Are the Ivies now offering full athletic scholarships?

(Yeah, I know that many of the athletes can get grants, but it doesn't count.)

I suspect that with the help of Mr. and Mrs. Laczkowski as well as grants, Andrew will graduate University of Pennsylvania with little to no student loan debt.

I don’t think so, but I read sometime in the last few years that a large number of students qualify for close to full scholarships due to grants. If you can get accepted to an Ivy and aren’t an elite athlete to suggest that playing professionally is likely, taking the Ivy route makes a ton of sense, even if you have to pay a fraction of the tuition.

Completely agree.

Why KU?  Does he not want to play in the post season?  Their football sucks - and always has - and now basketball facing NCAA investigation and sanctions!

Oh good. No response other than secretly marking all my posts as a troll. Not surprised.

Dusan Mahorčič - PF, 6-10, 215 - Belgrade, Serbia (Moberly Area Community College, MO) - Twitter: @DMahorcic
Offers: Saint Louis, Tulsa.

Interest: Florida State, West Virginia, Arkansas, USC.

Latest News: Mahorčič received an offer from SLU. Arkansas was out to see him this week. (10/8/19)

Scouting Report: Mahorčič is a skilled, versatile big man at both ends. He can score in the post, finishes strong at the rim, and can step out and shoot from mid-range and the perimeter. He's a strong rim protector and he rebounds very well at both ends. He understands spacing and screens, shows great vision and understanding of the game, and is a sharp passer. He shows a high motor in transition. He played at Notre Dame HS in Niles, IL for three seasons after coming to the US. He dealt with foot injuries for most of his freshman year at D-II Lewis University. A late bloomer who improved dramatically his senior HS season, he got looks from Virginia, Illinois, USC, Georgia Tech, Georgia State, Pepperdine, Cal State-Northridge, and others before ending up at Lewis.

-So this offer confirms that the staff is prioritizing a big for the last spot. This kid is pretty intriguing. Came to the US for his sophomore year of HS, learned English on the fly, improved dramatically every year but didn't get D-I offers, went to Lewis (D-II) but battled injuries his freshman year, and is now hoping for a breakout juco season at Moberly. His big game in HS came in December 2017, when he posted 34 points, 22 rebounds, and 10 blocks in a win. His HS coach said he tended to float around the perimeter earlier on (he mostly played on the wing when he was younger), so he worked with him on developing more of an inside game to go with it. He's really, really long and blocks and disrupts as much as he can. He finishes hard but doesn't always go for the simplest play, putting a little Euro flourish on his moves at times when it might make more sense to just go straight at the rim. He's very fluid and runs well - not a stiff by any means.

From what I can tell on his Instagram, he's added a ton of muscle to his frame since HS. There's not a lot of video on him, but a YouTube clip from September 2017 shows a lot of the attributes I mention above. He has taken an official visit to West Virginia and I think that's it so far. Tulsa has offered. Florida State, Arkansas, and USC are also looking. I'm not sure who else is involved this time around yet, but will be tracking this one closely.

Excellent report as always. Very intrigued by this guy. Wouldn’t get a lot of “press” but could be a pretty good signing

It's down to Cal and Minnesota. Most people seem to think it'll be Minnesota.

EDIT: This has been corrected to say October 14, not November 14.

The father of his future coach at Minnesota coached his father at Kentucky.  Neat circle — but he's still a compass (a tool for drawing a circle).

Cal got a commitment from a SF yesterday. Mashburn is more of a combo guard so it probably doesn't impact his decision but I still think he's a Gopher four days from now.

D.J. Gordon committed to Penn State. Had a SLU offer but we weren't a finalist.

Deivon Smith called it for Mississippi State last night. We weren't among his finalists but had previously offered.

General observation: There are way more early commitments happening than last season and there will be way more fall signings overall. I don't have the numbers in front of me (hopefully have a better idea around signing time), just sharing what I'm seeing. I've seen it hypothesized that the new official visit rule might have something to do with it, as it allows juniors to take official visits, too. I'm not sure that accounts for more than a small piece of the puzzle, though.

With so many players making decisions early, we're going to see way more players asking out of LOIs, too. There will be some who change their minds, then plenty of coaching changes every spring, and of course add to this mix transfers - about 1,000 this past season, which is by far an all-time record. This means that there will be a massive flurry of activity in the spring and summer, and some really short recruiting cycles for a lot of players.

Bottom line: Whether we fill the last open spot in the fall or not, be ready for a crazy spring - and that will be true every year.

