Coaching Candidates

Depends. Standards for online "breaking news" are somewhat different.

I will say this. A buddy who runs a sports news website broke the news about a coaching hire....only to have that coach change his mind the next morning. So he was correct before he wasn't. Who knows what's going on.

Sell some ads, kid. Sell some ads. ;)

I will resist ads. I, however, may need to do a fundraiser in the next year. I actually have not calculated how much in the red I am, but I am certainly in the red.

Maybe a suggested donation of $.10 per post will limit some of the littering of the board over recent years that has driven so many away...

Targeting certain folks for ads might assuage your socialist-academic-anticapitalistic guilt ;) and alleviate the need for a fundraiser. The new owner of Humps, for example. :) Or Travis Ford, for that matter.

I see Frank C. is in full homer mode now about the hiring of Travis Ford. Here is Ford's coaching career by the #s:

Oklahoma State

2015-16 - 12-10 overall/3-15 in conference (9th place finish in conference)

2014-15 - 18-14 overall/8-10 in conference (T-6th place in conference) - NCAA Tournament #9 seed (lost in opening round)

2013-14 - 21-13 overall/8-10 in conference (8th place in conference) - NCAA Tournament #9 seed (lost in opening round)

2012-13 - 24-9 overall/13-5 in conference (3rd place in conference) - NCAA Tournament #5 seed (lost in opening round)

2011-12 - 15-18 overall/7-11 in conference (7th place in conference)

2010-11 - 20-14 overall/6-10 in conference (9th place in conference) - NIT

2009-10 - 22-11 overall/9-7 in conference (T-6th place in conference) - NCAA Tournament #7 seed (lost in opening round)

2008-09 - 23-12 overall/9-7 in conference (T-4th place in conference) - NCAA Tournament #8 seed (won opening round game and lost in next round)

Overall at Oklahoma State - 155-111 overall/63-80 in conferene - 1 NCAA Tournament win

-So around .500 and middle of the conference most seasons which for the Big 12 puts you in the tournament where his teams primarily lost in the opening round.

UMass

2007-08 - 25-11 overall/10-6 in conference (3rd place in conference) - NIT (runners-up)

2006-07 - 24-9 overall/13-3 in conference (T-1st in conference) -NIT (2nd round)

2005-06 - 13-15 overall/8-8 in conference (T-7th in conference)

Overall at UMass - 62-35 overall/31-17 in conference

-So solid success at UMass, I guess that run in the NIT set him up for the Okie State job?

Eastern Kentucky

2004-05 - 22-9 overall/11-5 in conference (2nd place in conference) - NCAA Tournament #15 seed (lost in opening round)

2003-04 - 14-15 overall/8-8 in conference (4th place in conference)

2002-03 - 11-17 overall/5-11 in conference (T-8th place in conference)

2001-02 - 7-20 overall/3-13 in conference (9th place in conference)

200-01 - 7-19 overall/1-15 in conference (9th place in conference)

Overall at EKU - 61-80 overall/28-52 in conference

-So one good season at EKU.

Overall that puts him at 278-226 overall/122-149 in conference with one shared regular season conference championship at UMass and one NCAA Tournament win. So we have a coach who has proven to be mediocre? And we are foolish for wanting more than that?

It's great to say we should have gone after this coach or that coach, but just because a good coach or assistant coach is out there it doesn't mean they have any interest in coaching here regardless of the money and other things.

I wonder how much the city plays into any of this? It's one thing to say it would be a real boost to SLU since the Rams left, but many nationally think it was a huge blunder by St. Louis. Also, St. Louis hasn't been painted in the best light the last couple of years. Many outsiders think things are way different here than they really are.

I'm calling it right now, Ford ain't a done deal. It's 1417 and this story broke last night. By now there would normally be an official release "SLU Makes Agreement with Travis Ford to be Men's Basketball Head Coach"

Nothing no other news sites reporting any other information. Not done, we still have hope.

You know that might be true of one or two guys but not for most. So you wouldn't take a significant raise to go live in a place that's not all that high on your list for 5-10 years? I'd live in Detroit for $1.5/yr. Pretty sure I could afford a few trips to Cancun on that budget.

Maybe he is out gathering "berries" while he is still "unattached"

Yeah, Frank is a homer... after all, he was gushing about SPUMAC hiring D2 coach Kim Anderson.

I didn't think much of Ford when he was at UMass, but his brief tenure there was not bad in the context of that program's history. Outside of Calipari (who we know had his Final Four vacated and was a notorious cheater) no UMass coach has EVER won a NCAA Tourney game, not exactly a glorious history. His predecessor Lappas, never even got them in the NIT. A co conference championship in year two, followed by and NIT Final in his third and final season is pretty good in his brief A-10 run.

There are several other options I would prefer, but the sky may not be falling if Ford is the choice.

Good point. does Jeff Newberry have eligibility? He is a JUCO that played 1 season at OSU

Get Garjok Gak the Sudanese big fella' and I'll feel better about Ford

Something has to be going on. Surely it wouldn't take this long to finalize a contract.

It could. Maybe Ford's deal from OkSt is more common than I think, but it seems oddly complex. SLU and Ford could still be working on the deal to determine OkSt's role in his salary to make sure they both get the best deal.

It seems odd that Stu has been silent all day to.

As for this, I think he's staying out of social media cause it's not worth getting in arguments all day with people second guessing him. I'm assuming his source is credible. I'm sure he's just hanging out at the Winchester and waiting for this all to blow over :)

That kind of thing is real common. The firing team pays a buy out up to X per year for Y years. The hiring team really has nothing to do with that at all though it can be taken into account for the salary for those years. The firing team has to pay the difference normally.

See Will Muschamp to Auburn from HC at UF to AC at AU

I don't foresee a contract negotiation as the hold up here. That's all speculation on my part though.
