Initial thoughts:  Tough loss for SLU. It was a good effort, and for much of the game, SLU was the better team.  KU was better in the 2nd half.   The game seemed destined for pk’s. The Lady Billikens came out like a house on fire in the first half. They created several opportunities, but didn’t finish. It easily could have been a multiple goal lead early. Forcing turnovers in the midfield as well as getting good combination play. KU settled down a bit late first half but SLU controlled the half, and very successfully played the ball on the ground through the left side where Pokorny was the best player on the field with her speed, toughness, and attacking game.  SLU got away from this in the 2nd half, and KU made some adjustments.  I really liked how SLU didn’t panic after giving up the first goal. They played the same and were able to get the equalizer a little while later. Many teams panic there and get deflated after giving up one chance, getting down 1-0 when outplaying the opponent.

SLU seemed to tire a bit in the 2nd half playing against the wind.  They gave a little too much space on defense, forcing less turnovers in the midfield.  I was pretty surprised that KU did not play with 10 in the final 32 minutes as a foul called was clearly a yellow card, the 2nd of the game for the KU player.  SLU was the better team in the midfield, (Friedrich) was solid defensively in the wide midfield) but SLU struggled a little bit in back at times. It’s imperative to be consistent with one time clears off of set pieces and deep throws. The OT winner was a bad call just to the side of the box.  Nice finish by KU but SLU didn’t mark tight enough and was caught ball watching on OT goal.

SLU is slowly building and doing what it needs to do, dominating the bad and mediocre teams, and playing the better teams even. The next step is getting results vs the good, bigger, regional teams, and then Nationally, etc...If SLU can get more results, especially early non-conference in a handful of games, it can improve its power ratings and host NCAA games.

SLU could have gone from a 60 RPi to 30’s or better in a matter of a couple of results combined with other play. They went from 60 to 41 quickly. I would like to see SLU diversify its recruiting a bit, and continue to add more speed, especially out wide and in back.  Shields has been a very good hire thus far. SLU needs to make sure she has what she needs to be successful. SLU returns a lot of players. Their future is bright.
