit.  Pressure is high for Wojo to produce deeper NCAA runs beginning next season.  It’s a big budget place. Wojo still has a top 25 caliber team for next year without the Hauser brothers. They lose the two Hauser brothers, a big loss, but they return every other meaningful player. They also add a medical redshirt (Greg Elliott) and immediate impact traditional transfer (Kobe McEwen).  We’ll see if they add any grad transfers. Top 50 combo guard commit Symir Torrence may re-classify for next season or stick with his 2020 commitment to Marquette. They have an in home visit this week with his top 50 wing teammate Andre Jackson. They are in on a couple of other high level front court players. Assistant Stan Johnson is key for them, elite recruiter, high character.

Thanks for the insight.

Thanks. To be clear Dwayne Killings is the lead recruiter for Torrence and Jackson. (NE & Mid-Atlantic areas). Imo Wojo would only leave if he knew he was getting Fired like Stallings at Vandy and some others. It’s not at that point yet, and, if a strong season next year followed by good recruiting, he’ll be there a while. But it no deeper NCAA runs soon, no. Coach K was a big adviser to Wojo regarding taking the Marquette job. They are very close. St. Louisan Chris Carawell has been back at Duke after a stint with Wojo, one of his first assistants. He’s very highly thought of as a person, and one of Wojo’s closest friends, but he didn’t necessarily deliver many recruits for them. As for the Hauser brothers, Wisconsin, (Sam’s girlfriend is on the volleyball team and their high school point guard is there. There has always been an intense in state rivalry there. Vander Blue, Wesley Matthews, etc are from Madison but chose Marquette) Michigan St. UVA are the early mentions. I would think Wisconsin and Virginia have better chances.  We’ll see.

#26 on the ESPN list apparently isn't on our radar.

This goes to show you that the competition for grad transfer big men (even mediocre ones like Smits) is going to be very tough.  Valpo was 15-18 last year and 220 ranked by KemPom.  Smits numbers are decent (despite being pretty turnover prone), but he put them up playing against MVC competiton on a mediocre team.  If that guy is drawing interest from Arizona State, NC State, and Butler.  Then SLU really has it's work cut out to find a GT big who isn't Rashed Anthony-esque.  I'm hoping for Keith Stone or Matt Ryan as realistic targets to fill our need for a stretch big.

Alihan Demir from Drexel, maybe Isabell could put in a word. Not an exceptional shot blocker but he seems to be a decent scorer and can shoot free throws at a reasonable clip.

Him too.  I just glossed over his name on the list.  I'd be very happy to get one of those 3 guys preferably Demir or Stone.  Actually Deng Geu looks like he could be a good option as well, but I can't think of any connection that might help us land him.

He’s a target and I hear Isabell is putting in more than a kind word about SLU.

I wonder if we get Demir if we go young with our next recruit and bring in a freshman big

what quality freshman big is still available in the spring?
