Tuesdays With Travis - Danny Mac Podcast

Looks like Danny Mac is going to have Ford on his podcast every Tuesday for "Tuesday's with Travis".  First one just came out, nothing ground breaking but Danny Mac asked specifically about a few players.  Few notes below but worth listening to so it gets the downloads.   Only 20 minute segment.

  • Likes team but has a lot of expectations for not accomplishing anything yet.  Long way to go still, with injuries in preseason it's still hard to see entire team together.
  • Mentioned Thatch and Jacobs as impact players of freshmen
  • Danny Mac asks about getting local kids to stay home - Tate has helped him build relationships with coaches but he has found players want to stay and represent the city, not just the school but feel they will represent the city.  Can't take every player and coaches want them to recruit certain players but they can't take them all which can be tough.
  •  Wanted Goodwin to be quicker.  Lost 25-30 pounds probably
  • Asked about Gordon - very coachable, picks things up quickly and players hard.  They will let him bring it up after getting a rebound too a little bit.  Loves his versatility.
  • Thatch - the ultimate competitor.  Can be elite defensively, one of best in the country with his mentality.  You will see him out on the court because of how hard he competes.
  • French - asked about his free throws.  It is tough and they have been working on it but haven't seen fruits of their labors yet.  Doesn't expect him to be great free throw shooter but just to get better.  It's a process.
  • Bess - gets to the gym at 6 am working on his shooter and jumper.  Want him to set the tone defensively for the team.
  • Final question if it's a tournament team - Ford thinks it is but they aren't playing like it yet.  Need to get healthy and figure out the system.

Probably 30% coach speak re getting it together as a team. Little hint to Isabell probably about Thatch's great D. Gonna be interesting to see how it all comes together. No use crying over spilt milk but would be more comforting if Santos hadn't effed up.

I would look forward towards what the team will get to be this year rather than backwards to what we lost with Santos of Welmer. Things can always be better and or worse, it all depends on how our potential develops. I think  all will go well and we have a wonderful winning year ahead of us.

Another episode today.  Listened a bit ago so few notes I remember.

  • Asked about how much of his offensive system Ford has implemented compared to midway through conference play - about 40% which is even lower than last year.  He will add things throughout the year as he watches team play and see opportunities that fit certain players, so a new way to get Gordon the ball.
  • Danny Mac said Goodwin has softest hands for rebounding he's seen in years.  Ford agreed and said he's so competitive and smart with the game he knows where to go to get the rebound.  It's a strength for him so they don't tell him to go back because rebounding is a strength.
  • Poor shooting part with them not being comfortable with each other.  Been telling them to shoot when they get an open look.
  • Working on free throws but he doesn't get on them about it because it is so mental.  They know they need to make it, the difficult part is having the pressure on them to make it during practice.  He hears the fans during the game and they are working on it.
