Recruiting - 2021

If we do have a transfer, a raw 6'9 athlete with ball skills would be a wise use of the scholarship.  Three years of eligibility, first year is a development year, next two years he's a serious matchup problem. It's low risk, potentially high reward.  I'm assuming Wilson on track to graduate in the spring since he's a redshirt freshman.

I'm rooting for him wherever he goes.  He's gone through a lot before being cleared to play.  Our beloved Fred Thatch is going through a similar trial.

Langston (Jake) Wilson - PF, 6-9, 187 - Philadelphia, PA (Georgia Highlands College, GA) - Twitter: @Langston3491
Offers: Saint Louis, Alcorn State, Grambling State.

Interest: VCU, Xavier, Virginia Tech, LSU, Tulsa, New Mexico, SIU-Carbondale, Murray State, Southeast Missouri, Buffalo, UAB, Milwaukee, Youngstown State, Little Rock, Georgia State, Louisiana, Appalachian State, Troy, Arkansas State, Texas State, Sam Houston State, Charleston, Campbell, Charleston Southern, Stony Brook, Mount St. Mary's, Bryant, North Alabama, Jacksonville, Texas-Rio Grande Valley, Howard, Morgan State, South Carolina State, Maryland-Eastern Shore, Florida A&M, Savannah State.

Latest News: Wilson received an offer from SLU. (2/7/20)

Scouting Report: Wilson is a long, lean forward with explosive leaping ability. He has highlight reel finishing ability with either hand and can also step out and hit shots in the mid-range and past the perimeter, although he averages less than 1 attempt per game from 3. He shows a variety of post moves. He pushes the ball in open court and flourishes in transition. He's a strong rebounder and alters shots without fouling too much. As a JUCO freshman, he is averaging 11.2 PPG on a slash line of .585/.353/.508 to go with 7.1 RPG and 1.1 BPG. He missed almost all of his HS career because of a Marfan syndrome diagnosis, a condition that weakens the connective tissue of the aorta, increasing his risk of a cardiac event while playing sports. His dad, who also has the condition, played at Villanova and was the JV coach at his HS.

-Wilson is indeed a raw athletic talent. He doesn't shoot outside much but is decent at it when he does, averaging over 35% from 3.

Regarding whether he's a 2020 or 2021 player, it depends on whether he's an academic qualifier or not. If he has registered with the NCAA eligibility center and was academically qualified out of HS, is attending Georgia Highlands full time, and completes 12 hours each semester with a 2.0 GPA or better, then he can transfer after this academic year. If he doesn't meet all of those criteria, he will be a 2021 recruit. He's listed as a 2021 player on VC but that might just be the default for a JUCO freshman.

What I can't tell is what he did between HS graduation in May 2018 and his freshman JUCO season, currently underway. Seems like he took a gap year because I can't find any word of a prep year. Then he shows up on an AAU team in Smyrna, Georgia in May 2019 and is on campus at GHC shortly after that. My guess is he was waiting for medical clearance.

Anyway, I'll list him as a 2021 recruit until we can confirm if he's eligible and hoping to transfer in 2020.

Tyrone (TyTy) Washington - PG, 6-4, 170 - Phoenix, AZ (Compass Prep) - AAU: Team WhyNot (Nike EYBL) - Twitter: @tytywashington3
Offers: Saint Louis, Marquette, DePaul, Maryland, Oklahoma, TCU, Arizona State, Washington State, Nevada, Santa Clara, Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, Portland, Pacific, Louisiana-Monroe, Hofstra, UC-Santa Barbara, Montana, Portland State, Grand Canyon.

Latest News: Washington received an offer from SLU. (2/12/20)

Scouting Report: Washington is a dynamic point guard who fills up the stat sheet. He handles the ball well and can score on all three levels. He makes huge plays and comes up big in the clutch. He rebounds his position extremely well and quickly leads the break after grabbing defensive boards. He creates a ton of turnovers and racks up steals on the defensive end. He's athletic, smart, skilled, improving, he plays hard, and has good length. He was a star quarterback but gave up football for basketball. He transferred from Cesar Chavez HS to Compass Prep at the semester break this season. Rankings: Rivals - 101, Prep Hoops - 42, 247Sports - 73, 247Sports Composite - 96.

-Washington played in the National Prep Showcase Invitational in Providence, where SLU also watched Andre Lorentsson. His team plays at Battle of the Rock in South Carolina tonight through Friday. He's a teammate of Seryee Lewis, who SLU offered when he was playing HS ball in Chicago before he transferred out to Compass Prep. Washington has taken one official visit so far, to Maryland.

EDIT: Dropped in the bio after a placeholder, and then added his class rankings.

Nicholas Kern getting it done against Davion Bradford and Mehville last night.  Finished with 18 points and an uncharacteristic 10/10 from the line.  He's tough to stop off the dribble so consistently knocking down free throws would take his game to another level.

Worse than Bradford getting dunked on is him getting his shot blocked by a smaller player. Haha! This should go in the tool thread.

The most brutal part of his transfer is the dramatic shift in narrative in under 6 weeks:

November 14, 2019He could have left the public school for the non-traditional national high school teams that have emerged in the Valley over the last five years to further sharpen his skills in front of high major college coaches.

But he's connected by family and friends and feels tremendous pride wearing the purple jersey.

"We've developed a great brotherhood," Washington said. "It wouldn't really make sense for me to destroy that by me going to a prep (school) to try to play with better players. That wouldn't necessarily be the best route for me."

December 26, 2019With TyTy Washington behind the bench, encouraging his former teammates, Laveen Cesar Chavez showed it can still dominate a basketball game...

Washington, a 6-foot-4 junior guard who is arguably among the five best players in Arizona, had not played since being in the middle of the post-game brawl between Cesar Chavez and Mesa Skyline after Skyline beat Chavez in the final of the Phoenix Union High School District tournament the week of Thanksgiving.

Multiple game suspensions to multiple players on both teams were handed out by the schools. Both schools forfeited contests.

AZ Compass Prep on Tuesday announced Washington had joined its team.

Life comes at you quickly.

This write-up has more of the story, as does this one. In short: Washington and his long-time teammate and friend Ricardo Sarmiento were the junior leaders for a Cesar Chavez team that was a favorite to win the 6A state title in AZ. They were involved in a brawl in the handshake line following a loss to Mesa Skyline in a Thanksgiving tournament final and were suspended for a minimum of three games. Washington didn't play again before announcing he was transferring to Compass. Sarmiento played in a Christmas tournament and then announced his transfer to PHH Prep. They're still doing pretty well at 21-6 (including a forfeit following the brawl) but not looking like a state title favorite.

Correct. The prep school is outside the jurisdiction of the state's HS athletic association - AIA.

AZ has pretty loose regulations around charter schools so prep schools of varying quality have popped up all over the Central Valley in the past few years. None of these schools are part of the AIA and play a national schedule. It's the same for STL Christian Academy near SLU, where Jordan Nesbitt and Jaden Jones are.

Demarius Jacobs went to Hillcrest for a year and Jimmy Bell was at Bella Vista Prep for two. 2020 offer Seryee Lewis is also at Compass Prep with Washington.

Jaden Jones from STL Christian is down to 6: San Diego State, LSU, Rutgers, Arizona, USC, and Alabama.

Had a SLU offer.

Pretty random list, just missing a northern school or 2
