SLU Records Review

Willie Reed would've owned that blocks record by a mile had we gotten another year out of him. 73 blocks in his sophomore season is the all-time season record (Melvin Robinson's 66 as a sophomore is third), and that's just 9 blocks shy of the top 10 for a career (until now, anyway; French has bumped Tatum so 10th will now be Evans at 85). French might be able to reach third (Reed and Remekun are tied at 113) by the end of this season, and would pass Vouyoukas next season.

At the current pace, and assuming at least 12 games to go, French would end up with 55 blocks.  Add that to the 59 from last season would give him 114 (one more than the tandem mentioned above).  If he doubles that in the next two seasons, 228 blocks might stand the test of time.

Class and season records update through the first 12 conference games (6+ games remaining):

-Javon Bess keeps inching closer to the total points for a senior season list. He has 400 and needs 553 (Roland Gray) for 10th, so we'd need to play 36 games if he stays at his average of 16.0. He'll make the 3-pointers made list with 1 more. Davell Roby and Roland Gray are tied for 9th at 56, and Bess has 55 through 25 games, which would put him close to 70 or so for a full season, putting him in the 4-7 range on the top 10 list. His rebounding average (6.6) is short of the 8.0 mark needed for the top 10, but he has a very slim chance to hit 234 (Gray) for the total rebounds list (he's got 164 currently) if he picks it up or we go on a run. He's at 37 steals and needs 49 to tie Chris Sloan, Justin Love, and Darryl Leonard, so he's slowing his chances of getting in the mix for that. He's close to the senior FT% list; his current rate of .825 has him short of the .829 he needs for 10th for now. A couple more 12-12 games like he had last night would do the trick. He's not totally out of the running for the 10th-place 3FG% threshold of .401 quite yet, currently at .372.

-D.J. Foreman owns the junior class FG% record at .626, well above the second place mark of .574 (Tom Frericks), and that category is going to be a reach for him in senior class books unless something changes. He's currently at .491, well short of the .554 he needs to crack the list, but he is still trending positively since A10 play started, so you never know.

-Tramaine Isabell has slowed down from his early season steals and points paces, so he appears out of the running for both. He's going to be close for senior assists (has 78, needs 102 to catch David Burns).

-Dion Wiley isn't going to hit any marks at this pace, and his injuiries set him back further. He's back on pace to hit minimum shot attempts for the books, but his percentages are too low right now to even mention.

-Jack Raboin would finish first in the junior class records for both FG percentage and 3-point FG percentage if he continues his current pace (a perfect 1.000 for each on 2-2 FG and 1-1 3FG) and gets to 100 FG attempts and 50 3-point FG attempts. #letjackshoot

-Jordan Goodwin's scoring (10.0 PPG, 251 TP) hasn't been enough to sniff the sophomore season top 10 lists in points (Luther Burden is 10th at 433) or average (Joe Wiley is 10th at 14.1). He needs 212 rebounds to tie Jim McLaughlin in 10th, and he's probably going to get that, currently with 174. He's probably not going to get up to 7.9 RPG (Willie Reed, Dwayne Evans), currently at 7.0, but it's not totally out of the question yet. As of last night, he moved into a tie for 3rd place in steals with Darryl Leonard at 49, and has bumped Anthony Drejaj and Marque Perry from the list. He needs 1 more to tie Kwamain Mitchell, 10 to tie LaTodd Johnson, and 11 to claim the all-time sophomore steals record. He also should make the assists list in the next game; he has 94 and needs 97 for 10th (Charles Newberry). His percentages are not currently in play, and too low to give him a realistic chance at any of those.

