SLU Records Review

This feels like the most appropriate thread for something like this, but I wanted to do a quick rundown of stats where SLU players were in the top-10 nationally, kind of like what Wiz includes in his pre-game write-ups:

Bess has currently played the most minutes of ANYONE in the NCAA this year (1283). That number is even more impressive considering that he has been playing hurt for the past several weeks!

Goodwin is 6th in total offensive rebounds (122). Everyone else in the top-10 is 6'7" or taller.

French is 9th in total fouls...

Looking at team rankings, we are towards the top nationally in:

Free-throw attempts (15th) and free-throw rate (31st)

Total offensive rebounds (3rd) and offensive rebound % (13th)

Total Rebounds (6th) and total rebound % (19th)

Minutes played (9th)

Well, I said I'd do a final wrap-up after the postseason ended but I decided it'd be more fun going into the Tournament if we could see who's got potential records at stake. Class and season records update through the end of the regular season and conference tournament (1+ games remaining):

-Javon Bess is going to be very close to the total point list for seniors. He has 535 and needs 553 (Roland Gray) for 10th, so we'd need to play 2 more games if he stays at his average of 15.3 or he needs an 18-point game to tie Gray. He has already cracked the total 3-point FGs list with 65, which has him alone in 7th. He needs 4 more to tie Scott Highmark in 6th and 6 more to tie Justin Love and Kevin Lisch in 4th. He needs 2 more 3-pointers to tie Lisch in 10th for the all-class 3FG list. He has attempted the fourth-most 3-pointers ever in a single season for any class. His rebounding average (6.7) is short of the 8.0 mark needed for the top 10, but with 233 rebounds so far, he will almost certainly pass the 234 (Gray) needed for the total rebounds list. He has 48 steals and needs 49 to tie Chris Sloan, Justin Love, and Darryl Leonard, so he's got a great shot at that list. He needs 52 for the all-class list. His 1,285 minutes are an all-time record for any class and his 36.7 MPG ranks second. Summary: Bess has reached one senior top-ten list and has a real chance to make as many as three more in the next game or two. His total minutes played are already an all-time SLU single-season record for any class, and his MPG ranks second. He has a shot at a few all-class lists, as well.

-D.J. Foreman owns the junior class FG% record at .626, well above the second place mark of .574 (Tom Frericks), and he's not going to repeat the feat as a senior. He's currently at .487, well short of the .554 he needs to crack the senior top-10 list. None of his other stats are in play. Summary: Foreman holds the all-time record for FG% for juniors but won't crack any senior lists.

-Tramaine Isabell is now tied with Bill Moulder for 8th place in senior assists with 126. He needs another 12 to tie Josh Fisher in 7th. His 39-point performance was good for a tie for fourth all-time for a single game but his scoring on the season doesn't leave him within reach of the senior marks. He's 16 minutes from the all-class minutes played list for a season, but the 9th and 10th place marks (Josh Fisher's 1,122 and Tommie Liddell's 1,119) have already been bumped by Bess and Goodwin, so he needs 45 minutes to tie Kwamain Mitchell's 1,148 in what will now be 10th place. Summary: Isabell is on the senior assists top-ten list and will likely finish 8th overall. He has a chance to make the all-class minutes played in a season list if we play 2 games or if we go to OT against VT and he never comes out.

-Dion Wiley isn't going to hit any marks at this pace, and his injuries set him back further. He's back on pace to hit minimum shot attempts for the books, but his percentages are too low right now to even mention. Summary: Wiley will not make any senior class record lists.

-Jack Raboin would finish first in the junior class records for both FG percentage and 3-point FG percentage if he continues his current pace (a perfect 1.000 for each on 2-2 FG and 1-1 3FG) and gets to 100 FG attempts and 50 3-point FG attempts. #letjackshoot Summary: Raboin will not make any junior class record lists.

-Jordan Goodwin's scoring (10.6 PPG, 371 TP) hasn't been enough to approach the sophomore season top 10 lists in points (Luther Burden is 10th at 433) or average (Joe Wiley is 10th at 14.1). He has 261 rebounds, which would be 4th all-time for sophomores but French will finish above him, so he's currently looking at 5th. He's not going to get up to 7.9 RPG (Willie Reed, Dwayne Evans), currently at 7.5. He's now the all-time sophomore steals leader with 64 (he bumped Anthony Drejaj and Marque Perry from the list), and he will continue to build on that. He's 3rd in assists by a sophomore with 123, bumping Charles Newberry's 97 from the top 10. Darryl Lenard (125) is third and he should pass him in the VT game. His 1,196 minutes are the fourth most in a season and he will be in third after the next game. Summary: Goodwin is on 3 sophomore top-ten lists, owning 1 class record outright, and will finish in the top 5 on each of those 3. He is climbing the all-class lists in minutes and steals.

