How close is it to Lincoln Park campus?

35 minutes on the red line. 20-30 minutes driving probably. Probably about 6 miles.

If you were are at the B-school in the loop, it's probably about 2 miles away, half the time on the red line/driving.

jeez time wise our kids could get to The Family Arena in that time. Imagine student section for us if that was the way it is?

It's an improvement over their previous situation in Rosemont at Allstate Arena - about half the mileage from campus and a little bit shorter time-wise driving, and a big improvement public transit-wise - but it's not perfect. There just isn't anywhere to build near campus. The Sullivan Athletic Center has a 3,000-seat arena (along with AD offices, other campus rec facilities) and is right in the heart of campus; they just couldn't get a bigger capacity facility in that space. The men's team has played exhibition games there before, though.

This deal also got over $100 million in public funds, and is owned and operated by the company that runs McCormick Place (the convention center, which is adjacent to the arena and will be able to use it for events) and Navy Pier. If DePaul were to have found a good piece of land closer to campus, it likely would've had to be done primarily or completely with private money.

The Family Arena isn't really a comparison because the size of the two metros isn't close. There is an arena roughly the size of the Family Arena out in Hoffman Estates, for the exurban comparison.

An interesting note is that DePaul gets all the money from the 15 year naming rights deal ($22 million) and and all the signage in the building.

Yeah, it seemed like a relatively unusual deal all around, in terms of the financing and some of the rights splits.

They turned down free rent from the United Center for 20+ years too. Rahm wanted to build it badly.