-Hasahn French is just now approaching his shot blocking pace from last season (1.8 BPG vs. 1.7 BPG currently), but his 42 blocks on the season have him alone in third on the sophomore blocks list. He still sits a long way behind Melvin Robinson (66) and Willie Reed (73) for the record, so those are probably out of reach unless we go on a major run and he picks up his pace. He has made the all-class season blocks list, too, now tied with Kelvin Henderson in 10th with 42. At 8.6 RPG, he's currently 8th all-time for sophomores, bumping Reed and Evans from 10th, and he just made the total rebounds list last night; he has 215 and bumped Jim McLaughlin (212). His FG% is probably not in play; he's at .455 and 10th place for sophomores is .509 (Kevin Williams).

-Carte'Are Gordon's numbers are now final. He is 9th on the freshman blocks list with 23, bumping Evans (22) to 10th and Rob Loe (20) from the list. His FG% of .542 would put him 6th all-time for freshmen, but with 83 FGA, he is short of the 100 minimum attempts requirement. His 3P% of .400 would've been good for fifth place on the freshman list, but his 5 attempts are well short of the minimum threshold of 50 attempts.

-Fred Thatch has 19 steals and needs to get to 32 to tie Anthony Bonner for 10th on the freshman list, so he's not exactly on pace for it, but he's not eliminated yet, either.

-K.C. Hankton, Demarius Jacobs, and Brandon Courtney are not in the hunt for any freshman records at this time.

Add on to Pistol's report:

SINGLE SEASON, all classes:

Bess 5th in Minutes Played, position fluctuates by game.  Bess, two games off of 1000 minutes played in season.  Currently there are 40 players on the 1000 minute list.

French tied for 10th in single season blocks with Kelvin Henderson's Junior season.

CAREER

Bess, 18th in scoring average, sandwiched between Highmark and Bryant. 12th in FT%, just ahead of Cody Ellis, first in Minutes Per Game at 36.2, well ahead of 2nd.

Foreman, 4th in FG%

French, 6th in blocks.  He will be 2nd or 3rd by the end of the season.

I'll do one of these today, another when the regular season is over, and then a final wrap-up when the postseason is over. Class and season records update through the first 15 conference games (3 regular season games remaining):

-Javon Bess will probably come up short on total points for seniors. He has 434 and needs 553 (Roland Gray) for 10th, so we'd need to play 36 games if he stays at his average of 15.5. However, he has cracked the total 3-point FGs list with 58, which has him alone in 8th. He needs 4 more to tie Cody Ellis in 7th and 11 more to tie Highmark in 6th. His rebounding average (6.8) is short of the 8.0 mark needed for the top 10, but he has a very slim chance to hit 234 (Gray) for the total rebounds list (he's got 189 currently) if he picks it up or we go on a run. He's at 42 steals and needs 49 to tie Chris Sloan, Justin Love, and Darryl Leonard, so he's not yet out of contention for that. He was close to the senior FT% list but has slid lately; his current rate of .803 has him short of the .829 he needs for 10th for now. His 3-point percentage of .356 is down lately, likely leaving him out of contention for that mark; 10th place is .401.

-D.J. Foreman owns the junior class FG% record at .626, well above the second place mark of .574 (Tom Frericks), and that category is going to be a reach for him in senior class books unless something changes. He's currently at .508, well short of the .554 he needs to crack the list.

-Tramaine Isabell is going to be close for senior assists (has 90, needs 102 to catch David Burns). His season average is just above 3, so if we play 4 more games he should get there.

-Jordan Goodwin's scoring (10.1 PPG, 283 TP) hasn't been enough to sniff the sophomore season top 10 lists in points (Luther Burden is 10th at 433) or average (Joe Wiley is 10th at 14.1). He needs 212 rebounds to tie Jim McLaughlin in 10th, and he's probably going to get that, currently with 197. He's probably not going to get up to 7.9 RPG (Willie Reed, Dwayne Evans), currently at 7.0. He's now alone in 2nd place in steals with 55 (he bumped Anthony Drejaj and Marque Perry from the list), and he should beat LaTodd Johnson's first place mark of 59 by the end of the regular season. He's now tied in 9th with Monroe Douglass for assists by a sophomore, with 102, bumping Charles Newberry's 97 from the top 10. His percentages are not currently in play, and too low to give him a realistic chance at any of those.