-Hasahn French's 64 blocks on the season have him alone in third on the sophomore blocks list. He now sits within striking distance of Melvin Robinson (66) and not-quite-striking-distance of Willie Reed (73) for the record, so the latter is probably out of reach unless we go on a major run. Those marks by Reed and Robinson are also the first and third most blocks all-time in a single season for any class, and French is now 4th on that list, and Kelvin Henderson's 68 block season is the only non-sophomore entry in the top four. At 8.4 RPG, he's currently 8th all-time for sophomores, bumping Reed and Evans from 10th, and his 294 total rebounds have him in 3rd, but well out of reach of the record holders, Cal Burnett (416) and Jerry Koch (405). Summary: French is in the top 3 on the sophomore rebounding and block lists, he's in the top 10 on rebounding average, and he's on the all-class list for blocks.

-Carte'Are Gordon's numbers are now final. He is 9th on the freshman blocks list with 23, bumping Evans (22) to 10th and Rob Loe (20) from the list. His FG% of .542 would put him 6th all-time for freshmen, but with 83 FGA, he is short of the 100 minimum attempts requirement. His 3P% of .400 would've been good for fifth place on the freshman list, but his 5 attempts are well short of the minimum threshold of 50 attempts. Summary: Gordon's 23 blocks were enough to make the sophomore top 10 before he left, and he will finish 6th overall.

-Fred Thatch has 28 steals and needs to get to 32 to tie Bonner for 10th on the freshman list, so he's got a very small chance of making that list. He only had one in the A10 Tournament, but he was robbed of at least one more on a bad call. Summary: Thatch is a long shot to make one freshman top 10 list (steals).

-K.C. Hankton, Demarius Jacobs, and Brandon Courtney are not in the hunt for any freshman records at this time. Summary: It doesn't look like any freshmen will hit the freshman class record lists.

Are we the worst free throw shooting team to ever make the NCAA Tournament?

I know that Javon Bess has already hit the 1000 pt club for his NCAA career, but he is only 25pts away from joining the 1000 pt club solely as a Billiken (440 + 535). Time to join the club Friday night!

Only other player to do it in 2 years was David Burns.  Quite a feat.

I'd be fine with him joining the club Sunday evening...

Bess, Burns, Justin Love, and Donnie Dobbs are the only 2-year Billikens to get to 900.

Roland Gray and Monroe Douglass were each over 900 points scored through their 2nd season. Kwamain had 899 through his soph year.

This is the stat I’ve been tracking. Even though more game are being played now, 1,000 points in 2 years is no joke.

Final season class record wrap-up for 2018-2019:

-Javon Bess made his mark on a few senior lists and was very close to a few more. He had 549 points and needed 553 (Roland Gray) for 10th. He ended up 7th on the total 3-point FGs list with 66. He came 1 shy of tying Kevin Lisch (67) in 10th for the all-class 3FG list. He attempted the fourth-most 3-pointers ever in a single season for any class, with 203 attempts. His 244 rebounds have him tied in 9th for seniors with Ian Vouyoukas, bumping Gray's 234 from 10th. He finished with 50 steals, good for 9th all-time for seniors and bumped Chris Sloan, Justin Love, and Darryl Leonard into a tie for 10th. He needed 52 steals for the all-class list. His 1,324 minutes are an all-time record for any class and his 36.8 MPG ranks 2nd.

-Tramaine Isabell finished 8th in senior assists with 126, bumping David Burns (102) from the top 10. His 39-point performance against Duquesne was good for a tie for 4th all-time for a single game. His 1,141 minutes would've been good for 9th place on the all-class season minutes played list, but the 9th and 10th place marks (Josh Fisher's 1,122 and Tommie Liddell's 1,119) have already been bumped by Bess and Goodwin, so he ended up 11th. He also ended up just short of 3-point field goals for seniors, and 3-point attempts for all classes. With his late-season play, he came closer in points than I expected (480 vs. 553) and his steals were in play but came up short (41 vs. 49).