Arkansas associate head coach Chris Crutchfield was at Moberly Area Community College in Missouri on Wednesday to see Mahorcic (6-10, 240, forward / center, Serbia native) who is a juco sophomore, while Arkansas assistant coach Clay Moser was at Kilgore College in Texas on Wednesday to see Andela (6-8, 230, forward, Cameroon) who is also a juco sophomore.

Both players can sign as soon as the mid-November early period with two years to play at the NCAA Division 1 level beginning in 2020-21.

"(Crutchfield) was at my college today," Mahorcic confirmed Wednesday night. "And they said they are really interested in me and I am too (interested in Arkansas)."

Mahorcic attended Notre Dame College Prep in Illinois before signing with Lewis University, but after suffering an injury that sidelined him he ended up at MACC.

In addition to Arkansas, Mahorcic said he's being recruited by Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Southern Cal, TCU, Indiana, Oklahoma, Tulsa, St. Louis, and San Diego State among others. He's taken only one visit thus far -- to West Virginia -- and he said whether or not he signs early depends on the opportunity being right for him.

"I'll look for the best school for me that can get me to the NBA," Mahorcic said. "And best fit ... If for example Arkansas offers me and I come down for an official visit, and I like it and the team likes me I would commit right away. It’s all about the right fit for me."

Mahorcic said he and Crutchfield have talked about the positives of the Razorbacks' basketball program.

"He told me a lot of good stuff and that I would fit really good," said Mahorcic, who also shared his self-scouting report. "Very skilled big man. Can play the 4 and 5, prefer 4. I can shoot, dribble the ball, block shots really good, and really good rebounder."

So it sounds like we need to get Mahorčič on campus for a visit right away. I'm assuming his quote about Arkansas applies to the others recruiting him - he'll commit if he feels good about a place.

Looks like he's filming a team video session to share his dunk. I don't mind.

Max Amadasun, one of our most recent big man offers, committed to Pitt. Athletic 6'9/6'10 guys have been flying off the board the past two weeks.

They sure have. Players in general have been flying off the board. Other SLU offers committed elsewhere in the past 5 days:

Quincy Ademokoya to Temple (reclassified to 2021, now back to 2020)

Dudley Blackwell to Iowa State

Jamal Mashburn, Jr. to Minnesota

Deivon Smith to Mississippi State

Davion Bradford to Kansas State

We discussed the last 3, but still. So many fall commitments this year.

Has Modestas Kancleris name been brought up yet? 6'8" Lithuanian who played AAU ball before going back to play in Lithuania for BC Zalgiris's youth team? Kid looks like he has some potential. He was the MVP at one of the European Youth Basketball League tournaments last season. Zalgiri is on of the top European clubs and has developed some impressive players like Marciulionis, Sabonis and Ilgauskas.

We've got 👀 on him. Bio from the Recruiting Lists thread:

Modestas Kancleris - PF, 6-8, 200 - Kaunas, Lithuania - AAU: JSI Elite (Adidas Gauntlet) - Twitter: @MKancleris
Offers: None.

Interest: Saint Louis, Creighton, Indiana, Auburn, Cincinnati, Temple, BYU, Gonzaga, Georgia State, Coastal Carolina, Hawaii, Grand Canyon.

Latest News: Kancleris has been to the US a few times in the past few years but his recruitment has been quiet lately. He is playing for the Žalgiris basketball club in Kaunas, Lithuania. (10/10/19)

Scouting Report: Kancleris is an extremely versatile forward who scores in a variety of ways - mid-range jumpers, posting up, transition, offensive put-backs, and from the perimeter. He's a skilled passer and plays a smart game. He's a fluid athlete and can play any position. He played the 2018 AAU season with JSI Elite (Adidas Gauntlet) out of Alabama and showed out in the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions. He returned to the US for the NBPA Top 100 Camp this year.

-Kancleris' last tweet is actually a retweet of him and Tautvydas Sabonis, who retired this year and is now an assistant coach of the club Kancleris plays for. Tautvydas is the middle of Arvydas Sabonis' three sons; Domantas, the youngest, plays for the Pacers.

Gethro Muscadin committed to Kansas. Had a SLU offer, but we weren't a finalist.

High-level recruits Isaiah Todd and Devin Askew are also announcing today. Neither were SLU recruits, but commitments are rolling in quickly.

Hey, Pistol.  Is the fact that we are looking at foreign players now a sign that we're moving to Plan B or Plan C?  Or, to be more direct, is it a sign that the staff is viewing this class as not as successful as we would have hoped and are trying to salvage something?