-Hasahn French is just off his shot blocking pace from last season (1.8 BPG vs. 1.7 BPG currently), but his 48 blocks on the season have him alone in third on the sophomore blocks list. He still sits a long way behind Melvin Robinson (66) and Willie Reed (73) for the record, so those are probably out of reach unless we go on a major run and he picks up his pace. Those marks by Reed and Robinson are also the first and third most blocks all-time in a single season for any class, and French is now 8th on that list. At 8.5 RPG, he's currently 8th all-time for sophomores, bumping Reed and Evans from 10th, and his 237 total rebounds have him in 9th and bumped Jim McLaughlin's 212 from 10th. His FG% is probably not in play but has increased lately; he's at .479 and 10th place for sophomores is .509 (Kevin Williams).

-Fred Thatch has 22 steals and needs to get to 32 to tie Anthony Bonner for 10th on the freshman list, so he's not exactly on pace for it, but he's not completely eliminated yet, either.

-K.C. Hankton, Demarius Jacobs, and Brandon Courtney are not in the hunt for any freshman records at this time.

The regular season is over, so we're due for a recap, and I'll do a final wrap-up when the postseason is over. Class and season records update through the end of the regular season (1+ games remaining):

-Javon Bess will probably come up short on total points for seniors. He has 471 and needs 553 (Roland Gray) for 10th, so we'd need to play 5-6 more games if he stays at his average of 15.2 or he needs a couple 40+ point performances. However, he has cracked the total 3-point FGs list with 60, which has him alone in 8th. He needs 2 more to tie Cody Ellis in 7th and 9 more to tie Highmark in 6th. His rebounding average (6.7) is short of the 8.0 mark needed for the top 10, but he has a very slim chance to hit 234 (Gray) for the total rebounds list (he's got 208 currently) if he picks it up or we go on a run. He's at 45 steals and needs 49 to tie Chris Sloan, Justin Love, and Darryl Leonard, so he's not yet out of contention for that. He was close to the senior FT% list but his current rate of .801 has him short of the .829 he needs for 10th for now.

-D.J. Foreman owns the junior class FG% record at .626, well above the second place mark of .574 (Tom Frericks), and he's not going to repeat the feat as a senior. He's currently at .500, well short of the .554 he needs to crack the senior top-10 list.

-Tramaine Isabell is now tied with David Burns for 10th place in senior assists with 102. His 39-point performance was good for a tie for fourth all-time for a single game but his scoring on the season doesn't leave him within reach of the senior marks.

-Dion Wiley isn't going to hit any marks at this pace, and his injuries set him back further.

-Jordan Goodwin's scoring (10.4 PPG, 321 TP) hasn't been enough to sniff the sophomore season top 10 lists in points (Luther Burden is 10th at 433) or average (Joe Wiley is 10th at 14.1). He has 223 rebounds, bumping Jim McLaughlin from 10th, and he's probably going to pass Tommie Liddell (225) for 9th tomorrow. Next is Anthony Bonner in 8th with 245. He's not going to get up to 7.9 RPG (Willie Reed, Dwayne Evans), currently at 7.2. He's now the all-time sophomore steals leader with 61 (he bumped Anthony Drejaj and Marque Perry from the list), and he will continue to build on that. He's 4th in assists by a sophomore with 114, bumping Charles Newberry's 97 from the top 10. Kyle Cassity (117) is third and he could pass him tomorrow.

-Hasahn French's 55 blocks on the season have him alone in third on the sophomore blocks list. He still sits a long way behind Melvin Robinson (66) and Willie Reed (73) for the record, so those are probably out of reach unless we go on a major run. Those marks by Reed and Robinson are also the first and third most blocks all-time in a single season for any class, and French is now tied with Ian Vouyoukas (2005-2006) in 6th on that list, and Vouyoukas' 2006-2007 season (57 blocks) is the 5th place mark. At 8.4 RPG, he's currently 8th all-time for sophomores, bumping Reed and Evans from 10th, and his 260 total rebounds have him in 4th and bumped Jim McLaughlin's 212 from 10th.