-D.J. Foreman owns the junior class FG% record at .626, well above the 2nd-place mark of .574 (Tom Frericks), but he didn't repeat the feat as a senior. He finished at .497, well short of the .554 he needed to crack the senior top-10 list.

-Dion Wiley didn't play enough to register on any senior class lists. I'd like to think that 3-point marks would've been in play if he were healthy for the full season and could find his groove.

-Elliott Welmer also didn't play enough to show up on any class lists. I just wanted one made FG for him, whether on senior night, in the A10 Tournament, or in the NCAA Tournament. Still, seeing him on the floor in those moments was one of the greatest thrills for me as a fan this season.

-Jack Raboin would have finished 1st in the junior class records for both FG percentage and 3-point FG percentage if he reached 100 FG attempts and 50 3-point FG attempts, because he was a perfect 1.000 for each on 2-2 FG and 1-1 3FG. The #letjackshoot movement never gained any steam.

-Jordan Goodwin and his unique style leave him with some unique records for the season. His scoring (10.5 PPG, 377 TP) wasn't enough to get on the sophomore season top 10 lists in points (Luther Burden is 10th at 433) or average (Joe Wiley is 10th at 14.1). He had 270 rebounds, which is 5th all-time for sophomores and would've been 4th Hasahn French finished above him. At 7.5 RPG, he was short of the 7.9 RPG (Willie Reed, Dwayne Evans) needed for sophomore rebounding average. He's the all-time sophomore steals leader with 66, bumping Anthony Drejaj and Marque Perry from the list, and 66 steals has him 5th for any class. He finished 3rd in assists by a sophomore with 123, bumping Charles Newberry's 97 from the top 10. He could've caught Darryl Lenard (125) for 2nd place but didn't register an assist in the Virginia Tech game. His 1,233 minutes are the third most in a season for any class.

-Hasahn French finished with 64 blocks on the season, good for 3rd on the sophomore list and 4th on the all-class list. He somehow wasn't credited with any blocks in the VT game (I could've sworn he had 1 or 2), leaving him just short of Melvin Robinson's 66 on both lists (Willie Reed is first with 73). At 8.4 RPG, he finished 8th in rebounding average for sophomores, bumping Reed and Dwayne Evans from 10th. His 302 total rebounds have him in 3rd for sophomores, but well out of reach of the record holders, Cal Burnett (416) and Jerry Koch (405). He and Goodwin bumped Tommie Liddell (225) and Jim McLaughlin (212) from the sophomore top 10 in rebounding. His FG% climbed as the season progressed, but his .492 was short of the .509 needed to tie Kevin Williams in 10th.

-Carte'Are Gordon finished 9th on the freshman blocks list with 23, bumping Evans (22) to 10th and Rob Loe (20) from the list. His FG% of .542 would put him 6th all-time for freshmen, but with 83 FGA, he was short of the 100 minimum attempts requirement. His 3P% of .400 would've been good for fifth place on the freshman list, but his 5 attempts were well short of the minimum threshold of 50 attempts.

-Fred Thatch, K.C. Hankton, Demarius Jacobs, Ingvi Gudmundsson, and Brandon Courtney did not land on any freshman top-10 lists. Thatch was closest; he had 28 steals and needed to get to 32 to tie Anthony Bonner for 10th on the freshman list.

Please let me know if I missed anything for single-season or single-game records. @HoosierPal is the authority on lists beyond the top 10 and career records.

Just a few additions to Pistol's excellent recap.

TEAM:

I have kept team records since 1988-89.  This was the worst FT shooting team in that period.  (Pistol provided a wider range before.)

Team had the highest Total Number of Rebounds and highest Rebound Per Game average over the stated period.

One last note:  Since 1985-86, I have used what is now an antiquated formula for evaluating a player's stats.  This formula was used by Sports Illustrated several decades ago and was called the SI Power Index.  It takes all of your basic stats, uses multiples of 1.5 or 2, positives and negatives, and comes up with a value.  I still use it for my own entertainment as it allows me to directly compare players.

So, Bess came through with a SI Index of 32.32, which was 14th best since 85-86.  That put him between Lisch's 06-07 season (32.36) and Donnie Dobbs 93-94 season of 31.95.  Last season for Bess was 31.14, 21st best on my SI Power Index list.

Anthony Bonner's 89-90 season value of 48.70 is so far out that it won't be broken using this formula.  Bonner's 88-89 season is second (36.97), and Love's 99-00 season (36.52) is 3rd. Hughes 97-98 season (36.48) is 4th.
