David van den Berg
First time poster, long time reader in the DC area who is a fan of and has family ties to SLU. I toohope May will pursue Brad Underwood. He's proven himself as much as anyone can at the low major level with a three year 88-13 record (53-1 in conference) and three consecutive NCAA appearances, with at least two wins (we'll know very soon whether he'll have a third and a sweet 16 appearance). I know he doesn't have ties to the area but his record, for me, is impossible to ignore. His teams, as others have said, are fun to watch. And when you stack up SLU to the other open jobs (TCU, Rutgers, Oklahoma State and Stanford), SLU is a top four job in its conference, for reasons including the arena and the recruiting base. TCU isn't anywhere close to to a top half job in the Big 12. Oklahoma State is at best the fourth best job in that league. Rutgers is also open but that might be the worst job in the Big 10. Stanford isn't as good a job as Arizona or UCLA, and I'm not sure how their facilities compare to USC, Washington, Oregon, and Cal. There's a real case to be made that SLU is the best job available for him. And I hope (and think) he'd stay at SLU until a top 3-5 job came open in a power 5 league. I'm fine with the job being a stepping stone for guys like him.

Dwayne's_World
Well Underwood is available to talk too now. If he's our guy then it's probably already a done deal.
David van den Berg
Well, Underwood's season has ended. What a game, and what a team. Forgot UNLV has an opening too. That's a top two job in a multi-bid league (it is in most years, anyway). This week, especially the next 72 hours, seems like the time to make a move. Gary Parrish of CBS reporting here TCU has offered the job to Pittsburgh's Jamie Dixon (a TCU alum): http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/eye-on-college-basketball/25524559/source-pitts-jamie-dixon-considering-offer-to-coach-at-tcu Oh and it looks like Steve Pikiell of Stony Brook gets the Rutgers job: http://www.nj.com/rutgersbasketball/index.ssf/2016/03/rutgers_will_hire_steve_pikiell_as_its_new_basketb.html#incart_river_index If Dixon takes TCU, that leaves Oklahoma State, Stanford, and UNLV as competitors for coaches. And Pitt if that's the case
David van den Berg
Yes, silly me, you're exactly right. But while Pitt is an ACC job and that would surely have a lot of pull, look at the gauntlet you have to run in that league. It's a good job, but I'm not sure it's a top half job in that league (but that league is arguably consistently the best and gets 6-8 of its 15 teams in). If the NCAA throws the book at Louisville and North Carolina that could create opportunities for other programs too.
slufan13
We have a big rebuilding job but I think it's a much easier rebuild than TCU. The fact that there have been no real rumors regarding our coaching job tells me we may truly have a done deal in place that will be announced in a few weeks. Hope it's a big time hire (Martin, Drew, Underwood)
AnkielBreakers
4-star SG decommits from Cal https://twitter.com/jeffeisenberg/status/711626816725897216 Well, the head coach just told the kid he accepted the HC job with SLU.
majerus mojo
Would be hard to imagine OKST being outbid by SLU if they were interested in Underwood's services

HoosierPal
Would be hard to imagine OKST being outbid by SLU if they were interested in Underwood's services Yep, T. Boone Pickens has given over $1 Billion to OSU (the majority to the athletic department) and could easily buy any basketball coach he wants. Yeah, he is mainly a football guy, but a few extra million for the hoops program wouldn't dent his bottom line.
slu72
Would be hard to imagine OKST being outbid by SLU if they were interested in Underwood's services Correct, that's a phone call to Boone and the check's on his Gulfstream being sent to pick him up. TheA_Bomb
I would think the Big 12 is a good spot for Underwood but I like that option for SLU.

Dwayne's_World
Well, the head coach just told the kid he accepted the HC job with SLU. Seems plausible. Cuonzo would be a home run hire because he's a local guy who would probably make this his permanent gig.
crymdg2
No mention of him wanting to come to SLU necessarily, but just heard from someone who would know that Cuonzo is indeed looking to get out at Cal. I doubt SLU would go there, but if he really is willing to leave (he doesn't have a contract) he's at the top of my list.
slufan13
If Martin leaves, he'll have been at 4 programs since 2011. That's my only hold up on him.
DeSmetBilliken
With this deal of Martin not having a contract, is he just on a 1 year deal each year, or has his initial contract just not been extended?
JMM28
With this deal of Martin not having a contract, is he just on a 1 year deal each year, or has his initial contract just not been extended? He never signed a contract, just an offer letter. Apparently Cal is too busy to actually put together a contract for one of their top 5 highest paid employees. WestCoastBilliken
Can someone explain why Martin is their top choice? His record doesn't seem that impressive.