-Fred Thatch has 27 steals and needs to get to 32 to tie Bonner for 10th on the freshman list, so he's got an outside chance at that list if we play a few more games.

-K.C. Hankton, Demarius Jacobs, and Brandon Courtney are not in the hunt for any freshman records at this time.

Hasahn needs 32 to more  French Rejections for career blocks leader. by my calculations.

French is now at 114 for his career, just ahead of Cory Remekun and Willie Reed, who were previously tied for third all-time. Ian Vouyoukas is first with 135 and Melvin Robinson is second with 127.

So French needs 21 blocks to tie the record and 22 to be alone in first. He should own the record by the end of next season's non-conference schedule.

French had 59 blocks last season (1.8 per game) and has 55 this season (1.7 PG).

Last time we played Richmond, he had 3 blocks.

-not to go all negative here, and I doubt these records are in the can, is this the worst FT shooting team in our history? did any one player set a futility record?

We're currently shooting .599 from the line, ranked 352/353 nationally. Shockingly, this is not the worst FT shooting in SLU history, although it is the worst in what I would consider the modern era. Here's where it ranks all-time among SLU's worst FT shooting teams (going back to 1947-1948, the earliest year for which this is available):

.596 - 1962-63

.597 - 1958-59

.597 - 1962-63

.599 - 2018-19

.602 - 1950-51

.614 - 1961-62

.615 - 1951-52

.619 - 2009-10

.630 - 1947-48

.634 - 1955-56

.635 - 1959-60

.637 - 1965-66

.641 - 1976-77

And then it looks like every other team was at .650 or better. The best stretch of FT shooting teams we ever had was in the Grawer era. The overall average in D-I basketball has hovered between .670 and .700 for about 50 years, with a very slight overall increasing trend. The top FT shooting team this season is Incarnate Word at .810, which is incredible. There are 191 teams shooting .700 or better currently and 162 teams below that line. Only Manhattan is worse than SLU this year, at .584.

I don't have the overall D-I FT percentage by year. I found this stat page once and haven't been able to find it since.

I looked through on line records.  Data before the 50's is incomplete.  There were lots of 0-5, 0-4, 1-4's etc. which are too small a sample size to consider.  If you set the line at 50 attempts, which is the bar that qualifies you for the Class and Season lists, Joe Todd, 1955-1956 has the crown at 35 of 86 for 40.7%.  So it appears we will soon have a new futility leader.

Special notice goes to Gil Beckemeier, of the '62-63 team, who hit 5 of 21 for 23.8%.

It's hard to believe we're making (roughly) 6 out of 10. Sure seems like 4. I don't recall ever seeing FT shooting this bad.

French  gets 2 more tonight, though I counted 4 so now he only needs 20 more (double check me as always please Pistol) to be career leader. Unreal Not likely to be overtaken in our lifetime once he gets there.

Official count is 2 tonight, so yes, 20 more for the all-time record.

I'm hoping he has 18 tomorrow and then gets the record on Saturday.

Why not a quintuple-double: 18 points, 13 rebounds, 10 assists (meaning teammates are hitting jumpers when he passes out of double teams), 10 steals, and 18 blocks.  After the game he dons a cape with a blue-and-white "S."

Okay, maybe asking for that many steals is too much.  A quadruple-double?

I'm guessing 18 would be a single game team record.

By 10, yes. Kelvin Henderson had 8 in a game against Siena on 12/1/79 and that remains the single-game SLU blocked shots record.

French had 6 against Pitt this season; that's tied with 4 others for third most in a game. Willie Reed had 7 against Dayton in February 2009.

Funny thing about French is he never really goes off on a block party in a given game; that Pitt game is the only time this season he's had more than 3 in a game. He's steady.

He's probably the second-best candidate for a quadruple-double after Goodwin. I say go for it.
