Conference USA: Conference Schedule Experiment

@HoosierPal posted a similar article in the schedule thread, but to get it more attention, I started a new thread

Next season, C-USA’s men’s basketball schedule will look nothing like that of any other Division I conference. Instead of releasing a hard-set regular season conference schedule, C-USA will seed its teams after the opening 14 games of the conference slate. The conference will then face its best teams off against one another over the next four games, with the end goal of placing multiple teams in the NCAA tournament and securing higher seeds for those teams. It’s the old “iron sharpens iron” adage, basically, with some added strength-of-schedule boost built in.

Wasn't this the intent of our league doing something similar?  A couple of year ago, there was talk of us playing Dayton twice, VCU twice, and a few others.  Which is what we still do but wasn't the thought that higher performing teams would get home and home with higher performing teams,  thereby enhancing the internal RPI as best as one could once conference season rolled around. Of course, this would be based  on crystal ball projections which can and do fall apart.  Just thinking about how Duquesne started the year last year and then fell apart.

Mid-level conferences will always be stuck trying to gimmick the heck out of this just to gain a foothold or two into the P5 dominance of Selection Sunday.  The bottom line first and foremost is CUSA is bad basketball, in perspective.  Their only hope is a recovery at Memphis and I suspect even if Penny Hardaway runs the CUSA table, he'll be outmatched in the Dance.

Memphis is in the American now.

Yes it was, and maybe still is, the intent of the A10.  But the A10 model is based on last year (and historical) results, where this CUSA model is based on current results.  With the upcoming squeeze on scheduling higher RPI teams for OOC, this makes sense.  Having an in-season correction so to speak might let one bubble team sneak in.  Just making this up, but substituting a Davidson game for a Duquesne game this past season could turn the trick for a team.  Yes it might mean playing one team four times (double H-H plus via schedule revision plus tourney) but it might be worth it.   And I like once your in the top tier, you stay in the top tier for the tourney seed.

Sun Belt following lead of CUSA and WCC on altering conference schedules.  IF, and big IF, any of these three manages to get in an extra team, who looses a bid?  You know it won't be the P5 6th, 7th or 8th place team.  It will be a mid-major 3rd team.
